Michigan Sikhs Want Religious Swords in School

Members of a Michigan Sikh community are upset after a student was banned from bringing a religious sword to a public school.

The incident occurred at Bentley Elementary School in Canton when a fourth grader was caught wearing a small saber underneath his clothing, reports MyFoxDetroit.com.

The sabre, called a Kirpan, symbolizes Sikhs' efforts to ward off evils and followers say it poses no danger to the community. Any person who has been baptized into the faith -- the world’s fifth largest religion -- is expected to carry the saber all the time.

“It’s a religious symbol,” Sikh leader Teikiran Singh told WJBK-TV, disputing the notion that it was a weapon.

“It just reminds you of your spirituality. It’s a fight against your internal evils.”

The saber was discovered after an unidentified Sikh student and another student were reportedly roughhousing on the playground. The principal initially allowed the child to keep the sword but the Plymouth-Canton School District later determined the religious symbol resembled a weapon and was officially banned.

“Every kid has a pair of scissors, a pencil.”

Yeah well it would take quite a few whacks to separate a another kids head from their shoulders with a pair of scissors or a pencil...

Typically, the ‘swords,’ which are more the size of a knife, are welded into their scabbards so that they cannot be drawn. They’re allowed to be carried into federal buildings, etc, like that. It’s carried as a reminder of their obligation to God to do justice.

2 thoughts:

1. Kids used to brings guns to school all the time for after-school hunting, target practice (sometimes on a school club), etc. So what's the big deal?

2. Let the Sikh kid carry a plastic/toy saber, if it is purely symbolic.

These people don’t get it. The public schools don’t want “evils” warded off.

“But Singh stressed that no one is in danger. “Equal damage could be done with a fork or with a butter knife,” he said. ”

Or a box-cutter...

Oh, so the islamic kid who brings swords to school is merely asked to leave them at home but his non-muslim classmate who forgets there’s a butter knife locked in his trunk gets a criminal record and is expelled for the rest of the year.

When cross necklaces are being banned from schools, I don’t think a knife has any place being in school! When a cross on a hill that has been there for decades is torn down or not allowed by courts, how can anyone justify this symbol being ok in a school?

Well they've gotta carry something to protect themselves from the GD Muslims that have multiplied like plague rats in MI.

Sikhs have centuries of experience dealing with Muslims.

Blades have been needed in all of those centuries.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

My bad. However, change my post to “sikhs” and it’s still the same.

Sikhs are not muslims. Not even close. They have been fighting against the muslims (violently) for hundreds of years.

Meanwhile, a plastic dinnerware knife in the trunk of a car will get a non-minority student expelled.

Oh, I quite agree. My point is that we used to have a lot more freedom and weren’t so uptight about so many things.

It has been a pleasure to have known several Sikhs during my life. You would never find more honest and honorable people anywhere. So if the kids want to carry their ceremonial daggers,I really don't see a problem.

Siukhs are not Moslems...

they hate each other...

Once India was one country with both religions...

Now there is Pakistan where most of the Islamics moved to...

and India was left with mostly Hindus and Sikhs...

It is the Hindus who have the caste system, the cow worship and the awful poverty......
