Again, you confuse the physical burdens with the economic ones. They are not analogous.

Thanks ... that's what I was thinking about, Theology of the Body. I heard a radio program on these teachings and was floored (in a good way!) by how apropos the teaching was to marriage, love and sex.

You say women can't be "forced" to have an abortion, but many, many women who do abort feel they have NO CHOICE and feel that they are forced to have the abortion because there are no other options ... they have no support from the man who impregnated them (often, they say "It's your choice, but I'm not going to take care of the kid"); no support from their parents or friends; they are faced with financial responsibilities they never considered, emotional problems they've never faced, and no support structure. They are not given viable options (financial assistance, adoption referrals, etc). They ARE, in a sense, "forced" to abort because they see no other way to handle this situation on their own. Take all this with the physical hormonal changes in pregnancy, it's no wonder women go to the abortion mills in tears thinking they have no choice.

As to support from both parents, my father dumped my mother and left the country so he wouldn't have to financially support me. This was pre Roe v. Wade, but even then, in 1969, my father told my mother to get an abortion. Thank God she didn't ... and thank God she had supportive parents who let her move back home and helped her financially and emotionally for the first year of my life.

Pregnancy and childbirth have risks nowhere near the risks of abortion. The major problem is that the abortionists and their media hacks do everything in their power to minimize the risks, or outright lie, and the risks are, generally, more long-term (breast cancer, inability to conceive or carry a baby to term, and severe emotional anguish to the mother who aborted). Not to mention the women killed during an abortion, or rendered sterile.

But all this begs the point: a child is a child is a child, no matter how small. An embryo is a child ... because that is a human embryo, a human person, in her smallest state. To kill that human person is a barbaric act.

God bless.

The title of the article is Murdered Matrimony: Death Did Them Part

The title posted has nothing to do with the story nor is it the correct title.

Domestic Violence in Pregnancy

http://pregnancy.about.com/library/weekly/aa040101a.htm

It is estimated that one in five women will be abused during pregnancy. As homicide during pregnancy now surpasses the previous leading causes of death (automobile accidents and falls), it is more important than ever that we know the signs and properly screen women for domestic violence.

Pregnancy is supposed to be a time of peace and safety. A time where the family turns its thoughts towards raising the next generation and growing a healthy baby. Unfortunately for many women, pregnancy can be the beginning of a violent time in their lives.

Effects of Domestic Abuse on Pregnancy & Labor

Domestic abuse and violence against pregnant women has immediate and lasting effects. While some of the complications you might suspect are present, such as immediate injury to the woman or her baby, there are also other effects on the pregnancy.

Many women who are battered during pregnancy will continue unhealthy habits due to stress, such as smoking, resorting to drug use and improper nutritional habits. These also affect the pregnancy.

Immediate effects on the pregnancy can include:

1. Blunt Trauma to the Abdomen
2. Hemorrhaging (including placental separation)
3. Uterine rupture
4. Miscarriage/Stillbirth
5. Preterm labor
6.Premature rupture of the membranes

Abuse, both in the past and in a current relationship, particularly sexual abuse, has been shown to have effects on laboring women. There is even some speculation as to whether or not previous history of sexual abuse can delay the baby from dropping into the pelvis, make the pushing stage longer, etc.

The constant pelvic exams by multiple people, the lack of privacy, the increasing sensations in the pelvic area from contractions and the baby, and the potential for feeling of lost self-control all contribute to potential triggers for the women with these histories.

Counseling prior to labor, involvement of the primary midwife or doctor can help lessen these sensations for the abuse survivor in the labor scenario. Precautions taken to ensure fewer vaginal exams, pain relief of the choice of the woman, and reduction in the number of extraneous personnel at the birth are all ways to reduce the incidence of problems for these women.

Screening for Domestic Abuse

It is estimated that one in five women will be abused during pregnancy. As homicide during pregnancy now surpasses the previous leading causes of death (automobile accidents and falls), it is more important than ever that we know the signs and properly screen women for domestic violence.

The good news is that many women have a relationship with a health care provider, particularly during pregnancy and well baby visits, after the birth (even for lower income families). This allows more opportunities for screening and prevention.

What we still need to work on is making sure that the care providers and emergency room workers know the signs of abuse and what to do about them. Currently about 17% of all routine health care providers screen for domestic violence at their first visit, with only 10% screening at subsequent visits.

Signs of Abuse

Abused women come from all backgrounds and socioeconomic areas. There are barriers to determining who has suffered abuse because of fear of reprisal from the violent partner, lack of knowledgeable viable alternatives to money and housing issues, and embarrassment that she is even in this situation. Practitioners need to be sensitive to these issues.

Common signs might be:

1. Delay in seeking prenatal care
2. Unexplained bruising or damage to her breasts or abdomen
3. Continued use of products harmful to pregnancy (cigarettes, drugs, alcohol)
4. Reoccurring psychosomatic illnesses
5. Lack of attendance to prenatal education

Getting Help

Help is available for those involved in abusive relationships. Many states have programs to provide you with shelter and clothing, even prenatal care. The American Institute on Domestic Violence has a great page of resources, including a state by state listing of organizations. There is also a listing of international sites available. Remember, that help is available, and you are not alone. Please, for your sake and your baby's do not delay in seeking help, your lives may depend on it.

"Pregnancy and childbirth have risks nowhere near the risks of abortion."

That is a false statement.

I agree many women, especially younger ones, feel pressure to have an induced abortion.

I have confused nothing, as a careful, openminded reading of my post will evidence. What I would love to hear, just ince from your postings, is the recognition of just what it is that is aborted. Do you even know what is aborted?

Actually, what you characterize as a false statement is not at all false. You might want to read the following LINK dealing with the morbidity of abortion as opposed to child bearing. [Here's the URL, http://www.afterabortion.org/PAR/V8/n2/finland.html, if you have trouble with the link.]

Why do you think the information is false? Can you provide evidence that the study is a fake? That their methodology is erroneous?

In the past, there was a higher incidence of death of women delivering for a variety of reasons, predominately medical. Breech births, unknown ectopic pregnancies, internal bleeding, and a host of other complications could cause a birthing mother to die.

However, medical science has dramatically lowered the mortality rate of pregnant women delivering. It is now routine to perform an early ultrasound (before 12 weeks) to confirm that there is no ectopic pregnancy. It is routine to perform an ultrasound midway through the pregnancy to help diagnose any potential problems with the mother or baby, there are routine blood tests to diagnose most potentially major problems, like the rhnegative factor, gestational diabetes, etc.

If you think the data provided by the poster is false, please provide a link to data to the contrary so that thoughtful people can weigh all the information available and determine which is most likely accurate.

Thank you, and God bless.

I think you are saying economic costs of raising a child to the physical risks and costs of gestation and childbirth are the same thing. They aren't.

I can't help but think you are missing my point; I'm not talking about whether the law is good, I'm talking about what the basis of the law IS.
