Religion just got re-injected into the presidential race thanks to new ads from Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. But really, it never left.
New polls in Iowa suggest Romneys Mormon religion continues to be a sticking point among all-important evangelical Christians there. And thats bad news for a Romney campaign that is trying desperately to prevent Newt Gingrich from scoring a big victory in the states caucuses.
A new CNN/Time poll out Wednesday showed Romney trailing Gingrich 33 percent to 20 percent in the Hawkeye State. A look at the crosstabs suggests religion is a big reason why.
Gingrich takes 31 percent of the self-described born-again Christian vote, which is pretty much in line with his overall vote total. Romney, though, takes just 13 percent of born-agains, and actually gets twice as much support 26 percent from the rest of the electorate.
Of all the different groups in the poll (old, young, rich, poor, men, women, etc.), none gives Romney a lower share of the vote than born-again Christians.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll from early this week showed something similar, with Romney taking 14 percent of self-described evangelicals and 21 percent of everyone else.
No other candidate showed such a deficit among evangelicals, and it was all to Gingrichs benefit; he took 39 percent of evangelicals and 29 percent of non-evangelicals.
If Gingrich can rally the support of evangelicals and not lose their votes to the two more evangelical-friendly candidates in the field Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) hes got a great chance to bring home a victory. Thats a big pool of voters (half or more) that has shown itself to be pretty resistant to Romney.
SNIP
In the 2008 caucuses, he took 19 percent of evangelicals despite taking 25 percent of...overall vote.

Some FREEPERS may want to jump on CNN for even asking this as a poll question, perhaps because they'd like to keep "religion" hermetically sealed from "politics"...and ne'er the 'twain shall meet.
Yet the extremely liberal Washington Post pours their worldview into the headline -- calling "religion" an "ugly head"...meaning it believes "religion" needs to bury their head and keep it buried.
Imagine that. The very liberal Washington Post and the small-but-focused chorus of "let's-keep-religion-out-of-analyzing Romney" voices we hear around here all arrive at the same conclusion: Religion doesn't belong in the Public Square.
From the article: New polls in Iowa suggest Romneys Mormon religion continues to be a sticking point among all-important evangelical Christians there. Well imagine that. We keep hearing from the "keep-religion-out-of-it" preachers; yet the Evangelicals in Iowa holding an opposite vantage point are the very ones pre-empting the Romney gates from opening wider!
I guess some Evangelicals have trouble voting for a candidate who believes he will be a god of his own world and is supposedly already a "god-in-embryo."
“Mormon question rears its ugly head in Iowa”
Given that mormonism is a perversion of the Gospel of Christ and makes God an idol, I think this title is appropriate.
Wherever heresies surface, they result in ugliness instead of beauty, self-worthiness instead of undeserved merit, and
making God as a creature instead of the Creator.
It is entirely appropriate for those who care deeply about these things to be aware of what a candidate believes.
His religion means nothing to me. I won’t vote for him because he is a liberal. That is all.
Is Romney’s religion responsible for his lying?
For his support of murderer-freeing judges?
For his coverup of the BIG DIG?
For his imposition of RomneyCARE?
For his imposition to the Clerks of RomneyMarriage?
Few of these ‘people’ practice doing what’s right for the USA. Their religious affiliation means little, with the possible exception of exhibit A: Oh Bummer, who bows to every country in the world, apologizes for America’s might, and gives special consideration to the Islamists everywhere.
New tagline.
The Mormon religion is a chameleon religion.
You believe in God? (Oh, we believe in God, too) [They actually believe in gods plural]
You're a Christian? (We are, too) [They actually believe Christians are "apostates" and want nothing to do with us other than nab and grab a popular brand image]
Oh, you're against racism. [Well, 15-20 years' reacting after the rest of the country, we'll start addressing our racism, too]
See other examples below...like when Salt Lake City wanted to start embracing homosexual values as a city. The Mormon church "OK'd" it.
The Mormon church can be liberal when it wants to...and it's been awfully convenient for that to happen more and more the last few years.
Examples:
* Homosexual rights: Mormon church supports Salt Lake City's protections for gay rights and Mormons Back Salt Lake City Gay Rights Laws
* Illegal alien liberal policy nuances... note these headlines & stories:
* 2 LDS branch presidents in Utah deported to Guatemala, El Salvador
* A Utah think tank this year had a headline: Considering The Disconnect Between Some LDS Church Members and Leadership on Immigration
Abortion: The official Mormon church position (see
http://www.religioustolerance.org/lds_abor.htm) is that it's "OK" for an abortion if...
(a) Incest needs to be covered up;
(b) The baby is disabled and needs to be destroyed accordingly
(c) Mom's "health" (whatever that means...distinct from saying "life" of the mother)
(d) If the abortionist says it's "OK"
(e) If the Mormon god says it's "OK" in prayer...
E alone above could "justify" abortion to individual Mormons as long it overrides the person's conscience!
And if you need further evidence of just how liberal the Mormon church leadership can be when it wants to be, then look at how Harry Reid was welcomed with such warm open arms by an all BYU student & faculty occasion for Reid to speak there: Reid gets warm reception at BYU
Too many of you FREEPERS somehow think that Romney's wishy-washiness is "unconnected" to his faith. Well, the Mormon leadership has shown it can be morally wishy-washy whenever it's "convenient" [banning polygamy is yet another example].
It was "convenient" for the Mormon church leadership to pass homosexual rights for Salt Lake City 'cause they were coming off of what the MSM regarded "negative" media play re: Prop 8 in CA.
It was "convenient" for their missionary program to support aspects of immigrants being here illegally.
And, at times, it's been "convenient" for daughters of Mormon leaders and others to get abortions.
Certainly, it's been "convenient" for them to have a Harry Reid in Congress "watch out" for Mormon church interests.
Historically, it was "convenient" for the Mormon god to change his mind about skin color...even if he didn't change Mormon racist "sacred book" passages depicting open racism. And it was "convenient" for the Mormon church to slowly rid itself of open polygamy because their church was threatened, their menfolk were in jail, and they wanted statehood. Even then, it was "convenient" for their original leader, Joseph Smith, to engage in sex with many women even though his own penned Book of Mormon called polygamy an "abomination."

