Sixth home shooting bloodies thief N. Memphis woman gives $200, then 2 shots from .32

By Bill Dries dries@gomemphis.com July 19, 2003

A woman gave a home invasion robber $200 before dawn Friday, then pulled a gun from her china cabinet and shot at him twice when the robber demanded even more money.

Police found a trail of blood inside and outside the house at 906 Meagher in North Memphis and were looking for a suspect at local hospitals Friday.

The shooting is at least the sixth incident since June in which a Memphis homeowner or resident has shot or shot at attackers. Like the other incidents, it will be reviewed by state prosecutors.

This is what happened about 2 a.m. Friday, according to a police report:

The robber took a screen off a back room window of the house, raised the window and crawled inside. He confronted the homeowner, Estella Schaefer, 65, and demanded money. He apparently was not armed.

It took Schaefer 15-20 minutes to look for money as he waited and she then gave him $200 in cash.

The robber told Schaefer, "'I know you've got more money than that. Someone told me,'" the police report says.

That's when Schaefer reached into her china cabinet and pulled a .32-caliber black revolver, shooting twice at the robber as he ran toward her to take the gun away from her.

He failed to get the gun, but Schaefer was cut on her left knuckle during the struggle. She declined medical assistance.

The robber ran out a side door and north on Meagher.

Police found a trail of blood going out of the house and for about half a block on a sidewalk on Meagher. They believe the robber was wounded.

Schaefer, who could not be reached by The Commercial Appeal for comment, told police that she didn't know if she hit the robber with either shot and had never seen him before.

Police described him as a black man in his mid- to late 20s, standing 5-foot-7 and weighing about 200 pounds.

A wave of shootings involving confrontations at people's homes began June 13 when David Ronald Washington, 44, was shot to death after breaking into a home at 3980 Wildwind Cove. He was the man police have identified as the East Memphis "cat burglar."

That same day, Kevin Martrell Humphrey, 19, was shot to death and a second suspect was injured when they tried to force their way into a home at 2959 Lark.

On July 9, William Ronnie Payne, 45, was shot and killed after trying to force his way into a home at 4212 Warbonnet.

Ricky Ricardo Wilborn, 21, was killed and Ali R. Ford, 24, was critically wounded July 11 when a man police say they robbed at an East Memphis ATM shot them as they took him by force back to his house at 4555 Dunn to get more money.

All of those shootings were ruled justified after a case-by-case review by the District Attorney General's Office.

However, police on Tuesday charged Joseph Jones Jr., 22, with two counts of reckless endangerment after he fired six blasts from a 12-gauge shotgun at a man he caught breaking into his shed at 1427 Leflore Place.

Jones didn't hit the burglar, but one of the shotgun blasts shattered a bedroom window at the house next door, narrowly missing two children who had been asleep in the room.

Jones claimed the burglar was armed and that the burglar shot at him as he fled.

Yeah.
My wife, who's never fired a semi-auto before, scored several 9 ring shots at 50 yards with an unzero'd Ruger 10/22.

If she can hit that itty bitty target at 50 yards with an unzero'd carbine, she could've blasted the guy back out the window with change to spare.

But.. six shots with no hits? And the guy admitted it?
That's just pathetic.
As I said, there's women with absolutely NO training or experience who could have shown better.

Side story about an 80 year old women with no gun accessible.

Parolee in socal breaks into home and starts to sexually assault 80 year old. She puts up quite a fight and the guy starts to sweat and leaves the house. Runds out into the street where he is hit by a car and breaks his leg. Cops had been called due to all the screaming and when they arrived the perp was dragging his broken leg down the street in a slow-speed getaway.

"a compact .22mag revolver would be a good ladies gun"

What a sexist thing to say! You sorta remind me of almost all my female gun students (I'm an NRA certified Firearms Instructor) who had a "Dad" or "boyfriend" offer to show them how to shoot a gun...then hand the poor gal a huge kicker like a 12 ga in 3" magnum or a 44 maggie and then laugh gently at their terrified faces at the recoil/noise and say...."That's alright darlin' I'll always be there to protect you..."

When I teach 'em, I start out (everybody starts this way even if I'm qualifying an Airborne Ranger for a FL CCW!) with a SA .22LR and gradually work every person up to the minimum I believe is needed for self defense: Either a .38sp revolver or a 9mm semi-auto.

THEN I go with them to the gun show and encourage them to pick up and fondle as many guns as they can...because picking a self defense carry weapon is a lot like picking a mate (draw your own conclusions...this is a family forum).

