The problem involved here is this: Catholics believe “born again” is a process wheras protestants believe it is an event. The truth is it can be both. It can be an event which leads to the process of salvation. or it can be a process that leads to the factual “event” of salvation. One is not exclusive of the other.

Mathew 3:11
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Some probably are, some undoubtedly are not.

so those who are dying who then confess Jesus as their Lord, repent of ther sins are not saved since they’ve never been baptised???

Does anybody actually think Jesus would turn such a soul away?

Salvation includes sanctification - the process by which we are separated from the world. To be saved involves both justification and sanctification.

We are saved out the the world - “Save yourselves from this crooked generation”, to use Peter’s own words - by water baptism, just as Noah was saved from a wicked generation by the waters of the Flood.

“That’s not simply an analogy.”

“...in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience...”

Baptism with water corresponds to the baptism of the Flood, so to speak. Just as the Flood separated Noah from the evil around him, so does water baptism save us by “an appeal to God for [not from a good conscience, bot FOR one] a good conscience”. The waters of the flood did not give Noah life, but it did rescue him from the evil world...

Baptism was a well known concept to the Jews. It was a ritual washing for a convert to Judaism, giving a public witness of the changed life that had already begun. It was a dedication to a new way of living, not something that gave new life itself. See http://www.jewsforjesus.org/publications/issues/v02-n10/baptism

For an Evangelical, becoming "born again" often happens like this: He goes to a crusade or a revival where a minister delivers a sermon telling him of his need to be "born again."

"If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and believe he died for your sins, you’ll be born again!" says the preacher. So the gentleman makes "a decision for Christ" and at the altar call goes forward to be led in "the sinner’s prayer" by the minister. Then the minister tells all who prayed the sinner’s prayer that they have been saved—"born again." But is the minister right? Not according to the Bible.

That Catholics writer clearly has no concept of what being born again is, means, results in, or Evangelical's understanding of the new birth.

Nice try for another hit piece on Christianity, but it's a fail from the get go.

for over 1,600 years Catholics considered themselves born again....then along came dissidents who decided to reinterpret what the true church had taught for centuries....thanks, but no thanks.

Protestants misunderstand both 1 Peter and John 3. The movement called “the New Perspective on Paul” (which is not just about Paul) makes this clear.

Some probably are. Many probably are not.

Just like in any other denomination.

The only variable is the percentages from church to church and denomination to denomination.

Baptism was well known to Jews - as a sign of repentance. But Luke makes it clear that it is for the cleansing of sins.
Acts 22:16

Such a scenario IS a baptism. It is baptism by desire, rather than baptism by water.

Wow. That is what you mean by labeling a thread ecumenical?.

There seems to be a complaint over the label. Is it in error?

Any Catholic who believes in Jesus Christ is born again, and any Protestant who does not believe in Jesus Christ is not born again.

And vice versa.

Calling any group of Freepers “haters” is antagonistic. Your post will be removed to keep the “ecumenical” tag.

Gospel Mt 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
