Relating to the bread & the wine...

Jesus said, ‘this is my blood, this is my body’. I tell you both to accept what Jesus said. It does not become, nor does it represent...IT IS!

Adoro Te Devote - Hidden God

“Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore; masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more.” The text to this hymn of thanksgiving and adoration belongs to St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), and its most famous English translation to Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889). The chant itself is of unknown origin from the first millennium. It is brighter and lighter than many chants, with a smooth and lyrical line of four easy phrases, with a swell in the third phrase that provides quiet drama while never losing its discipline.

Aquinas is said to have written this text at the request of Pope Urban IV for the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264. This chant is often used as a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass, though it is suitable for any time of focus on the Blessed Sacrament. The Hopkins translation is beautiful; consider the last line of the third verse: “Truth himself speaks truly or there’s nothing true.” But it cannot compare to the lyric quality of Aquinas’s Latin: “Nil hoc verbo veritatis verius.”

Adoro te devote, latens Deitas, Que sub his figuris vere latitas:
Hidden God, devoutly I adore Thee, Truly present underneath these veils:

Tibi se cor meum totum subjicit, Quia te contemplans, totum deficit.
All my heart subdues itself before Thee, Since it all before Thee faints and fails.

Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur, Sed auditu solo tuto creditur:
Not to sight, or taste, or touch be credit, Hearing only do we trust secure;

Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius, Nil hoc verbo Veritatis verius.
I believe, for God the Son hath said it— Word of Truth that ever shall endure.

In cruce latebat sola Deitas, At hic latet simul et humanitas:
On the Cross was veiled Thy Godhead’s splendor, Here Thy manhood lieth hidden too;

Ambo tamen credens, atque confitens, Peto quod petivit latro poenitens.
Unto both alike my faith I render, And, as sued the contrite thief, I sue.

Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor, Deum tamen meum te confiteor:
Though I look not on Thy wounds with Thomas, Thee, my Lord, and Thee, my God, I call:

Fac me tibi semper magis credere, In te spem habere, te diligere.
Make me more and more believe Thy promise, Hope in Thee, and love Thee over all.

O memoriale mortis Domini, Panis vivus vitam praestans homini:
O Memorial of my Saviour dying, Living Bread that givest life to man;

Praesta meae menti de te vivere, Et te illi semper dulce sapere.
May my soul, its life from Thee supplying, Taste Thy sweetness, as on earth it can.

Pie pellicane, Jesu domine, Me immundum munda tuo sanguine:
Deign, O Jesus, pelican* of heaven, Me, a sinner, in Thy Blood to lave,

Cujus una stilla salvum facere Totum mundum quit ab omni scelere.

To a single drop of which is given All the world from all its sin to save.
Jesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio, Oro, fiat illud, quod tam sitio:
Contemplating Lord, Thy hidden presence, Grant me what I thirst for and implore,

Ut te revelata cernens facie, Visu sim beatus tuae gloriae. Amen.
In the revelation of Thine essence to behold Thy glory evermore.

“Besides if a priest could put Jesus in a cracker he could also do any thing else like defeating the Satanist by just thinking a thought.”

The miracle of transubstantiation is wrought by God, acting through the agency of the priest.

Well, thank you, I suppose. But, the question remains: how was the returned wafer verified or validated? There isn’t any way of knowing, apparently.

“I will stand with my brothers.”

Speaking for myself, thank you.

That’s a fair question. Do you reject all mysticism?

I reject relying upon the word of Satanists regarding the return of an object your church regards as being the body of Christ, whether or not I believe in transubstantiation (and I do not).

Can I infer, then, that you reject all Christian mysticism?

No, that would be an inaccurate inference.

Well, then, while I share your misgivings, it remains possible that through the Grace of God some person might discern the truth of the matter.

Besides, the guy sounds like an idiot. He might very well be too dim to attempt such a stratagem.

Trusting a party that is the intentional antithesis of all one believes is not a good stratagem.

True. For the nonce, I’m going to wait for more information.

If a person says: “I believe ONLY what the Bible says; everything else is man-made doctrine” he is contradicting himself, because the doctrine that the Bible teaches EVERYTHING that a Christian needs to believe is not in the Bible, and is therefore a man-made doctrine.

It's puzzling how some people actually think Jesus is held captive in a piece of cracker made from flour and water which had a priest pray over it. They work themselves into a frenzy over the very thought that Jesus may be mistreated, mocked or denigrated as if He had no power to extricate Himself from the thing! Jesus was able to bodily slip right through a crowd of angry religious leaders bent on killing him, I hardly think this would be a problem for Him. I don't condone mocking people's dearly held beliefs but, c’mon, isn't this taking things a little too far?

I agree. I don't doubt the rise they get out of Catholics is the main reason they even publicize what they are planning to do. I'd say, don't play their game. Let these demon worshipers know that there is NOTHING they can do to Christ - HE IS LORD - and their antics are foolish and childish. One day, every single one of them will bow their knees and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God!

Is Jesus powerless to extricate Himself from the consecrated host in the case of evil intent? Is he trapped in there subject to whatever humiliation they had planned for Him? Think this through.

It does not “become” the body and blood of Christ? You mean the bread and wine were always the body and blood of Christ, before he said they were?

“At least the Sacrament was returned.”

The reactions on this forum are telling. People would rather deride a sacrament of the Catholic Church than condemn satanists.

Prayers up to stop any form of satanic worship with or without the Host. Our job is half done right now. The Host is returned. Now to stop praise and worship of that creature.

All for Jesus.
