SALT LAKE CITY A new church essay reveals Mormon church founder Joseph Smith had an underage bride and was married to other men's wives during the early days of the faith when polygamy was practiced.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says most of Smith's wives were adults, but one was a 14-year-old girl who was the daughter of Smith's close friends. Research shows the marriage might not have involved sex.

Note the use of the word “virgins”...
I seriously doubt that all but the young teenage daughters of his followers met that criteria...
IOW, he was committing adultery.
More then one bride is interesting but teen? Big whoop.
13 yrs old get married still today, that is not the common, not sure why you appear to want it to be.
I never said or suggested it should be I was just pointing out that it used to be met with a shrug.
Polygamy in general is not the issue it the mormonism practice that we are talking about
So you don't care about polygamy only about what Mormons do. Got it.
Polygamy in general is not the issue it the mormonism practice that we are talking about, as the SLC lds leaders deny its existence and yet is still practiced today.
It's to bad you didn't quote the entire statement, as in total context.
This is the salient part: as the SLC lds leaders deny its existence and yet is still practiced today.
Pedophilia refers to sexual attraction to a pre-adolescent.
Up until the late 20'th century, 14 was a legal marrying age in many states (with parental permission). Even today, in most states kids can marry at 16 with parental consent, and some states (NH and Mass) still allow marriage at 14 (with parental consent and court approval)
You appear to really be twisting yourself into knots to give the pedophile prophet an excuse.....for his perversion because they don’t meet the legal definition.
Hey, of course maybe you didn’t really mean what you wrote, sometimes that happens.
As a side note, what the marring age has zero baring on the fact the JS was marrying (by force in some cases) 14 year old girls, their mothers who were still married, and dozen others.
JS was a pedophile, adulterer, practiced polygamy and polyandry.
Now Mohammad, who had sex with his 9 year old bride, definitely WAS a pedophile, per the standard definition.
If the AVERAGE was 18, that means that a large percentage of marriages were to under-18's. Particularly in order to average out marriages where the woman was in her thirties, 40's, or later.
Good grief.
It must be uncomfortable for you in your apparent state-twisted in knots.
I don't consider myself to be the one "twisted in knots". I was just correcting a false statement. I've now said what I had to say on this thread. Carry on.
John 3:16 ruled. Mormon pass but they don’t know it. Ha
and what I said had any bearing on legality?
Vile child molesters
sigh
Joseph Smith was a pedophile, adulter, polygamist and practice polyandry.
What I find interesting is your defence.
It must be hard to be you who are apparently twisted in defence if these vile practices
Do you find it interesting even unsettleing the defence of pedophilas? By some people?
I’m not defending anything. Smith was likely a vile and unpleasant person. I’m not disputing that. I’m just saying that the definition of the word “pedophile” involves sexual attraction to pre-adolescents. 14 and up is post adolescent.
I’m also saying that, up until fairly recently,it was not unusual for a girl to marry in her early teens. In my readings about the likely age of Mary, mother of Jesus, marrying Joseph, she was likely in her early teens, as that was the accepted age for girls to marry at the time.
And with that, I’m going to bed. You can content yourselves with reviling me for trying to tell you the truth.
it doesn’t make it any less vile and horrible
yes
No it does not. I pull those when I see them.
I am only speaking to the Religion Forum.
Or -- are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Those must have gotten by/escaped notice.
