SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A terror suspect tried to commit suicide in U.S. detention at Guantanamo Bay, a military spokesman said Saturday.
It was the 21st suicide attempt at the camp since it was set up in January 2002. The detainee, who attempted suicide Friday, was treated at the base hospital and was under medical observation, spokesman Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said by telephone from the base.
"Guards intervened immediately and prevented any serious harm from taking place," Johnson said, but declined to give further details. He said the suicide was a "repeat attempt" but didn't say how many times the man had tried to kill himself.
There are about 650 detainees at the U.S. Naval base in Cuba, and all are accused of having links to Afghanistan (news - web sites)'s Taliban regime or al-Qaida, though none has been charged with a crime or allowed access to lawyers.
There have been 11 suicide attempts since the beginning of the year, including one in January that left a man with serious brain damage. Most prisoners have used bed sheets or pieces of clothing to try to hang themselves.
The United States is facing increased international pressure to release the detainees. Amnesty International has demanded an inquiry into whether U.S. interrogation methods were contributing to the suicide attempts. U.S. officials insist the questioning is humane.
The military is opening a new hospital ward for terror suspects with mental problems, and guards have been given training to watch for suicide attempts, base officials said.

"Amnesty International has demanded an inquiry into whether U.S. interrogation methods were contributing to the suicide attempts."
----
But Amnesty International did NOT demand inquiries into the murders of the Taliban and Saddam.

I cannot express in polite terms how stupid it is that this information makes it to the public. The Muslim "street" does not need to know this. And neither do liberal American jurists!

Amnesty International complained about Iraq's overcrowded prisons. Saddam fixed it. He had thousands of prisoners drug out and hung on meat hooks. That's why Amnesty International now leaves Iraq alone. LMAO!!!
As for our "guests" attempting suicide, I am just greatful we were able to save them so that they can continue to enjoy their lifelong Cuban vacation.

I can already hear DU crying about these poor victims of cowboy imperialism.