In any case, when you find THE ONE...you'll know it as sure as King Arthur knew it when he drew Excalibur from the stone....a perfect fit. Then...I don't care what it is...size or caliber. You buy it and I'll teach you to use it to defend yourself and carry it with maximum comfort.

fso301...SHAME on you for being so sexist. My wife carries a Colt Combat Commander in 45ACP. The president of my gunclub....is a GUNSITE grad and a woman....and sudden death in every direction. In the last 15 years, this woman has had to draw against a criminal at least four times.

Oh yeah and I forgot, my recently engaged 22 year old daughter...the Brittany Spears look alike (without the immorality) I taught to shoot at age 10. She now carries with a FL CCW permit, a Ruger SP101 DAO in .357mag and always loaded with MagSafes and w/2 sp speedloaders.

Ouch.
Did they chase him in a slow speed chase ala OJ? (I know, bad joke.)

I remember hearing about one woman who was raped, let the guy get off her.. then chased him down the stairs with a gun. She puts a round into either the floor or the wall next to his head and gets him to lay down and surrender.
She then calls teh cops.
Hearing taht the cops are on their way, the bad guy decides to try and run.
She's watching and ON THE 911 CALL, she tells the perp "Don't F'ing move! I will shoot you where you lay!"
He complies, and the cops find her pretty much naked and scratched up sitting on her entryway desk with her legs to her chest, phone to her ear and cupped in her shoulder, and both hands on the gun pointed at the creep.
I was surprised that they didn't shoot her and declare the bad guy a hero.
Especially considering the way gun owners are viewed by some.

"not in Tennessee". Almost everybody here is armed."

Is that why Al Gore lost there in his own home state....'cause those righteous country folk knew he planned to take their guns?

I'm prolly stuck with small guns.
My hands are too small for most double stackers.
And being a guy, this is embarrassing.

I think the Memphis police underreport the crime and gang fights

That's what happens when you get yearly rollups of all the crime in the city. How are you going to know if Ms Betty's breakin was included in that report? There's no way for you to tell.
Newspapers should publish weekly reports of break ins.

I'm just not convinced that 9mm is sufficient "oomph" for when the digestive byproducts hit the rotating ventilation device.

I am of like mind. Ah well, that's why I'm around, I suppose. I keep a loaded .45 and a 12-gauge (slug loads) on hand at all times.

Sure, I live in California where the criminal is the only state-sanctioned victim*, so I know I'm in for some serious s--- if I ever have to drop an intruder.

-Jay

* - Citizens who defend themselves with lethal force in California are often subject to Grand Jury investigations which can run a legal bill in excess of $40,000. Meanwhile, if the criminal survives his injury, the shooter can look forward to being sued by the perp in civil court. (And people wonder why I have such low regard for this state??)

I still hold oou for some wide spread common sense, especially when you're out of the big cities.

If your story had an 80 year old, her leg would not have been to her chest. Her chest would have been to her leg. I apologize in advance.

"You gotta watch out for those pistol-packin' grannies."

Before she became the first female President of the NRA, Marion Hammer was a pistol packin' granny and faced down a robber in a Tallahassee parking garage with a .38sp. Damn straight you'd best watch out for them! My wife's dad is almost far more dangerous. He's about to turn 80 in a few weeks. He's a WWII marine aviator with like 16 kills and two DFC's for flying with the famed "Black Sheep Sqdn" in the Pacific. This old guy...I had to dern near tie him down 'cause he was threatening to kill slick willy back when he was in the White House and had just pushed the AW ban thru. Pop kept ranting about he was OLD and almost "done" anyhow and he could still give his life for his country.....wow.

*chuckle*
True enough.
Being in New York.. There's a story of and elderly woman who had her purse snatched.
Well, as the purse was pulled away, her hand came out of it revealing what she was holding.
A .357 mag.
She shot the punk in the back of the leg, basically taking it off at the knee in effect, considering without a kneecap you can't stand.
The cops tried to arrest her.

In a seperate story, a guy broke into a house and was blown away by the enraged homeowner. The burglars
'estate' tried to sue the homeowner for keeping the crook from plying his trade.
Which happened to include violent rape.

Sometimes I wonder what dimension this is.

I have pretty small hands, too. You don't need a double stacker to defend yourself unless you subscribe to the spray and pray doctrine. Firepower isn't number of rounds in the air...it's the number of accurate dynamic hits on the target. I'll bet you could handle a ParaOrdnance C6 .45ACP with not much practice and it would do the job nicely. Not a double stacker. In a pinch if you wanted a large caliber with a small grip you could go with a Ruger Vacquero in 45 Colt (Long Colt) sporting small "Bird's head" grips. Get a 3 or 4 inch barrel and then an old west style shoulder holster. Or you can get my buddy, custom holster maker SAM ANDREWS in Alachua Florida to custom make you an IWB for it. Thats: http://www.andrewsleather.com

It'd be a slow shooter, and a terribly slow reload, but whatever you hit is going to the pavement and right now.
