Wonder why we have not heard the last voice transmissions during re-entry... maybe there is a radio blackout because of the turbulence of re-entry. I guess we will hear more later...

I think they said that the last voice contact was in regard to a normal tire-pressure check and then they had a garbled message and static. Still too early to tell but that seems to be whats known now.

It is highly unlikely any plane was up there at 207,000 feet. Commercial aircraft fly at roughly 35-42,000 feet. Only military aircraft would fly at 200,000 feet and even then it would be on a test basis only, something like and X-Plane, unless it was the Aurora. The Blackbird used to travel with a top ceiling of around 100,000 feet by press reports. We don't truly know anything concrete about an Aurora.

It might look like a plane was up there, but it would likely be at least 150,000 feet lower, and simply appear like it was next to the shuttle.

We only part to meet again, though mighty boundless waves may sever. Remembrance oft shall bring thee near, and I with thee will go forever.

And oft at midnight's silent hour, when brilliant planets shall guide the ocean, thy name will rise to heaven's highest star, and mingle with my soul's devotion.

That's beautiful, thank you so much for posting this. Our prayers go to the families and to our countries who have lost brave pioneers.

16. I am embarrassed to be HERE right now!!

This is a sick post. All you guys can think of right now is Bush!! I came here to talk about and pray for the crew. I thought we'd put our differences aside on politics on this sad day. I feel really dirty and ashamed right now.

...REF my thread..My 2 cents worth on the fact that Democrats are leaving their party...

Just one more reason REAL Americans are coming back to the GOP

Saddam and the Palestinians will be celebrating.

If they do, they will only make the world angry at them again.

Do you remember that article about some guy flying around in a plane who said he needed to talk to someone about the Israel pilot on the shuttle? He had a waring he wanted to tell someone? People thought he was planning to hit a buildng but that's not what he wanted? It was a small plane. It was an article posted on FR.

Thanks nomad. I really don't know anything about it, just what I get from the TV (which we all know how reliable that is).

How the heck could the WH rule that out so fast?

They've already said that there is no missle or weapon capable of flying high enough to reach it. And I'm guessing that everything on that shuttle goes through multiple checks and is probably monitored and tested continually.

"The chase planes are T-38 Talons....not T5s. "

Right. Astronaut pilots and commanders use T-38s to train in. It keeps their flying skills sharp.

It's what the people on the "Day in the Life of President Bush" call their thread.

Sorry...

Prayers to all and their families.

NASA has scheduled a news conference for 11:30 AM ET.
Prepare for plenty of stupid questions from the media and others.

I just spoke with my sister and she said she heard a sonic boom as well & we are 130 miles east of Dallas. That was a terrible impact if it was heard this far.

How did this reentry differ from previous ones? Do you normally hear a sonic boom? Also, I wonder how the contrail shown on the videos differs from a normal descent. Is it normally that visible and large (of course, I'm referring to the part before the breakup).

Doesn't OPS and OEX send downlink to JSC MOCR?

Or is the data stored onboard for later replay?

>I was just getting frustrated with the talk about terrorism ...

We've got troops massing
in Arab lands that hate us.
Germany and France

are pissed off because
we may end up in charge of
all middle east oil.

This is the context
where it's only rational
to suspect foul play.

A security officer is shown with the shuttle landing facility in the background with a waiting fire truck after the scheduled landing of the space shuttle Columbia at the Kennedy Space Center (news - web sites) in Cape Canaveral, Florida February 1, 2003. The agency lost contact at around 9 a.m./1400 GMT, about 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Kennedy Space Center. Columbia is NASA (news - web sites)'s oldest shuttle and first flew in 1981. The shuttle was carrying a crew of seven back to earth, on a 16-day scientific research mission. REUTERS/Duffin McGee
