Cheese-eating surrender monkeys, eh?
Fort Worth Startlegram ^ | Feb. 20, 2003 | Good Golly Miss Molly

Uh oh. George Will is telling French jokes, and premier leftist bedwetter Molly Ivins isn’t impressed, so she’s decided to come to the rescue of the cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

We have been enjoying a lovely little spate of French-bashing here lately. Jonah Goldberg of National Review, who admits that French-bashing is "shtick" (as it is to many American comedians), has popularized the phrase "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" to describe the French.

It gets a lot less attractive than that.

Earth to Molly; the French had better quality tanks than the Germans, it was the tactics that stunk.

IThey were out-manned, out-gunned, out-generaled and, above all, out-tanked. They got slaughtered, but they stood and they fought. Ha-ha, how funny.

Had France enforced their own resolutions on Germany against rearming when they had the military advantage, they wouldn't have been put in that position. (I'm sure the French, histroy buffs all, can see the connection to Iraq.) Instead, they chose appeasement, tried to avoid getting their hands dirty until there was a 'smoking gun', and they got slaughtered. Ha-ha, how funny.

The problem I have with the French is not that they are ungrateful to us for saving their asses in WWI and WWII.
I don't believe in throwing things up into peoples faces.

It's that they know that we are ready and willing to save their asses again in spite of their arrogance.

That's what really burns me.

For those of you who have not read Paris 1919, I recommend it highly. Roosevelt was anti-colonialist. That system was a great evil, a greater horror even than Nazism or Stalinism.

Colonialism a greater evil than Nazism or Stalinism? I imgaine she thinks that littering is a greater crime than bank robbery or assault and battery. Or that America is a worse country than Iraq or North Korea.

Surrender monkeys? Try Dien Bien Phu. Yes, the French did surrender, didn't they? After 6,000 French died in a no-hope position.

They were foolish to get themselves in this position. Their disaster was well earned.

Charles de Gaulle came back into power in 1958, specifically elected to keep Algeria French. I consider de Gaulle's long, slow, delicate, elephantine withdrawal (de Gaulle even looked like an elephant) one of the single greatest acts of statesmanship in history.

So was this one. If colonialism is worse than Nazism or Stalinism, then pro-colonialism de Gaulle (by her arguements) would appears to have acted like a cowardly Hitler, afraid to enforce his own brand of evil. That makes her Top Ten list?

Hitler threw everything he had at Poland, and it still took over three weeks to secure its portion of the country (the other part being taken by the Red Army).

France had a larger army and a larger tank force than Germany, but instead of attacking the skeleton holding force on Germany's wester border, they sat around on their asses for eight months, until Germany attacked and outflanked them.

They got slaughtered, but they stood and they fought. Ha-ha, how funny. -- Yeah, Molly, I'll bet that's exactly what Hitler thought.

they chose appeasement

as did every other country. why does that make the french more culpable than the brits or the americans?

I usually don't agree with Ivins, but she's the first columnist to remind all the half-educated "history buffs" who've been bashing the french, of a guy named Lafayette. Along with changing the name french fries and similar red-necked stupidity, maybe we should also change the name of Lafayette Park?

Molly Ivans and her ilk, America's worthless shreds of human debris, are not unlike the Bund movement prior to WWII. Back then, they said Hitler wasn't really a problem of our concern, and that we should not enter the war. People like Charles Linburgh, Henry Ford, and Joseph Kennedy!

In retrospect, look how foolish those views were.

Molly and her gang at the Hollywood Left are the Joe Kennedys of 2003. Bank on it.

Tell me, is Gen. Schwartzkopf also a SURRENDER MONKEY? He's got doubts about invading Iraq without proof that Iraq was behind 9-11. Or how bout George Bush himself? Is he a SURRENDER MONKEY because he doesn't want to invade North Korea - even though North Korea is threatening war right now, something Saddam (evil bastard though he is) isn't doing?

After France helped America get it's
freedom from England, they had their
own revolution.
After the revolution they wiped out
the top 10% of their brains.
Every since they have a lower IQ.
