Final Radio Transmission From Space Shuttle
Drudge | 2-1-03 | Joe Hadenuf

Posted on 02/01/2003 11:52:21 AM PST by Joe Hadenuf

Final radio transmission between Columbia and Mission Control:

Mission Control: 'Columbia, Houston we see your tire pressure messages and we did not copy your last.'

Columbia: 'Roger, uh, ...' (transmission breaks off after the crew member starts to stay a word beginning with the sound 'buh.')

Burn through??

That's not morbid. But watching the body-sniffing dogs circle that smoking hole on TV is.

Those are property owners and their dogs.

NASA: Just before 8AM we say Loss of LIB and LOB Elevon temperature sensors, followed by loss of LMG tire pressure indications, followed by indications of left wing structural heating.

Crew was definitely aware of a problem just immediately prior to event.

I'm told that something hit the left wing, during takeoff. Anyone know about this?

I think some tiles had popped off - if I remember right, all kinds of crap starts flying around during liftoff, and remember, too, this craft was aged.

"16 minutes before their scheduled landing...."

God, they were so close. I was really feeling so horribly sad earlier then I began to contemplate on the fact that these folks were realizing their dreams to be an astronaut, to venture into the wonderous area we know as space. How many of us actually get to realize our wildest dreams? How many of us will ever travel into heaven's backyard and get to view the stars individually named by God? I hope that that fact will be some consolation and inspiration to all who grieve for them.

Psalm 8
For the director of music. According to gittith . A psalm of David.
1 O LORD , our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
above the heavens.
2 From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise]
because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?
5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you put everything under his feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD , our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

I hope whoever put the flowers there checked first to see if there was any hydrazine present!!!!

We're Americans. We sometimes take risks when it's worth disregarding good sense to make a point. Sometimes we're well aware of all of them, sometimes not, but we'll put caution to the wind sometimes when necessary or fitting.

This is one of those times.

What we won't do is give up.

You bet it is. I feel at least one of the crew knew they had big time problems just prior to the event......

What's really ashame is that the Ikonos wasn't taking pictures of the reentry. Maybe it was but we've not heard that. For if it was we'd have some very close up shots of the shuttle and could follow the event from when it began and through break up....

Agree, but with the loss of multiple temp sensors, they, or at least some of the crew had to know there was something terribly wrong.
