I remember seeing the video of that crushed van, they said it was crushed to the size of a trash can.

And that 1999 tornado was actually higher than the scale for an F-5 went. I remember sitting there watching Gary England start yelling at people to get underground and he said he had never told people that before.
Tornado moving to the Luther area along I-44.

I have a friend who used to live in Oklahoma. She said the standard drill was to take a mattress with them to the bathroom, lay in the tub, and cover themselves with the mattress.

This is only the 2nd time that I have heard them tell people to get underground. Secondary is to get into a room/closet in the center of the house. But an F-5 tornado will flatten a house and in 1999 actually took up foundations in some parts of Moore. Geez .. prayers to all in OKC and the surrounding area

Semantics. When I was growing up in southern Oklahoma, we had a dugout and lived in a small box house. We went underground with every clap of thunder. As soon as we got in the dugout to save us from the expected tornado, the conversation turned to snakes and stories about snakes dropping out of the dugout roof down shirt collars. The stories had a way of taking one's mind off the weather.

Tulsa TV 8 reporting no apparent weakening of the storm as it moves through Chandler/Stroud toward Bristow/Sapulpa/Tulsa.

Move as close as can to a Medical facility your power will not be out long. Good point! I think it's the same up here... probably everywhere, actually.

How are you still able to have electrical power during all this storm activity? We have the slightest breeze here in my neck of the woods in Connecticut, and the damn power goes out.
Most of the electric lines around residential neighborhoods in Edmond are buried. I live about 4 miles north from where the twister crossed I-35. We had 70-75mph northerly winds right after it came to the I-35 and I-44 junction. About 3 minutes later 40-50mph southerly winds for only a minute or two. My 15ft maple tree in the front yard was holding on for dear life!

Do a web search for "Jarrell" "Texas" and "Tornado" that one is the gold standard for F5s if you want to see some pics.
People don't really have a concept of F5 damage. It doesn't mean destroyed houses, it means a PERFECTLY clean foundation with no debris from the house within half a mile. And pavement ripped up.

There was a large tornado in Texas a number of years ago that was so strong that it actually pulled pipes from the foundations and also blew away the sidewalks, could you imagine the wind it would take to blow away a sidewalk. There wasnt even any debris left over, just empty cement slabs.

Thanks!
I live about two miles from the Storm Prediction Center here in Norman. It is strange to be watching this as it is so close to here and today my daughter and I were in OKC crossing where the tornado yesterday crossed over I-35.
Looks like this supercell containted more than one tornado at a time. Right now in the Jones area there looks to be three tornadoes on the ground.
Local news is now going out to their reporters in the field.

How awful! We don't get too many tornadoes in my area, and none that have the magnitude you're describing.
Prayers all around.

The one here in May 1999 actually took up some slabs and left the lots totally without a thing. It sucked the grass right out of the ground and left brown earth. It was huge through Moore in 1999.

Turner Turnpike has been closed by the OHP. Wiley Post airport in NW OKC has heavy damage. WP is the largest General aviation airport in OKC.

Bingo! Jarrel Texas, that was the one I was talking about where sidewalks were blown away and there was no debris left.......unimaginable!

They are saying the mesocyclone is increasing again which means the circulation is gaining strength again as it travels along the turnpike!
