Charlie Hebdo Rejects Catholic Support
Catholic Culture ^ | 1/15/15

The editors of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo have announced that they do not want the support of the Catholic Church in the wake of a massacre at their offices in Paris.

In an editorial published in the first issue following the killings, the staff of Charlie Hebdo poked fun at some of the public figures who had joined in shows of public support. The editorial said:

What made us laugh the most is that the bells of Notre Dame rang in our honor. We would like to send a message to Pope Francis-- who also was Charlie this week: We will only accept the bells of Notre Dame ringing in our honor when it is Femen who make them ring."

(Femen is the radical feminist group whose members have staged topless demonstrations in several European cathedrals.)

Considering the Pope basically said they got what they deserved for insulting muhammad, I don’t blame them.

"It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

Good. The Pope was hinting at blasphemy laws. Blasphemy laws are SHARIA LAW.

If Charlie Hebdo gets the Pope to shut up, they will have done their good deed for the year.

Bill Donohue came close to saying the same thing.

I have no problem with Femen, at least those that are members of the Swedish Bikini Team.

That’s what free speech is, we don’t get to choose what is censored and what is not, otherwise it is censored speech to prevent the insulting of certain groups, religious or otherwise....not free speech at all.

The POPE was wrong....and if the POPE gets to say who a person can make fun of, what does that make him?

This has nothing to do with what the Pope or Donohue said. Hebdo is intrinsically and adamantly opposed to organized religion.

Before last week's attack the magazine had published cartoons portraying the Holy Trinity in sodomy and had labeled Jesus as the "child of sin". Their disdain for Catholic support stems from their disdain for Catholicism per se and predates anything +Francis or Donohue said.

As the above link makes clear, this had resulted in multiple lawsuits filed by Christians. They're essentially the poster children for the new Europe; secular, libertine and godless. A more aggressive French equivalent of Bill Maher.

You cannot insult the faith of others.

That's what Francis has been doing to Catholics since becoming Pope.

That is what happens when you cross a “Mad Magazine” with a “Hustler Magazine”.

“Blasphemy laws are SHARIA LAW.”

Only Sharia Law? God says otherwise:

“...anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death” (Lev 24:16)

As a Catholic you should know that the commandments oppose blasphemy. http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/2148.htm

It is possible to commit blasphemy only against the true God or holy things closely connected with the true God. Thus, there is no such thing as “blasphemy” against Mohammed or Islam.

I wasn’t talking about the moral law. I was talking about civil law.

Any attempt to put anti-blasphemy laws into our civil law is an attempt to impose a key component of Sharia Law.

That comment ignores more than 2,000 years of western legal history. http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/oct/18/religion.world