On some occasions, and in the midst of tense ideological arguments, getting to the bottom-line truths may prove hard-hitting and uncomfortable....
Telling the truth...
Advocating for the truth...
--AND---
Defending the truth...
....is NEVER.... "raising its ugly head"

The simplest of objective comparative studies tells us:
Mormonism is a quite-twisted theology /soteriology...
...It is NOT Biblical Christianity -- not even close.
Joseph Smith... if he was "inspired" at all...
....was manifesting & advocating the doctrines of demons.
The Mormon "prophets" are trusting in a false version of "god"....
..and taught to hope they will each become "gods" in the afterlife...
Mormons are preaching "another gospel"...
[salvation by works]
Mormons are preaching "another Jesus"...

Everyone has the franchise to decide for themsleves and cast their own ballot....
Lest he openly repents...
Romney will NOT get my vote for the Republican nomination for POTUS...
His deception by Mormonism is the main reason for my decision.
The Mormon thing was a problem in 2008 and its a problem this year. It was always going to be a problem.
Seems to me that Mormons practice their own version of “Taqqiya.”
Tough living in the Southern state - the next President is likely to be a Catholic, a Mormon, or a guy they think is a black Muslim from Africa. Maybe it’s the end times or something.
Why all this attention on Romney...isn’t their beloved Harry Reid a Mormon as well? Hypocrites!

Your post is one of the most articulate and well thought out responses to the mormon heresy that I have encountered at FR. All I can add is what do we do if our choice for POTUS comes down to a mormon and a muslim? I may stay home and load pmags.
This is just a rain drop in a swimming pool (in comparison) to what the LSM will report about Moot’s “religion” if he’s the nominee. They know how much it will make for great TV (i.e., advertising dollars) and also serve to get the current lOser another 4 years.
Don't ask questions about his faith in a deceptive cult, he's only running to be President of the United States after all. Oh look, he has pretty hair!
Yes to all of those.
Thank you br’er in Christ. I will vote the rest of the ticket or third party or go fishing...
You maybe correct however for Romney he is lds right down the line. He is considered “temple worthy”, which means he is part of the 15% of lds (only 15% are onsidered worthy enough) who are allowed into the inner circle. He must follow all the rules. As a side note Harry Reid and Jon Huntsman are also “temple worthy”.
“bad news for a Romney campaign that is trying desperately to prevent Newt Gingrich from scoring a big victory in the states caucuses. “
Many of the same folks who dislike/hate Mormons also dislike/hate Catholics. For example, Rick Perry’s pastor believes that Mormons are going to hell along with the Catholics and Jews.
“ugly head” is very fitting in this context.
“Of all the different groups in the poll (old, young, rich, poor, men, women, etc.), none gives Romney a lower share of the vote than born-again Christians.”
What I can’t figure out is if these folks are so “born-again” then why on earth would they run to Gingrich? The perfect candidate for them would be Rick Perry whose pastor says all the Mormons are going to hell along with the Catholics and Jews and Perry’s pastor says he speaks for evangelical Southern Baptists - a huge chunk of the votes.
I hate to say it but these people are a bunch of hypocrites! (Actually I don’t hate to say it.)
