I was just wondering this the other day:

Would it be useful to have a portable generator you could wheel over to the local gas station, hook up to the fuse box, and get the pumps running?

I assume it would be easiest if the station owner was willing to help.

You must turn off the breakers so that you do not 'stream' electricity back down the electricity lines. During power outtages during hurricanes, some people in this area make that mistake.

I have a generator and 110 gallons of gasoline on hand all the time.

What the other poster said about crazies running around will be true. Plus, the generator would be stolen from you in an instant (and you might be left in a pool of blood). Besides, the police would confiscate the genrator if they saw you trying to do something like like...

Don't go toward people in an emergency, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE!

Generators are great to have. One crucial aspect to their use is isolation from the line. In other words, you must ensure without fail that the power generated does not enter the local power grid. Many utility workers have been electrocuted while servicing supposedly dead or "cold" wires.

The above list illustrates why it is important to assemble these items prior to needing them. If they organized effectively at home you and your family may be able to subsist adequately without government or other agency help and all that entails - chiefly, having to leave home and hearth vulnerable to possible looting, loss of dignity and privacy as well as exposure to infectious diseases and other interesting aspects of communal living.

Much better to have a room set aside in the basement, the nucleus can be built around the components of a good hiking/camping kit and expanded to include longer term survival items.
