WASHINGTON — Taking direct aim at libertarian policies promoted by many American conservatives, the Honduran cardinal who is one of Pope Francis’ top advisers said Tuesday (June 3) that today’s free market system is “a new idol” that is increasing inequality and excluding the poor.

Good... how about letting Christ do it instead of “an organization”?

European was developing capitalism way before the Protestant Reformation. One can cite such developments as double entry bookkeeping, letters of exchange and other forms of credit, modern banking, for example, the Medici and Fuggers. The most capitalistic place in Europe could of be Northern Italy and the remained Catholic post-Reformation.

Argentina might be a warning of what capitalism sans faith will look like.

Capitalism can live arm in arm with faith and private charity. That way we can affirm that the worker is worth his wages, and that we put our hope in the fullness of God, and that we carry out His works of love and mercy. These principles are in tension but not bluntly contradictory. Without an orderly market, how do you hope to have something to help the poor with?

Whether or not they want to admit it, the various segments of the church have proved God’s opportunities for influencing the other segments to the good. Splits grieve God, but they don’t stop His plan. He already planned for this situation.

he said, solidarity with the poor, as envisioned by Catholic social teaching, calls for “dealing with the structural causes of poverty and injustice.”

Quite correct - and those causes are the shackling of the creative potential of the world's people by statism.

This is a fruits vs. roots issue. Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Ford etc showed what capitalism can do.

Funny no criticism of libertarian social policy.

I know. When I saw the headline I assumed that was the argument that he was going to make. But if all he talked about was the fiscal angle - he's basically showing that he's a closet commie (or not so closeted), and he believes Big Government should exist to confiscate and redistribute wealth. In other words he wants to turn Big Government into a god.

Not that it matters much, but he is from Argentina, not Venezuela.

I cringed when I heard Jesuit and Argentina. I hoped I was wrong, but history serves.

Christ wasn’t diddling little boys, so I agree he is better qualified.

As a Catholic, I always feel very lucky that nothing the Pope says in this area can ever be considered infallible, because, IMHO, it’s always very fallible.

Statist-coerced - as opposed to private-charitable - redistribution of wealth is a Catholic ideal?

‘Passing the trash’

Too often, problem teachers are allowed to leave quietly. That can mean future abuse for another student and another school district.

“They might deal with it internally, suspending the person or having the person move on. So their license is never investigated,” says Charol Shakeshaft, a leading expert in teacher sex abuse who heads the educational leadership department at Virginia Commonwealth University.

It’s a dynamic so common it has its own nicknames—“passing the trash” or the “mobile molester.”

Laws in several states require that even an allegation of sexual misconduct be reported to the state departments that oversee teacher licenses. But there’s no consistent enforcement, so such laws are easy to ignore.

School officials fear public embarrassment as much as the perpetrators do, Shakeshaft says. They want to avoid the fallout from going up against a popular teacher. They also don’t want to get sued by teachers or victims, and they don’t want to face a challenge from a strong union.

I’m not Catholic and I’m not libertarian. But what the Cardinal is talking about here is neither Catholic NOR libertarian.

He is just parrotting the Pope’s redistrubtion message which - as I say - is not a true Catholic or libertarian agenda.

It Socialism. And the muckety-mucks in Rome had better shut up.

It may be incompatible with libertarians, but obviously not Socialism, other wise why would 52 percent of them vote for Obama?

There are to points that make me beware of libertarians, that is their view that the Government should not interfere with gay marriage and that a woman has the right to do what she wants with her body.

I believe any one should have the right to do what they want with their body but not another body, which is the baby.

I have no problem with the rest of the libertarian view that I am familiar with.
