FBI alert triggered
by 'Mideast' truckers

Pair reportedly tried to put unleaded gas
into 18-wheeler at Colorado gas station

Two men described as 'Middle Eastern' seen driving a semi-truck that made a stop at a Colorado gas station are the focus of a nationwide alert issued by the FBI, according to a report by KUSA-TV in Denver.

The men driving the 18-wheeler reportedly stopped at a Hess station Thursday afternoon in the town of Byers, about forty miles east of Denver.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force got involved when an attendant saw the men apparently trying to put unleaded gasoline into the truck. The attendant had to tell the pair to use diesel fuel instead.

The men fueled up with the correct gas, paid in cash and then headed toward Interstate 80 in northeastern Colorado.

Few details of the FBI alert, which was released Friday afternoon, have been made available to the media.

The name on the truck is 'Real Transport' and it has a Quebec, Canada, license plate number RS7-116.

Authorities reportedly ran a check on the plate and determined it's not currently registered.

We need a photo of a Real Transport truck.

That would be much better than the gas station

Remember this... ?

Still concerned about the possibility trucks could be used for bombings, the FBI also has checked student records at a Colorado truck-driving school, classroom instructor Jack Atencio said. Agents visited the school in Henderson, just northeast of Denver, for a few hours last week, checking specific names, Atencio said. --
FoxNews.com (October 15, 2001)

A similar lack of press scrutiny has extended to specialty licenses too, such as the "hazardous material" (hazmat) permits the FBI now believes several dozen suspicious Middle Eastern immigrants sought through a Colorado truck-driving school. According to Time, the men paid cash, and did not use the school's job-placement services — an important aspect of the program's appeal. They also could speak no English, relying on a translator they brought along, yet somehow passed the state's hazmat written exam, which is given only in English. --

Does this event added to the attempt to purchase a cropduster plane in New England tell us anything about their intended plans?

re post no. 46:

WorldNetDaily.com: "'MIDEAST' MEN WHO SOUGHT PLANE IN CUSTODY" (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The two unidentified Brazilian nationals were taken into custody about 7 p.m. yesterday, the Boston Herald reported. Massachusetts state police Sgt. David Paine confirmed that the men are being held in connection with an unsolicited offer last week to buy a vintage banner-hauling Piper Pawnee plane. "At this time, it is not believed there is any link to terrorism involved," he said. The Herald said state police are investigating the matter along with the INS, the Joint Terrorism Task Force and police from the Boston-area cities of Beverly, Hudson and Marlboro. Authorities insisted that the airplane is not a "crop-duster" that could be used for chemical warfare, the Herald said.") (February 14, 2003)

Hmm... false alarm, possibly. Still odd, trying to buy a cropduster in New England.

Although derided by the likes of Chrissy Matthews (who is secretly hysterical with fear), the alert warning system does remind people to be more aware of little things and encourages them to report them without feeling dumb.

The attendant did a good job here, even if it turns out to be nothing.

Of course, guys driving a big rig and not knowing how to fuel it up is like guys learning to driving a jumbo jet but not wanting to learn how to land it.

Possible truckload of terror heading east. Meanwhile, Daytona prepares for 125,000 spectators at the track. The largest concentration of people in one place this weekend, unless you count the over -inflated estimates of "peace protestors".

I thought that there was a trend to use GPS on trailers now. Is that not so? Or is that just for newer trucks or large fleets? That would be a way to immediately know where these guy are.

Reminds me of the state drivers license scandal in Illinois a few years back. Finally took down the governor there. Hundreds and hundreds of unqualified applicants were given commercial drivers licenses for a few hundred dollars under the table. Most were foriengners.

Came to our attention in Wisconsin when a truck lost a large mud flap bracket that a mini van drove over and set it ablaze. A family of six died in the inferno right in front of busy freeway traffic. Horrific.

Turns out the driver was from Mexico, illegal alien and had one of the bogus Illinois licenses. Other truckers had seen the loose bracket but the driver ignored their signals to get him to pull over.

About time in this country that the police and Highway Patrol concentrate on commercial trucks. Both for public safety and security. I am amazed at how many more cars are pulled over than are trucks......

Why isn't this on the cable news 24/7? Work it like an Amber Alert.

Let's just assume this is some sort of terrorist activity (big assumption). What effect will the snowstorm in Washington, DC and the rest of the NE have on their plans? Obviously, inexperienced truck drivers (who don't know the right fuel, etc.) will have trouble in the ice and snow. But it will slow down LEOs, too.

I thought I heard last week that terrorist "chatter" picked up around the world referred specifically to a "package" which had arrived in America and would soon be used.

Anybody read "Sum of All Fears"?

I think the attendant screwed up.
Let them put gas in the tank.
The truck gets a few miles down the road and dies.

It would be a little easier to find.

Saw the movie. Tried to read the book, but couldn't get past the first chapter... too technical for me.

They put the bomb in a vending machine.

Great Job!

Can you imagine the impact if we had 100,000 actively involved monthly Free Republic donors.

There would be no real need to go to any other news source.

It is amazing the stories that appear on Free Republic first like the loss of our shuttle. Leadpenny had a live thread going for the landing. The people on that thread scooped every news agency in the world by minutes.

You were ahead here by at least a day! Great freeping!

FR can function as a national neighborhood watch program.

I wonder if the cable news channels have stayed away from this story at the request of the feds so as not to tip of the driver and passenger of the truck?

In the book version, the target was the Super Bowl in Denver, curiously enough. They hid it in a white panel truck with an ABC logo and drove right in. When it goes off, the Russians are scratching their heads because apart from NORAD, which is designed to survive a nuke, they can't think of anything important in Denver, besides some govt. document centers and administrative stuff.

If this is really something nasty, it won't stay in Denver. They'll drive it to somewhere really symbolic and political.

Not surprised the movie version was completely changed. If Clancy had set out to write an anti-"West Wing", he could hardly have been more vicious. The Democrat President is more concerned with boinking his employees than paying attention to security briefings (at least he is a widower.) And the NSA has so little interest in Foreign Policy, and so many personal scores to settle, that she goes completely nuts in a crisis. And this was published in the MID-90's
