LA HABRA -- Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard days after the terrorist attacks in 2001 and have maintained ever since.

However, although officers witnessed the vandalism Saturday afternoon, police did not arrest three people seen damaging the display because they were "exercising the same freedom of speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt. John Rees said Monday.

"For this to be vandalism, there had to be an ill-will intent,' he said.

I agree,

Some here don't realize that it was the people in this California neighborhood that put up and maintained this memorial with their own money and time. They didn't have to do this. And now the AHs come out of the wood work to attack the entire state...... Total BS.....

LOL, we love ya Joe. You have about 75-80% of the state infested with illegals and socialists. At least we in Florida had the common sense to fence them into Palm Beach, Dade and Broward counties!!!

'Antiwar' Is Anti-American
On this semianniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks--they happened 18 months ago today--a story from La Habra, Calif., tells you all you need to know about the "antiwar" movement. The Whittier Daily News reports:

Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard days after the terrorist attacks in 2001 and have maintained ever since.

One Les Howard, a sociology professor at Whittier College tells the news that, as the paper puts it, "the incident might be an indication of some confusion among people trying to stop a possible war against Iraq but uncertain how to express their sentiments." Leave it to a sociology prof to explain away an act of pure hatred as the work of well-intentioned but mixed-up folks.

From later in the article:

Les Howard, a sociology professor at Whittier College, said the incident might be an indication of some confusion among people trying to stop a possible war against Iraq but uncertain how to express their sentiments. However, he said he does not condone the destruction of symbols important to those who erect them.

"Some think (the best way to support the troops) is to not question their role. Some think the best way is to pursue all means possible to avoid putting them in danger,' he said. "That still does not excuse any desecration of people's symbolic participation.

What a bleeping excuse-making, agenda-hiding, mealy-mouthed pinhead.

"Uncertain how to express their sentiments," my a**! These vandals knew EXACTLY what they were doing, leaving a Dylan anti-war song behind to make their "point."

They were there to desecrate, minimalize, and trivialize the horror visited on our country 18 months ago to the day, and to tell all of us, but especially the memorial-builders, that it was really no big deal, and we deserved it anyway.

If anything is a hate crime, this is.

205 & 206: must be telepathy:

"Leave it to a sociology prof to explain away an act of pure hatred as the work of well-intentioned but mixed-up folks."

Taranto says it so much better, and in fewer words.

I have a suggestion for them to "express their sentiments"

How about placing their heads in front of a steamroller, blowing their brains out with pistols, or gargling with razor blades in a tank full of Pirhanas??

This memorial is just north of me and I pass it on Whittier Blvd. at least once a week or more.
It was put up by the poor residents of that community. It is made up of home made posters, flags, dixie cups and other such humble stuff.
I can tell you it is a poorer, bad and mostly Mexican neighborhood. There are some gangs there as well.

The police most likely took names I am sure (or would hope). If they were burning flags displayed in public, I am sure they did "not" have permits to create a fire near or in public streets.
You can't run around CA legally burning just anything on fire any time in streets. It is at LEAST a fire hazard that is against the law. How the people who participated in that weren't ticketed or arrested over the issue of the fire is beyond comprehension to me.
We are a desert and we can burn down communities starting fires in illegal places out here.
I will see this memorial tomorrow and will write back what has happened since this post.
I suspect there will be a new better memorial already up.

I can't believe the police don't maintain digital cameras these days and don't record things such as this.
I read the owner is pressing charges.

So do the police now have the names? That for me is where the action is today.

I live just south of there a few miles away.

I wonder if this was actually some of the many Mexican gangs there that did this.

It might have been about the joy of doing damage for them more than about the war.

Identification of who the butt-whipes were will shed a lot of light as to what was actually behind this.

There is no GOOD reason for that to happen and in the very least, with the cops watching, how come they weren't arrested for starting public fires?

I am getting the story now that La Habra PD is stating that their officers did not observe the vandalism or attack on the memorial. LHPD is now stating that they are going to go after the news sources that put out the original story, and hope to get their story out.

They would not get specific, stating that they hope to have their side of the story aired by tomorrow possibly.

They also added that several of their officers are deployed, and that they were completely offended by the national news regarding this incident.

I thought you'd get a kick out of this, I asked earlier on here where we could find how the anti war kooks were spinning this-then I got this email!

(I somehow got on a anti war mailing list, I've absolutely ripped them a new a$$hole, but I still get these rants)

This is the actual email, word for word;

Bunch of nuts but good to know the enemy is not only Democrats:

BeachBum--COINTELPRO agents-This has gotten a lot of play today-Just like during Nam the Disneyland incident did. That was a proven COINTELPRO activity, as I suspect this one to be.

valis--Correction, police did not arrest them because they either planted them or were tipped off that they were working. You don't actually think that these were 'anti-war' protesters, do you? Look who benifits? Seen it a
million times.

Earth_AD--Once the flags were placed on the memorial, did they automatically become Collison's property? If so, his vandalism complaint would be warranted.

Aeryn_Sun--Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs ...
That's nothing. Just wait until OPEC raises the price of oil to recover from the economic impacts of Gulf War Redux.

D_Joyce-- I wonder which Rent A Goon agency they came from.

valis--Perhaps, but contrary to media legend, most who protest against the war are trying to rescue America, not destroy it.

Anyone who was paying attention during WTO Seattle has seen the consequences of violent activity, has seen who was responsible, and noticed the effect and
who benifitted. The gig is up.

...This is the crap I have to deal with in LA. Anyhow, what's COINTELPRO? Probably means something to these conspiritorial nuts, rather than that their own movement is at its base anti capitialist and anti American. Notice that of this "proof" I was sent, none of the people decry the event.

Interesting...but I don't believe the reporter would print lies....not in this case...the town's too small, she can't hide....it would wreck her career and the local paper's credibility.....

It could also have been one some of the criminal illegal aliens who have gangs there as well.

I wonder if this was actually some of the many Mexican gangs there that did this.

I doubt that they are going to bother gluing a Bob Dylan song to a sign that said, "America, land of the brave, home of the free."

I seriously doubt it was gang related.

Incidentally, it was mostly constructed by elementary school students. The people that did this are commies no doubt.

These people should read this.

I wonder if, since today is "kind of" an anniversary for 9/11, if that was another reason for doing this?

Whatever the reason, clearly these are people with nothing but hate in their hearts. And I'm not saying hate for any one particular thing.

Just simple, pure hate.

What do you expect from a state which elects Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi?

You idiot, what about the people and neighbors of that entire area that have privately maintained that memorial since 911. It has been standing since 911. I know people in that area, and they are great for putting this up and maintaining it.
