The Doctrine of Temple Work (Mormonism - Open)
Ensign ^ | October 2003 | Elder David E. Sorensen

Posted on 10/26/2010 5:17:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Snip

...Joseph Smith warned of the consequences when we fail to use the temples available to us: “Those Saints who neglect [temple work] in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.”

Snip

A key function of temples is to perform ordinance work for our deceased ancestors. When we think of temple ordinances and the necessity to do them perfectly, without error...

“… For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation...they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect” (D&C 128:5, 15;...).

Consider the...vision of President Joseph F. Smith...:

“Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins...having rejected the prophets.

Snip

The Lord revealed through... Joseph: “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, … through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power … are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead” (D&C 132:7).

Snip

...One of the great privileges we have is the wearing of the garment...

...The garment, … when properly worn, will serve as a protection against temptation and evil.

“It is expected that members will wear the garment both night and day...Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing...The garment should not be removed for activities which might reasonably be done with the garment worn beneath the clothing...

Why is it @ Mormon testimony meetings we don't hear testimonies about how somebody's temple garment (Underwear) saved them from temptation and evil? Anybody know of such a testimony?

At least God proclaimed in the past 30 years that garments could be two-piece instead of those All In One that made you completely undress to use the restroom.

Therefore, let me say it again, then by that reasoning the Jews are all “saved” because Jesus Christ (the Savior of the World) is the same as Heavenly Father of the Old Testament on which the Jews believe.

Except you forgot one little thing...how is an all-holy God going to live with Jews forever if they are not trusting for their sin to be covered by the blood of Christ? If they acknowledge not the blood the Christ as having any worth on their behalf, then John 3:17-18 says they are "already condemned."

I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost - one in purpose possessing different roles and functions which compliment each other.

So, let me get this straight: A unified married couple is also "one in purpose" -- and they, too "possess different roles and functions which compliment" - sic - "each other". Yet, Jesus defines the married couple as one (Matthew 19:6); yet you define God as three? Really?

So the average unified Christian married couple is more "one" than your God? (Does He know that?)

'Cause this married couple is one flesh...one identity (same last name)...often one in worldview & will...etc.

So the creation of God is "more" one and more unified than the Mormon "creator"gods...Imagine that!

“...so therefore, the Jews are automatically saved since they believe in the God of the Old Testament and have invited Him into their hearts.”

You have driven off the Logic Highway, into a ditch and
now you are telling Christians that it was the road’s fault... and that you are not confused now!

