Depending on where you go and in what circles you travel, conservatives are livid with the Bush administration. Some, more so than others, are furious over the size of the federal budget, the failing to rein in any kind of spending, tax cuts for people who don't pay taxes, the Medicare prescription drug benefit, the list continues - and there’s a great deal of head scratching going on.
I came across an Associated Press story over the weekend that attempts to shed some light on what’s happening, which you can hear me read in the audio links below. However, the story seems to imply there’s a conspiracy between the White House and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas.
Here’s just one excerpt: “DeLay has become the most identifiable representative of the party's right wing, and the two Texans have had a sometimes scrappy relationship. Clashes may become more frequent as Bush moves beyond his current phase of fund raising among loyal Republicans and shifts his attention to the general electorate, analysts suggest. At the same time, Bush and his advisers are mindful that if they go too far, they could alienate conservatives whose support he needs. ‘Bush is carefully picking and choosing his fights,’ said GOP consultant Scott Reed. ‘There's a healthy back and forth between the White House staff and DeLay that is mutually beneficial to both.’”
The story continues to suggest that Bush is telling DeLay to go ahead and stop what he’s trying to do - on purpose. The idea being that Bush can thus claim credit for supporting whatever measure, while DeLay and other conservatives can point to victory for blocking its ultimate passage. A caller later asked: “Isn't this the same strategy that Bush used on campaign finance reform, only he is counting on the Supreme Court to shoot it down?” You can hear my answer below.

If the democrats and the middle didn't desert Clinton, why would the Republicans and the middle desert Bush?
I missed that nugget of news. Thanks for sharing some positive news for a change.
He has been very slow at replacing the clintonistas in the Department of Interior, the land grabs continue, he expanded the Department of Education, his "No Child Left Behind," program is the next step in Outcome Based Education-Goals 2000-School to Work, the Soviet Education System. The increase in funding the Arts, I won't go into what is now considered art. Massive expansion of the Farm Program, (can you say welfare for Archer Daniels Midland.) the Hart Rudman Homeland Defense Act. Taking your tax dollars and buying prescriptions for seniors, Tax Cuts, (more welfare) for those who don't pay taxes. He resisted arming pilots, supports the Assult Weapons Ban. Since I live near the Mexican Border, my favorite has to be, his open border policy.
Please help me find a reason to support him.

I would guess that if President Bush issued executive orders to outlaw abortion, packed the Supreme Court with conservatives, ordered Ashcroft to indict Clinton tomorrow, and cancelled both the Education and Farm Subsidy bills...

OK Fred, we now see what principles you have. Issuing executive orders over abortion would deny the authority of the Supreme Court. President Bush has no authority to order an indictment of the Clintons. Cancelling the two bills, passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law, would be blatantly unconstitutional. You apparently want a dictator who will rule in the manner you prefer.

I'm sorry, old friends. I've got to disagree with you.
Look at where this money is coming from.
Agribusiness, the hotel and entertainment business, the construction industry and the textile corporations all depend on cheap labor for increased profits.
As long as GW keeps the borders open, they'll contribute to his campaign.
It's simply not true that Conservatives are happy with GW.
There is too much socialistic water under the bridge since he took office to make them satisfied.
All of this pains me greatly because I loved that man more than any President we have ever had in my lifetime.
I still respect his decision to go into Iraq, and I admire his courage in doing so.
With his domestic policies, however, I feel betrayed like so many Conservatives I talk with every day.
I thought he displayed some leadership qualities for a while, but now I see him as a politician and marionette. Very sad to see Dubya play his assigned role rather than exhibiting presidential leadership.
Or go to one of the third party sites and find like-minded folks who will kvetch in unison, and where you can feel self-satisfied at your principles.
We're all dead meat, Cobby. I had high hopes too. I went to the FR Inaugural Ball because I was so hopeful.
That was then and boy was I a sucker.
