The Doctrine of Temple Work (Mormonism - Open)
Ensign ^ | October 2003 | Elder David E. Sorensen

Posted on 10/26/2010 5:17:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Snip

...Joseph Smith warned of the consequences when we fail to use the temples available to us: “Those Saints who neglect [temple work] in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.”

Snip

A key function of temples is to perform ordinance work for our deceased ancestors. When we think of temple ordinances and the necessity to do them perfectly, without error...

“… For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation...they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect” (D&C 128:5, 15;...).

Consider the...vision of President Joseph F. Smith...:

“Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins...having rejected the prophets.

Snip

The Lord revealed through... Joseph: “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, … through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power … are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead” (D&C 132:7).

Snip

...One of the great privileges we have is the wearing of the garment...

...The garment, … when properly worn, will serve as a protection against temptation and evil.

“It is expected that members will wear the garment both night and day...Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing...The garment should not be removed for activities which might reasonably be done with the garment worn beneath the clothing...

So, if I understand you correctly, you can disagree
PRIVATELY, and as long as you support the Head Prophet
PUBLICALLY, despite your personal beliefs, there is
no retribution?

Can you disagree and make it public?
Can you disagree and work to convince others the existing policy is wrong?

[for example, during the days you discriminated as a Church against blacks, could you have led protests around the SLC Headquarters, demanding a change of policy? What would have happened, had you done this, to your membership and future temple recommend?]

Can you tell others throughout your ward in one to one conversations about your areas of disagreement?

Can you let your Bishop know that you disagree and are starting
an email discussion about the topic?

Can you start a website or forum on a topic that disagrees
with your leadership?

I need clarification.

Thank you,
ampu

PS - not sure what happened to blind Saundra?

Are you kidding? Be honest? On my very first posts about Mormonism on this site, a was castigated, and told that since I didn’t toe the ‘official’ mark, I wasn’t truly Mormon.

It didn’t matter to these judaizers that I was born into the religion and five generations of my family proceeded me, or that my name was still on the official roll.

I remember one very nasty ‘lady’ loudly proclaiming that I wasn’t Mormon at all as long as I went against the official party line.

CC,
You rock and I’m thankful you came to know Christ after
leaving the mormon cult.

I am patiently asking these questions for the sake of
those who lurk and do not know the truth. Saundra CLAIMS
she is totally free to not agree with the leadership of
her new cult. I doubt it... hence, I cc’d you, knowing
you would know.

Thank you!

PS - Summary of mormons: They lie. They lie regulary.
They distort the truth. They avoid the truth. They tell
half truths.

“Can you start a website or forum on a topic that disagrees
with your leadership?”

Why on earth would I want to do that? I agree with my leadership. If I disagree with my leadership, I am free as a bird to move on. I am happy and blessed right where I am.

I am free to get excommunicated if I want to. It’s my choice but I choose to stay and be blessed and happy.

parsing words.... “sustain” as opposed to “agree.”

In a way you are correct, logo. You can disagree as much as you want as long as you don’t do it publicly, openly, or disobediently. You must obey, you must support and sustain, or forfeit your Temple Recommend.

So where does that leave an honest Mormon who disagrees with its tenets? If he speaks out - he loses out. ... Or he learns to keep everything inside and become dishonest to himself and others.

To answer your other questions, I would cite the prophecy of King Benjamin (ca 124 B.C.) in the Book of Mormon....

And I would point out to you the prophecy of Gandalf the Grey from the Book of the Hobbit: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil.”

A much more readable work of fiction BTW than the Book of Mormon.

This made me think of a Mormon who disagrees with, yet sustains his/her superior.

[Shaking head]...I can never understand how the FR mormons expect to convince anyone by posting from Joseph Smith's Fictional Book...

When will you have the assurance that you have eternal life in Christ, as an absolute certainty?

What do you mean by "absolute certainty"? If that means a mental state in which faith and hope are no longer necessary, I doubt that day will come in this life. As Paul wrote,

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans 8:16-18)

The Spirit bears witness that I am a joint-heir with Christ. If I continue to suffer with Him, I will be glorified. I am as certain of that as I can be of anything.

However, I do not yet see the glory that I am to inherit. Until I do, I must wait with hope and patience:

24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. (Romans 8:24, 25)

You response is hallmarked by 'if': " If I continue to suffer with Him, I will be glorified. I am as certain of that as I can be of anything." You have been taught to see Salvation as conditional. That is anathema to what God has said and affirmed. For all of his faults, that is the truth Luther discerned while a priset in the Catholic Church ... so he left the Catholic Church to follow the truth. My salvation is absolute because of God's promise, not because of the life I live in the flesh. You made a nice effort to defelct from what you accurately perceived as the reason for my question to you. I appreciate your giving an answer, but you might have considered what Paul wrote regarding being ever ready to explain the hope that is WHITHIN YOU. Of course, if you have yet to expereince that Hope, in the indwelling presence of Jesus, then I can see why deflection is practiced.

You offer a strawman; not surprising: "If that means a mental state in which faith and hope are no longer necessary ..." First faith is not only necessary, it is THE GIFT OF GOD! I have a mental state that I am assured my Salvation rests not on my ability to prevent loss of redemption, rather I am absolutely mentally certain of Salvation because of God's promise. That is the Faith He places within you when you are born again! ... He is not a man that He should lie. When you are born again, you too will know that surety.

Yes, I was quoting the Apostle Paul, and agreeing with him.

Martin Luther was a great man, but I do not look to him as an authority on salvation.

“I am free to get excommunicated if I want to.”

Hey, it was you, Saundra Duffy, who said she HAD to agree
with her leadership in her old church. It was terribly
oppressive for you.

Not any more, you are a mormon!

As it turns out, you still have to agree, but now they
can take away your mormon salvation!

Oh, the depth of freedom you have now!

Cult. Clearly a cult. Apparently, you are quite confused or
happy to be there, obeying no matter what, to hold onto
mormon heaven.

And so happy! But you misrepresented the truth in your
previous post.

Fiction or not (I say not), the passage I quoted provides a brief and easily understood summary of what I believe about Jesus Christ. Did you bother to read it?

Glorification is only for those already saved. Paul was not talking about being born again in that phrase, he was talking about enduring until the end to receive the rewards for the race he ran. You cannot enter the race on your own merit, Logo. But I can see why that is confusing for you.

If you found the same passage in the novel ‘Moby Dick’ would you then believe Moby Dick is scripture? ... Melville as a much better writer than Smith notwithsatnding.
