No, there's no video, so it is definitely just an audio tape. It's hard to make videos of dead men look convincing, so they make an audio tape and just tell everyone it's him. Arabs will believe anything if they want to bad enough, and al Qaeda can still get its coded messages out, Binny or not.

Before it started Shep Smith said they had an interpreter ready to go when al Jazeera played it.

I'm thinking the reason MSNBC and CNN are not playing it live is because there would be no contemporary translation. Fox scores big--Powell and the administration clearly WANTED this played.

I am anxious to hear analysis if "bin Laden's" description of certain events comport with actuality--thereby showing he was alive on certain dates.

(I am one who does not think he is dead, though I would be happy to be wrong.)

I agree. His last audio tape was acredited as real by our intelligence agencies but debunked as a fraud subsequently by a Swiss audio lab. Before the attack on Tora Bora, Bin Laden sent video tapes. Now he's "sending" audio tapes. I think this is a fraud.

If OBL were dead his head would be on a platter and the news would not be kept secret, it benefits no one to keep his death a secret but the enemy.

"AngryJawa" makes good points about why we might be better served to not announce Bin Laden's death even if we know about it.

But there's another factor as well -- he may be dead but we don't know it for certain. We've bombed the hell out of all the locations we believed he might be at, and it's quite possible that his body was shredded, vaporized, cremated, or buried very deep in some cave complex by one of our countless bombs. We may *never* be able to prove conclusively that he's dead, at least not in the near term -- maybe 20 years from now someone excavating a collapsed cave in Afghanistan might find his corpse, but it's not likely to happen soon.

In any case, if Bin Laden were alive, he'd find some way to prove it (with a video) in order to rally his troops with a "the Great Satan tried its best to kill me, but I survived" taunt. Instead, all we've had for the last 1.5 years (since our bombing of his Tora Bora headquarters) have been cheesy audio tapes that might have been faked by a soundalike, or pieced together from old Bin Laden recordings.

The obvious conclusion: "He's dead, Jim!"

I don't think France is included in bin Laden's enemy list, He mentioned the enemies as Christian and American allies, France is neither.
