Pope on Charlie Hebdo: There are limits to freedom of expression when faith is insulted
Fox News ^ | January 15, 2015 | AP

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Pope Francis said Thursday there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith.[...]

"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."[...]

"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said. "They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit."

Burning at the stake and torture for those who disagree with Rome, has historically been Rome’s stock and trade, which this Marxist Pope is chief representative of. Now he tells us Islamic terrorists shouldn’t be insulted. Go figure.

"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,"

Is this the new interpretation of "Turn the other cheek"?

His major malfunction is that he cannot recognize what is an “outside issue” as related to his primary purpose.

The most sane and rational post on the subject I’ve seen in awhile.

Yeah, I *can* say provoking things and yes, in this country no matter what I say (outside, perhaps of threats) you (the rhetorical ‘you’) have no right to respond with violence should you do so you will be sued and/or prosecuted. But if I insult your mother, or God, etc, I’d best be prepared for a punch in the face anyway, along with the possibility that a jury just might not see things my way.

600 years or so ago, insulting the Church in Europe would have ended up every bit as badly for me as pissing on the kaaba.

This is outrageous.

I had to click on the link because I thought it was an onion article.

There are at least a dozen New Testament scriptures that directly contradict this.

Where is turning the cheek?

This pope gets worse and worse every week.

Wonder how the libs will react now to their newly-favorite Pope. Sure, don’t insult Islam, but does that mean no more bashing the Catholic Church???

>> He was mistranslated again...

Yes. What the pope REALLY said is “Je Suis Mohammed”.

Or maybe “Je T’aime Mohammed”.

DA Pope’s a poop.

Bring back the early Templar Knights, they knew how to fight for the Holy Land and rid it of Muslim invaders.

I’m sure there’s a freeper gathering himself to come on here and tell us what he really meant and how reasonable it really is...

OK, I'll give it a shot...When you bait the bear, don't be surprised when he bites you. When you yell "nigger" in the 'hood, don't expect to escape a beatdown. When you insult the "prophet" (pi$$ be upon him), be armed and on guard 24-7.

And when you insult believers in Jesus' Salvation, expect them to pray that your heart be changed and your soul saved.

The article is worth reading. Onvce again the refined Jesuit is over-intellectualizing. In so doing he leaves out a fine teaching moment.
Jesus rebuked his tormentors by pointing out their hypocrisy. He did not pop anyone on the nose for insulting his mother.
In a free society there should be rare limits to free speech. I will contest in the marketplace the greatest detractors of my faith. If they choose to assault me bodily I will claim victory over their beliefs. If the pope pops me on the nose he is the loser.

Roman Catholics insult my faith in Jesus all the time, because I am a “YOPIOS Evangelical Protestant.”

I’m glad their Pope is telling them to stop their insults.

Actually neither of those concepts are to be found in the Gospels or Epistles.

But they are in our Constitution and in the laws of free, democratic countries around the globe. We are not governed by the Pope and ecclesiastical ordinances. And who should decide what the limits to freedom of expression are when faith is insulted? And what should the penalties be? And who should administer them?

The Pope's stupid statement helps to justify the actions of these killers who were killing in the name of faith and as retribution for insulting "the Prophet." Faith should not be insulated from ridicule and mockery. Charlie Hebdo bears no fault for what happened to their staff.

The Pope's ill-conceived remarks invite self-censorship, the worst censorship of all. He should be more concerned about the mass religious cleansing now underway in the Middle East and elsewhere. Tens of thousands of Christians are being killed and forced to flee their homes to escape the wrath of radical Islam. Equating that with "insulting" cartoons of Mohammed is a cruel joke.

Why does the phrase "fighting words" come to mind?

“You cannot insult the faith of others.”

Hmm, are you sure about that?

“But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.” 1 Cor. 10:20

“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” Matt. 6:7

There’s a difference between reasonably expecting an evil response to a disturbing action, and expecting an evil response is reasonable thereto. As someone who is expected to act & speak in strict accordance with his doctrine & dogma, I’m quite surprised he’s practically condoning violence in response to a petty insult.

Didn’t Christ say something about “turn the other cheek”? How Christian is this guy who claims to lead all Christians?

Right and that’s the direct and most crude assault on Christians (and Muslims).

However in the US, ALL media has been conducting a full court press on Christianity for decades...demeaning Christianity to the exclusion of all other faiths.

Every character in film, tv, etc. who the director wants you to perceive as backward, stupid, bigoted or mentally deranged, is presented and made to appear as a practicing Christian.

It’s insidious but constant and childishly predictable.

By now, there is a tremendous amount of programming that is impossible for me to watch, and I’m NOT even that much of a church goer.

It’s just SUCH bad media and SUCH an intellectually lazy, needlessly literal piling-on to express what we already know to be a pathologically inimical message.

I am certain ONLY the most inexpert and low IQ media types would write and produce material so blatantly subjective. Where is the ‘genius’ or skill in gratuitously reiterating, by now, entrenched hate, bias and prejudice?

It’s as if some neo-Nazi propagandist taught these people about journalism and media.

Maybe it’s just me, with my expectation of originality in entertainment, media, etc.

If I want propaganda, I know where to look. If I want entertainment, media, etc. which makes a contribution to the culture of the US, then it won’t be TV, magazines or films, which have become JUST a platform for the particular prejudice of filmmakers, actors and producers.