“I actually believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MORMON FULL DISCLOSURE: Of course, by “Father” we mean
Heavenly Father, who used to be a sinful man, but worked
his way into being one of the mormon gods, and is now
married to Heavenly Mother and breeds with Her celestially
and ceaselessly to populate the earth. By Son, we mean the
mormon Jesus who was created by Heavenly Father (our
fellow cult the Jehovah’s Witnesses, believe the same thing,
so don’t say we are not mainstream), got a body, married
Mary Magdalene, and later became a mormon god, who is still
married celestially. By Holy Ghost, we don’t mean a real Ghost, or even that Christian Holy Spirit, but yet another
created spirit being. In this case, all we know is that
the Holy Ghost didn’t get a body because He was naughty.
In short, our gods are superior to the one Christian God
because ours all started life as sinful, fallen, created
spirit beings, who later became part of the Great Pantheon
of Mormon Gods, may they all live forever.
Sandy, in John chapter fourteen, Jesus is trying to clear up a confusion in Philip's mind. Jesus tells Philip that He is in The Father and The Father is in Him. If Jesus were The Father then Jesus could not die on the cross for you and for me. Because The Father wass in Him and He in The Father, The Father could withdrawe from 'in Him' so that He could die for you and for me.
Please, Dear One, read what I tried to write explaining this mystery ... it is still a mystery, even to me, but I think the following could help you to see where you're in error:
The One God Evidences Himself in the Work which He is Doing:
The following will be 'a way' to understand the notion of the trinitarian nature of the Deity, not a strictly Biblical explanation, but one which is applicable to the teaching of the Bible. Here goes:
God The Father Almighty is greater than His creation, thus greater than dimension time and dimension space, thus we may think of The Father Almighty as beyond time and space but not prevented from touching and indeed penetrating His creation.
The universe of space and time is likened to a bubble: what is inside the bubble is in time and space. But the nature of what is inside the bubble is only partially understood in modern Physics.
The Bible relates scenes which defy the simplistic notions we use for assumptive science. We'll get to that 'assumptive' notion shortly, but let us make the statement that God The Father Almighty is as comfortable outside the bubble as He is inside the bubble.
Modern Physics has discovered that the balance of forces and tensions sustaining the universe necessary for human life to arise within the universe is extremely delicate, on the order of a mathematical improbability, represented as a 'one in less than' fraction so tiny that a one over a one followed by more than one-hundred zeros defines the probability that the whole thing remains in balance! Such a delicate balancing act is but one of the continuing 'works' of the Holy Spirit of God. It is by the Spirit of God, The Word, that the universe came into existence and it is said in the Bible that by His Spirit the whole is maintained.
But the Bible also states that The Word was with God in the beginning and was God. In John's gospel we find that Jesus is The Word made flesh Who dwelt among us. So, inside the bubble Created by The Father Almighty, sustained by God The Holy Spirit, is the Word, God made flesh Who dwelt among us. The Creator does not stop being greater than His creation bubble, nor does His Spirit cease to sustain it all in balance, when Jesus comes in the flesh to dwell among us.
Here's an address to 'assumptive science limitations': Now, when one reads the Torah/Old Testament, one finds scenes like the fifth chapter of Daniel where a being is in one spacetime 'where/when' reaching into another 'where/when' to write on the palace party central wall of king Belshazzar. Just the forearm/hand is seen in the where/when of Belshazzar and the party folks, the rest of the being remains in 'another' where/when.
God The Father Almighty created this 'other' where/when, His Holy Spirit maintains its balance and separateness from our where/when, and Jesus has moved in and out of this other where/when: as shown when He resurrected from the tomb without rolling away the stone, just passing out of the tomb where/when, into 'another' where/when; then back into our where/when as He spoke to the women come to the sepulchre; and when He appeared in a locked and shuttered room with the disciples present; or appeared suddenly with the disciples walking on a road and broke bread with them then left our where/when to go to the 'other' where/when.
The trinitarian nature of God is shown in the Bible, even in the Torah. Trinity IS the nature of God as we have been given to know. Even in the Old Testament/Torah, we do have instruction on the Three nature of God as Creator, Sustainer, and Deliverer. God Is manifested as three yet one, seen identified by 'the work He is doing'.
With each manifestation, we are given to realize His presence simultaneously as Creator--because we exist in the realm He created, as Sustainer--because the balance is too delicate to stand alone without His sustaining the separation and interdependence, and as God with us in the person of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Just as God is in the world in the person of Jesus The Christ, He is not the world but He is in the world/created universe, and the world/created universe is sustained by His Spirit, and God the Father created ALL that there is or ever shall be because He created time and space and provided the energy and sustains the balance of forces. When The Creator came into space and time, He did so as the person of Jesus Christ. When God came into the created unviverse, His Spirit is not diminished nor is His creative Self as He manifests The Word.
Is Jesus Christ the same as God the Father in the Old Testament? Either you think He is or you think He’s not. If you accept the Trinity as Gospel, then you believe that Jesus Christ is the same divine being Heavenly Father and the Holy Ghost of the Old Testament, in which case the Jews are all “saved” because they believe the Old Testament is the Word of God and have accepted the God of the Old Testament (Jesus Christ/Father/Holy Ghost) in their hearts.
I told you not to tell me the Trinity is a “mystery” - it’s not a mystery to me. I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost - One in purpose having distinct personalities and functions.
Haven't you noticed OO? The mormons think they are the ONLY Christians...that is, since the PR firm sold the leaders on the idea that more convert$ can be gained with the brand name.
That's what the "Great Apostasy" lie is all about. Set aside the Church of Joseph Smith as unique and speshul and the only "twoo" church...and they think they can weasel their way into the Christian community because they say so.
It especially galls me since I sat in the pew and listened with my own ears to put downs of Christianity in favor of the "restored gospel".
I think the democrats have taken a leaf out of the mormon book on deception and history revision.
Okay, Sandy, what part of the essay did you not comprhend? Because it is obvious you don’t get the ‘by the work He is doing’ title and refuse to allow the mental exercise to read John chapter fourteen for the explanation Jesus gave to Philip. So, if you’ll take it step by step, I will be glad to explain the explanation.
Saundra Duffy: “Nice try in changing the subject. Nice try but no cigar.”
___________________
MORMON MEMBER TIPS:
The subject is whatever the OFFICIAL LDS MORG says it is.
All attempts to tell us what the subject is are to be
rejected. Just say, “Nice try changing the subject.” and
then move on. You do not owe anyone an answer. Remember,
they are too ignorant to understand the superior truths
of mormonism.
This tactic is very effective any time you speak of our
created gods, celestial sex, magic underwear (that you
must wear at all times), becoming a god, exactly how many
gods we believe in, the nature of the godhead, etc. Basically,
anything that is not Christian, but actually is because
we say it is.
You can reference smoking in cliches and in quotes, but
do not give the impression we approve of smoking.
Remember, do not engage in actual discussion, since that
would involve thinking and we do not allow independent
thought. As we have commanded, “When the leaders have
spoken, the thinking is done.”
Finally, when they point out that you have no facts,
evidence or logical argument to support mormonism, just
tell them god talks to you all the time and you just
know our “Church” is the correct one.
Yours in obscuring the meat until they join,
High Priest, Screwtape
Actually PD....you make no sense. And I pray and hope your "Dear Reader's" are paying attention....
It is mormonism that claims superiority.
It is mormonism that claims to have "more truth"....
It is mormonism that claims the Bible isn't what it is...
And again I will ask you.....Do you think J. Smith and / or B. Young were/are perfect? Yes or no.
It's an easy question....why won't you answer it?.
Don't you owe an honest answer to "Dear Readers"?
I've seen that with my own eyes.....One the first mormon's I ever knew...bashed Christians. And the other mormon I knew...( A bishop..) called big rocks on his land..."nigger heads"...Those guy's pretty much turned me off of mormonism....when I was a young guy looking for truth. I then became a Christian...and learned more and more about the Truth. And the total deception of mormonism........
