PROVO -- A community gathered together Sunday to pay tribute to the historic Provo Tabernacle. The building went up in flames Friday, and it's still unclear if it can be rebuilt.
A grieving community came to the UCCU Events Center at Utah Valley University for a memorial and benefit concert. The Provo Tabernacle has special meaning to everyone who attended, including Gov. Gary Herbert.
"They can't replace the craftsmanship of the pioneers and the memory of all of that, but if they can save the facade and make it a beautiful place to use again, that would be wonderful." -LaDawn Osborn"The downtown experience was one that was exciting for me as a young boy, going down particularly at Christmas time," he said. "The Tabernacle was part of the ambiance that was taking place down there."
The program continued with a slide show of photos of the beloved tabernacle, from its early years to modern day -- even the loss. There were tears but also feelings of hope, reinforced by a photo of a portrait that burned, except the area around the image of Christ.

The tabernacle caught fire early Friday morning and the roof quickly caved in. Provo Mayor John Curtis toured the site Saturday. He went up one of the towers and said the view was devastating.

(Photo by Scott G Winterton, Deseret News) "All I can think was the pictures and video I had seen of World War II," he said. "It truly looked that ravished on the inside of that building."
Almost everything inside the building was destroyed, including hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of personal property. Lex de Azevedo and his Millennium Choral Society were supposed to perform "Gloria: The Life of Christ" at the Tabernacle this weekend.
They rehearsed there on Thursday.
"When we were through rehearsing, it was about 11 p.m.," he said. "I just went out in the audience to take it all in because I was so excited. I thought, this is going to be one of the best concerts we've ever done.'"
The show went on Sunday, only the scenery was a bit different. Donations collected will go to recover costs for the group's lost equipment and instruments.
But they say that's little compared to a building that can't be replaced.
The Provo mayor says the structural integrity of the building still has yet to be determined. Fire investigators say it could be weeks before they know the cause of the fire.
Is this where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir do all of their concerts that we see on tv?
I think it’s a sign that they should renounce the weirdnesses of their founder and become orthodox Christians. I think many Mormons actually want to be orthodox Christians but don’t know where to go.
Being an orthodox Christian doesn’t mean they have to abandon their cultural customs (like their nice Family Home Evening), but it does mean that they have to shake off some of the nutty accretions of 19th century “spiritualism” brought by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. Not to mention the beliefs about Indians arriving in cork submarines.
IBYOPIP ... in before your ‘offending’ post is pulled. Resty runs a tight ship in caucus service.
I’m wondering what the painting depicted before God obliterated the other parts and preserved His ‘likeness’?

This is a post for Mormons. Are you Mormon?
This is an Open Thread, not a Caucus Thread or Devotional Thread.
Someone removed the LDS ping list and LDS Caucus
Sorry but 2011 does not look to promising for the LDS on FR!

Not even an explanation eh? That’s not very nice. And of course it didn’t take long for anti’s to get nasty.
I am very puzzled by this the article has no anit stuff in it and to remove the ping list is also puzzling and no reply as to why!

When did this thread lose it’s caucus status, and why?
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir normally practices at, performs at, and broadcasts from the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, UT. The Provo Tabernacle is about 25 miles south in Provo, UT.
It is a news story about a community event held at a University
And yet people do not believe the story of a bomb being set off to burn/explode the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All the windows in the building were shattered, but the glass covering the tilma (cloak) of St. Juan Diego with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe did not break, nor was the image harmed in any way.
The Provo Tabernacle was one of the oldest LDS buildings in Utah and was burnt down in a fire this month. A concert, which was scheduled in the burnt edifice was held last minute in nearby University hall that is majority LDS. The subject is still LDS based. The TV station that did the report, KSL Television, is also owned by the LDS Church. Further, this was never designated as a Devotional, rather a Caucus.
I’m still not understanding the reason for the removal. What is the purpose of a caucus if not to provide a place for religious groups to discuss like minded issues?
If I am misunderstanding the reason and rules of a caucus, please let me know.
Perhaps you are right.
The title:
Community celebrates Provo Tabernacle with concert, memorial
Was not used and a made up title was used in it’s place.
Titles should not be changed.
We will close the thread and put it under review until the Religion Moderator has a chance to weigh in.
Thank you. Further, the “community event” was a LDS themed concert, by a Mormon composer, about the birth of Christ, called Gloria.
