Hockey season has barely begun but it's over already for a Windsor man charged with attacking his 10-year-old daughter after a game in Pickering. And the 38-year-old accused not only faces criminal charges, he's now barred from seeing his family.
"A 10-year-old girl was leaving the ice," Durham Police Sgt. Paul Malik said. "She was grabbed by the face mask ... yelled at, shaken and hit against the boards.
"(The man) continued yelling at her until he was interrupted by some of the coaches."
The witnesses stepped in to separate the little girl from the man and called police.
She was not hurt but was terribly upset.
The ugly incident happened Sunday afternoon after a game between teams from Windsor and Toronto.
An employee at Don Beer Arena said yesterday staff at the facility had intervened after the alleged assault but had not witnessed it.
The man, whose name was not released to protect his daughter's privacy, is charged with one count of assault and is to appear in Oshawa court on Oct. 14.
Until then, he's not allowed contact with his daughter and has changed his home address to Michigan, Malik said.
The family had moved from the United States to Windsor to allow the girl a more competitive level of play, but she's now been withdrawn from the game by her mother.
The manager of one of the teams at the rink said the man berated the girl for her performance. He said she was crying and terrified.
"This has become the worst thing I've seen in 25 years of hockey," he said.
Neil Oliver, a spokesman for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, acknowledged the incident happened but said the OMHA is still awaiting a report from the arena.
"If this was a father and daughter, this could be more of a family issue than a hockey issue," Oliver said. "We're waiting on the report from the arena to see what events lead up to this.
If the issue is going before the courts, the OMHA will not hold a hearing until legal proceedings are over, he said.
"(These incidents) are very isolated," Oliver said. "At this point we can't jump the gun and say it was hockey related."

Yup. Too many such stories, by far. It's a game, Dads, a game! That's your child. Lighten up and let him/her play the game.

Thirty-eight years old, and picking on a quivering, terrified little ten-year-old girl.
Oh, yeah. Real tough guy, this one.
Puck him, and his mama.

I agree. I have watched my boys' teammates being reduced to tears by their uber-achiever fathers who can't remember what it's like to be a little boy who just flubbed a catch or whiffed a pitch.

I know. It's horribly sad to see a kid who's out there trying to play the game being berated by his own father. I seem to remember making some pretty klutzy errors when I was in Little League. Shoot 8,9, and 10-year-olds are not professional athletes, after all.
I also remember my Dad, after the game, telling me that it was OK, and that everyone fluffs up sometimes. His advice was to shrug it off and try it again.
That seems to me to be the appropriate response by a parent in such situations. I can't even imagine what is going through the creepy dads (and sometimes moms) at these games. Surely they don't think it's good parenting.

Would anyone be interested in forming a roaming band of vigilantes who go to kids' sporting events and rough up fathers who act this way?

The only time my dad gave me a hard time was when he thought I wasn't trying.
Even when I screwed up on the field he would congratulate me for being scrappy and not letting up.
Parents should encourage kids to try their hardest and be tenacious: that's what counts in life in the long run.
