Some of Jesus’ biggest conflicts with the Pharisees was over tradition. He had nothing good to say about it.
He contradicted their tradition with Scripture, as should be.
Matthew 15:3
He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
Matthew 15:6
he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
Mark 7
1 Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
“’This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
7in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
9And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God) 12then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
Consensus does not make truth.
Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Just because a lot of people believe something, doesn't mean it's right.
Excellent post. Sadly I get caught up in the posts and do not post scripture. This is really the heart of it.
God Bless
If you choose not to read the article then why participate on an ecumenical thread if not to antagonize and debate?
I disagree with a lot of the teaching of the Catholic church. However, to be honest, I just could never get past my negative feelings that I have about the priests.
I feel most priests are people that hide in the church to battle their own demons. They are trusted to give marriage and family counseling, but never could understand the joy and/or challenges of having a family.
Many years ago my fathers friend bought an old seminary. (I think that's what it was called) I was given an after school job to help clean up during the renovations. I won't even tell you the sick things we found hiding in the walls, attic, basement, and floorboards. It will stay with me forever.
However, I will tell you that I must of pulled out hundreds of empty liquor bottles that were found in every nook and cranny in that huge old building. I wouldn't even want to be in the same room with these men, and I sure would never look to them for spiritual advise.
It is obvious you have never known any of these men. The ones I have known have been among the most decent and selfless men I have ever met.

The Church or the Bible
**I feel most priests are people that hide in the church to battle their own demons. They are trusted to give marriage and family counseling, but never could understand the joy and/or challenges of having a family.**
This is an ecumenical thread — no antagonism. Priests are members of families, they know about family life because they grew up in one. Do you have any idea, how many classes they take in philosophy, psychology, theology? They know the Bible, they know what Christ taught about families. They know how to counsel families.
Do you have some personal proof that priests do not have this attribute? Please explain.
Another thing that you are not grasping is that priests receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The Holy Spirit — as Paul says — gives the words because of the Sacrament. Something to ponder on before you speak out against priests again, huh?
Of course Jesus is the Word made flesh. But Sacred Tradition is scriptural:
2 Thessalonians 2:15
2 Timothy 2:2
1 Corinthians 11:2
1 Thessalonians 2:13
Acts 2:2
As I said before, you don’t have to agree with me about points of preference. That’s your prerogative. Do be so good as to understand that you are not the only here who can read or speak. Even more, humility counts. And acting as Our Lord wants us to be. We strive for Holiness, not for cheap shots. I have no problems with us disagreeing. This thread was posted under Ecumenical. The author of the original piece is a former Evangelical, who wrote an interesting response to a number of emails/comments he’d receieved. It was posted here. If you didn’t like the article, that’s fine. I sometimes feel the same way about something I’ve found here. But we keep coming back because this is the best forum of this kind around, period. So let’s keep it civil.
And Hebrews 3: 12 - 14
Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
Heb 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Heb 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

which means what, that you don’t have to stay on the path til the end as long as you made a single decision one day? How are you going to depart if that’s the case?
Jesus did not say excuse me please...or don't be offended when He turned the money changers tables over...He shouted and carried a whip! Yelling...”You will not make my Fathers house a house of thieves”. Some choose to let things pass...others whine and bellyache......Jesus said to "stand".
Wonderful post.
More proof about Holy Tradition and the Bible not containing everything in the last chapter of John and in (I believe) the second letter of John.
In both cases St. John states that there is too much to be written down, and thus will be passed on orally.
Many people think that tradition means the way Catholics act or rituals or the Old Testament laws and rituals.....that’s not it. It’s that God’s message is passed on from one person to another — in the times of the Gospel writers as well as today 00 one person to another through oral communication.
GOD’S WORD REIGNS - JESUS IS THE WORD!
It’s ALL ABOUT JESUS!
Which is why you don’t have an answer? Because you cannot understand? Thanks for admitting that.
