LOL! Now that's zealousness - seeking out Truth.

I think we can honestly see the differences. The Word of God being the final authority.

John 2:17 And his disciples remembered that IT WAS WRITTEN, The ZEAL of thine house hath consumed him.

He's FULL of ZEAL!

Maybe you need to review the rules.

We can discuss and critique religions, faiths, practices, errors, blasphemies, idolatries, etc.

But we cannot "make it personal" by criticizing another FReeper personally.

Do you understand the difference?

Oh, so that quote from John (written by men, by the way) wasn’t directed at me? If not, why’d you include it?

Much of the worst behavior on the Religion Forum is obviously the fruit of intemperate and/or indiscreet zeal. Once we all realize this, it should change our posting habits here.

What, me worry?

I once heard it preached that if the gospel does not offend it is not the gospel .

Yes, offensive people often hold up their offensiveness as evidence of their righteousness. I've seen it often enough among modern "artists" ...

I'll note that Protestants seem to find Catholic teaching offensive ... that Catholics seem to find Protestant teaching offensive, that Christians, Jews and Moslems are all mutually offended by each others' teachings ...

I guess we're all "preaching the gospel", right? After all, we're all preaching something that offends somebody ...

Or maybe offensiveness isn't the be-all and end-all of preaching (or art) that some would have us believe.

All those reproaches, count it all gain

Psalm 69:9

For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Romans 15 :3

For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED YOU FELL ON ME."

Hijack? This behavior was the whole point of the thread. And my comment was a test. And you failed, like a half dozen others already. Is this what passes for critical thinking in your community? what a joke.

Heinlein fan? (your tagline)

Now THERE was an "intemperate" fellow with a lot of "zeal" for unChristian thought and behavior...

Stranger in a Strange Land

His books were quite popular with the "free love" crowd in the sixties, now that "critical thinking" has been mentioned. In 1968, Tim Zell (now Oberon Zell-Ravenheart) and others formed a neo-pagan religious organization called the Church of All Worlds, modeled after the religion founded by the primary characters in the novel.

There is an important distinction.

I can and do intervene to keep posters from "making it personal."

There is nothing I can do to keep posters from "taking it personally."

Posters who continually take things personally are thin-skinned and should ignore "open" Religion Forum threads altogether and instead post to threads labeled "caucus" "ecumenical" "prayer" or "devotion."

.. I am not looking to make friends or faux christians so that we all can get along

- - - - - -

Exactly. I would rather be hated for speaking the truth about Christ then be liked for having lied about it or soft sold it.

Now, that said, I do NOT like the little nit picky fights among the Body of Christ on MINOR points of doctrine, but when you start talking about the reliability of the Bible in matters of faith and doctrine, WHO Christ is, WHAT He did, Where He did it, and His relationship to God the Father, then we are at the point of salvific doctrines.

One thing I was taught in Bible college was that if the Bible is not CLEAR on a doctrine then it is PROBABLY not a doctrine that affects Salvation but rather a matter of conscience that should not divide the body of Christ.

You embedded this sentence

I didn't "embed" anything. I intended to make myself really really clear. If I didn't, I'll repeat what I said, highlighting and augmenting it for emphasis so that it is easily visible to everyone...

Roman Catholic apologists cannot defend from Scripture their idolatrous religious practices (Mariology, transubstantion, works-based salvation, justification through sanctification, priests as "another Christ,") so they base their filmsy rebuttal on personal insults, distortions, errors and "vain jangling."

Better?

I don’t have much problem with Freepers using zeal to preach their faith. Where we run into problems is expecting people to soft-peddle their true beliefs and feelings in order to avoid offending others. This kind of religious-correctness just encourages people to hide their feelings, which somehow find a way out anyway. I have always considered it better to allow someone to express themselves freely so I can know with whom I deal.

I have occasionally been tripped up by what I thought was an honest inquiry about my faith, only to be attacked once I posted what I thought was a simple, informational response. I have no respect for those who troll on this site merely to bash another religion but my getting bashed is my own fault. FR has a means by which we can see the posting history of any poster before we respond. And if we don’t want to go to the trouble of checking out a poster, once we are bashed, we have the screen name of the basher and can avoid fruitless debate with that poster. If you simply ignore the attempts to sucker you, the anti’s just end up debating each other with posts they repeat over and over.

We here at Free Republic should be very cautious about attempting to control the messages, beyond basic civility, of course.

For the most part, it just takes a bit of humility, and a smattering of good manners.

I've got ALL of that' so I am ok!

Good to go!

“I can and do intervene to keep posters from “making it personal.”

And based on how many posts meant for me have been deleted (in the past), you have a busy job. And that’s my whole point, the worst perpetrators are those who cloak themselves in a religion that rejects that very behavior.

If by "fixed" you mean, "made a dishonest change to feeed your own, personal prejudices." I will thank you to not do that again.

I wrote what I wrote for a reason. Your behavior simply reinforces my point about the perception of arrogant behavior by those who call themselves Christians.

Jesus said they would know us by how much we LOVE ONE ANOTHER" not heathens or heretics ... We are to have no fellowship with darkness..

Critical point here. Having "no fellowship" does not obviate the command to love my neighbor, even my heretical and heathen neighbor. It is no great thing to love folks who are just like me. It's easy.

Loving that nasty _________ (inset most despised person / group) - there is the hard stuff. The impossible that is demanded.
