PITTSBURGH (AP) A man who hunted deer on his own property will spend 15 years in federal prison because he was a convicted felon, and therefore not allowed to possess a gun.

Jack C. Altsman, 43, of Beaver Falls, received the mandatory sentence Friday from U.S. District Judge Terrence McVerry.

Why bother having a judge, when all you need is a Judge-O-matic?

That will be next, right after they do away with juries.

So what? He's a convicted felon.

You ought to retitle the article as "ex con stupidly in possession of weapon gets the sentence he deserves".

Your NRA at work. "Project Exile"

Since it is a gun felony, he is likely to do more hard time than real rapists, thugs and thieves.

Best regards,

Where is it written that an ex-convict loses his constitutional rights?

Given many comments on another thread a lot of FReepers wouldn't have a problem with this.

Ditto - the headline is seriously misleading. I'd think freepers or conservatives would support this guy's sentence if he was an ordinary felon on the city street who had that weapon and wasn't supposed to (even if he wasn't bothering anyone or robbing a bank). No one should let their bias toward hunting or gun ownership affect his or her judgement in this.

Think G. Gordon Liddy would get slapped with 15 years for walking around with his wife's handguns on his own property?

He is a real thief - a two time burglar.

Yup, he's just the kind of guy who needs to possess firearms.

which brings up the "do the time, repay your debt, rights restored argument".

the man has a right to bear arms, for hunting and for self defense, if he was still a threat to the public, he'd still be in prison...

Liddy has been very cautious to say on the air that any shooting or weapons handling he does occurs outside the United States. And yes, if those are the standards that apply to all those felons in the 'hood of a variety that many FReepers don't like, then they are the standards that should apply to gun fanatics, whether they be Liddy, some white collar guy, or some toothless camo-clad trailer dweller.

Stupid evil laws are supported by stupid evil people. This sort of nonsense reduces the respect that reasonable people feel for rational laws and to legitimate government.

In Central Texas the deer are so thick you don't have to hunt them on your property; you can hunt them on your car hood.

Misleading headline, implying the issue was hunting - considering that the state (at least NY) tells you what/when you can/cannot hunt on your own property.
