It’s Official: Mormon Founder Had Up to 40 Wives
NY Times ^ | November 10, 2014 | Laurie Goodstein

Mormon leaders have acknowledged for the first time that the church’s founder and prophet, Joseph Smith, portrayed in church materials as a loyal partner to his loving spouse Emma, took as many as 40 wives, some already married and one only 14 years old.

The church’s disclosures, in a series of essays online, are part of an effort to be transparent about its history at a time when church members are increasingly encountering disturbing claims about the faith on the Internet. Many Mormons, especially those with polygamous ancestors, say they were well aware that Smith’s successor, Brigham Young, practiced polygamy when he led the flock in Salt Lake City. But they did not know the full truth about Smith.

I still want to know if the ‘two gods in the forest’ Smith claimed as the first (through fifth vision version) were imagined, the result of ‘sacred mushrooms’, or planetary aliens). Smith’s ‘religion’ is one of the most successful scams in human History, IMHO.

How many prophets were there?

How many testimonies?

How many covenants?

How many visitations?

How many testaments?

How many revisions?

I was under the impression that this was already well known.

If there was a cover up, it wasn't very successful.

“Mohammed”

Even under sharia you can only have up to 4 wives.

They still apply multiple layers of whitewash in these ‘essays’.

Just in case Mitt Romney is is even daydreaming about a 2016 run, NYT has to put the ‘radicalism’ of Mormons back in the spotlight...

Anything that keeps Mitt Romney, the Progressive Liberal who supports Abortion and the Gay Agenda, on the sidelines, I count as the Providence of God!

“But honestly.. if they just spent 5 minutes researching the origins of their religion, they would know almost instantly it’s a complete and utter crock.”

“Credo, quia absurdum” comes to mind.

Addendum to my post 47.

Careful about asking for a miracle to justify your faith, for such requests assume more importance than you may be able to justify.

Faith is just that - faith.

A case can be made that attempting to justify faith destroys or severely distorts it.

YMMV.

Mormon = Muslim: Both started by horny men that wanted sex with multiple women and children. There is nothing religious about it.

Polygamy is going to be the next big push now that the queers have their government-stamped civil unions that they call “marriage.”

Religiosity itself IS cognitive dissonance. It utterly defines it.

I think you are on the wrong website, FRiend.

Your next door neighbor who isn’t religious, yet maintains a cleaner, healthier life than you (in many respects)? I know you’re capable of being brutal, but can you be brutally honest? As someone who’s not religious, I can see the hatred. It always starts with people like you.

Definitely zot bait here.

As I said earlier, you are on the wrong website.

Sure, there are people who claim to be Christian and don't live up to their own Lord's command to "love their neighbor as themselves". But saying all Christians have "hatred" and "cognitive dissonance" and are bad neighbors?

ZOT BAIT.

Nope, not what I'm saying at all. In fact, I have another VERY religious neighbor who comes over often, simply to talk about faith. He is a kind, generous, loving man, and the door is always open for him. And when he offers a prayer for my family I thank him.

He only wants to spread the gospel, and never talks ill of others. Ever. He wants to BUILD something good, not tear things down. See the difference, FRiend?

I disagree on two counts.

No 1 Religion is a ritual and something Christians should not even have a part in.

No 2 it was started long before Mormons or Muslims even existed.

That is uncalled for.

And prohibited on the "religion" forum of FR. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the guidelines here.

You don't say.
