Merry Christmas, America.

It's a rainy, cold night in St. Louis. I’m sitting in the den, listening to Christmas carols playing softly in the living room while my ex-husband, now home, is ironing his clothes for Christmas Mass [it's complicated, so what isn't?] which we will attend once again this year. It's always a beautiful service, filled with the music of angels and the beauty of Christmas. I started to go in to listen to the one-thousandth loop of news from Washington – victory for the left, recriminations from the right and decided not to. As I heard the strains of age-old hymns to the birth of our Lord, I was filled with an extraordinary feeling of love for my country, and I wanted to put it down before I was caught up in the world after these holy days filled with the glow of peace and reconciliation have come to an end.

If I could write a letter to all Americans, I would tell you how proud of you I am. I realize what separates us is a major gulf, but I also recognize that we all really want the same thing – what’s best. It isn’t that the left is unprincipled or immoral, nor is the right. We differ on how to do the right thing. How bad can THAT be?

FreeRepublic has been castigated as being mean and vicious opponents of any charitable works, and the left is demeaned as childish and wanton – without common sense. Again, neither is true. I realize this year has been a jarring experience for all of us, but what I see when I stand back is Americans realizing there are problems, mistakes and omissions that must be rectified.

My prayer for my country is for each of us to be comfortable in our own skin. Realize we all propose to do what is right and get side-tracked by the details. The devil always seems to be in them. I would further pray for Americans to rest in God, Who always honors the petitions of His children which, thankfully, most of us seem to be. That, in and of itself, makes me realize that all the angst and worry amounts to a hill of beans because some of us have already turned the “sausage-making process in Washington” over to Him. I trust that all the backroom deals, all the unconstitutional provisions in the health care bill, all the accountings will be ironed out – not because it’s in the political nature of politicians to do so, but because Our God is able.

I’m an old lioness now. I see the world turning now without having it on my shoulders. I’ve turned over that responsibility to my son and his intended bride. It seems youth relishes the burden and rises to the task that makes the rest of us in our age group shake our heads and say, “Welcome to the NFL, Kid.” So, as the Christmas tree in our home grows smaller, the presents under it fewer, I say with all the gratitude I can muster, “Thank you, God, for all you have given us and don’t let the bad guy in all of us win. Lord, make us honorable; let us love decency and justice more than we love ourselves. Let us all do what is right, not expedient. Let us be faithful to seek Your will and strong enough to endure until all is right – down to the last detail. Don’t let us abrogate our duty to be vigilant in seeking the same from those we elect to do our work."

I’m listening, now, to a 40s-style “Winter Wonderland”. It sways gently to clarinets and Lawence Welk-style vamps. My son’s uniform arrived today from Quantico. He accepts his Commission in January. I think of my mother who saw her brothers in their uniforms, leaving for WWII, my grandmother who saw her husband in his uniform leaving for WWI, my great, great grandmothers seeing their sons dressed in their grey uniforms on one side and blue uniforms on the paternal side going off to the Civil War, my great, great, great, great grandmother watching her husband and sons going off to the Revolutionary War, and realize that we are in a world where things are not always what they should be but, in the end, good always prevails and love never fails. May we always be able to have Christmas to take time, reflect and refresh on where we are and where we want to go and how we want to get there.

So, Merry Christmas, America. Let’s all step away from the fray and refresh. Let’s get the business of America back on track, get it right and rest in the shelter of the Loving God who loved us enough to send His Son into a world that was fretful with misery and alienation and Who managed to overcome it all.

No, some of us want to obey God and grow and we disagree on political details. Others want humanity to shrink, to do that they want to kill children, the disabled and elderly. The left advocates and delivers EVIL.

They are as different as John the Baptist was from Herod the Baby Killer.

Otherwise well done, thank you and Merry Christmas!

“It isn’t that the left is unprincipled or immoral”

Yes, it is.

All leftist thought, from the limousine liberalism of a George Clooney to the mass murders of Mao, Stalin, or Pol Pot, is of and from Satan. It is a contaminant in the human cognosphere, not a natural component of it.

It is far past time for decent people to wake up and realize that when dealing with scumbags, civility is nothing but a self-imposed handicap.

Intellectual dishonesty is not merely the hallmark, the metier, the forte, the oeuvre of the liberal, it is the very sine qua non of liberalism. Compared to this, hypocrisy is a mere spear-carrier in the liberal’s limping army of sophistries, prevarication, and false moral equivalences.

The liberal himself somehow manages to suppress awareness of his own detachment from both reality and honesty, and in fact spends great volumes of energy swanning about in high dudgeon, gushing forth banshee wails of rage at the purported dishonesty and malice of his opponents. Spraying poison in all directions like a rabid cobra on meth, the liberal walks closed-minded through a world in which only he is open-minded, bigoted through a world in which only he is tolerant, ignorant through a world in which only he is educated, consumed by rage, hatred, and malice through a world in which only he is kind and nice.

After a hundred million innocent dead in the twentieth century, no liberal is entitled to the slightest consideration, courtesy, or civility. Liberals should be reviled, abominated, spat upon, even beaten, whenever they have the gall to show their faces in the presence of decent people.
