Looks as if based on the video she broke up early in the reentry process.

Resembled satellite decay reentry.

Wasn't normal reentry as viewed from Kennedy in previous missions.

J-track 3-D showing some satellites in low orbit in area.

It is a shame so many had become some used to shuttle launches it wasn't a big deal to watch any more, I think everyone will now appreciated the incredible amount of potential for disaster that exists for these complex activities.

I know how you feel about that comment. The sad part is that the news reports from that part of the world, when we get the reactions from Israel and the Palestinians, are going to reveal that it will soon be all too true. It's just human nature.

When I was at accident investigation school, I read an edited transcript that I was told was from the actual CVR tape of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

I just don't believe this. The existence of such a transcript is the secret too big to keep.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the astronauts and their families.

And to think these shuttle flights are somewhat taken forgranted now. Little mention in the news, maybe a little clip of take-off or launch. Except when something like this happens.

"Do we really have to come back?" astronaut David Brown jokingly asked Mission Control before the ride home.

Yes, David. I'm afraid so.

Oh man, I knew this was just a matter of time before we lost another one. I hate being right.

Re: Challenger. I don't know if there were transcripts that accurate, but I do remember hearing that they died on impact - not from the explosion.

It's time to really move on a replacement for the Shuttle. It's served us well for 20 years but it's time to bring on a new generation of space craft. Perhaps this disaster can be turned toward a positive end. God bless the brave crew and their families.

We need to stop sending these types of shuttles into space when they've now killed two entire crews.

Huh! Two accidents in twenty years. How many Airlines have crashed and killed all of their passengers in the same amount of time? The surprise is not that we have lost two shuttles, but that we have not lost more. Getting anything into space is a dangerous mission and no amount of engineering will make it 100% safe.

We are only in the first two hours of this disaster, I think we should wait just a little bit before we assign blame, or attempt to fix what went wrong.

CNN is reviewing the resume of each crew member; the Israeli was part of the team that took out Iraqi nuclear facilities.

Dear God of heaven and earth

Bless these brave men and women and bundle them into your loving arms. We will forever be in their debt for the bravery, dilligence, and independent spirit that led them to challenge the environs of space and expand our frontiers.
We will miss them dearly, and most certainly we will miss their brave spirits, which they only make so much of in these times.
God bless them all.

Amen

Contrary to someone else's observation on this thread the shuttle is an engineering marvel.

No. The shuttle as originally designed was an engineering marvel. Jimmy Carter cut the budget and they had to build of aluminum instead of titanium and them use ceramic tiles to protect the aluminum from re entry heat. The design, as built is an overweight Kludge. An obsolete one.

MSNBC interviewed his former commander a while ago. This Israeli astronaut was one of the 8 pilots who flew to destroy Saddam's nuclear reactor in the early 80s. So he was already a hero. And his mother was a survivor of Bergen Belsen.

Exploration is a dangerous business. It's not surprising that these shuttles are occasionally lost. Think back to the Magellan expedition and how few men came through.

My condolences to the families of those on board. We all hoped a day like this would never come again, but we all knew it would. At least they can take someday take comfort in the fact that their loved ones died in the pursuit of knowledge. Good men and women die every day for far less...
