The Resurrection & The Eucharist

The Resurrection & The Eucharist by Fr. Rodney Kissinger S.J. (Former Missouri Synod Lutheran) http://www.frksj.org/homily_ressurection_and_the_eucharist.htm There is an important connection between the Resurrection and the Eucharist. The Eucharist IS the Risen Jesus.

Therefore, the Eucharist makes the Resurrection present and active in our lives and enables us to experience the joy and the power of the Resurrection.

The Resurrection is the reason for the observance of Sunday instead of the Sabbath. According to the Gospel it was early in the morning on the first day of the week that the Risen Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene.

It was also on the evening of that first day of the week that the Risen Jesus appeared to the Apostles when Thomas was not present. Then a week later, on the first day of the week, he appeared again when Thomas was present.

So the Apostles began to celebrate the first day of the week, Sunday, as the beginning of the re-creation of the world just as they had celebrated the Sabbath as the end of the creation of the world. Originally the Liturgical Year was simply fifty-two Sundays, fifty-two celebrations of the Eucharist, fifty-two celebrations of the Resurrection. Today the Eucharist is still the principal way of celebrating the Resurrection and proclaiming the Mystery of Faith: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.”

As we have seen the joy and the power of the Resurrection is not found in the empty tomb or in the witness of some one else it is found only in a personal encounter with the Risen Jesus. The Eucharist, the Risen Jesus, gives us an opportunity for this personal encounter. Will all who receive the Eucharist have a personal encounter with the Risen Jesus? Yes they will. Unfortunately, not all will recognize the Risen Jesus.

Mary Magdalene had a personal encounter with the Risen Jesus but did not recognize him. She thought it was the gardener. It was not until she recognized Jesus that she experienced the joy and the power of the Resurrection. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had a personal encounter with the Risen Jesus and thought that it was a stranger. It was not until they recognized him in the “breaking of the bread” that they experienced the joy and the power of the Resurrection.

The Eucharist is also a pledge of our own resurrection. “I am the living bread come down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” The Eucharist tells us that in death life is changed not ended. It is not so much life after death but life through death. Death is the door to life. This takes away the fear of death and gives us consolation at the death of a loved one.

The Eucharist also continues the two fold effect of the Resurrection which is to confirm the faith of the Apostles and to create the Christian Community. These are two sides of the same coin. To believe is to belong. Community was an integral part of the life of the first Christians. They were of one mind and one heart. When the Apostles asked the Lord to teach them how to pray, he taught them the “OUR Father.” In the Creed we say, “WE believe.” It is a personal commitment made in the community of believers.

The Eucharist also confirms the faith of the recipient and is the principle of unity and community. Without the Christian Community we lose our roots and our identity and our ability to survive in our culture which is diametrically opposed to Christ.

Through the Eucharist the Risen Jesus continues his two fold mission of proclaiming the Good News and healing the sick. Every celebration of the Eucharist proclaims the Good News and heals the sick. The Liturgy of the Word proclaims the Good News and the Liturgy of the Eucharist heals the sick. If people were healed simply by touching the hem of His garment how much more healing must come from receiving His Body and Blood?

How ridiculous it is then when people ask, “Do I have an obligation to go to Mass on Sunday?” If obligation is going to determine whether or not you go to Mass forget the obligation. You have a greater problem than that. Your problem is faith, you don’t believe. You don’t believe that the Eucharist IS the Risen Christ.

You just don’t realize the connection between the Resurrection and the Eucharist.

In just a few moments we will receive the Eucharist and once again have an opportunity for a personal encounter with the Risen Jesus.

Let us ask for the faith to recognize him in the “breaking of the bread” so that we are able to say with Thomas, “My Lord and my God,” and in so doing experience the joy and the power of the Resurrection.

You don't acknowledge Mary as the woman prophesied in Genesis 3:15, she whose offspring (Jesus)would crush the Serpent;

Of course I don't acknowledge it because it isn't true...Jesus' mother never did and never will crush anyone...That woman is Israel...

you don't call Mary "Blessed" although she prophesied that all generations would do so;

I don't think you know what I do...But I admit I don't worship her nor will I ever pray to her or bow down to a statue of Mary...God forbids that...

and you don't regard yourself as her spiritual offspring (as in Revelation 12:17) in the ongoing cosmic battle against the Serpent --- that selfsame Serpent who started the whole ball of sin and death rolling in Genesis 3.

Well of course I don't...Christians don't have a spiritual mother...There's not an ounce of information in the scriptures about a 'spiritual mother' let alone what to do with one...

While 'that woman is doing her thing, the church is in heaven preparing for the Wedding to the Groom...That woman has nothing to do with the church...That woman is Israel...

And I am certanly not going to latch onto a story of someone seeing a ghost which, according to the stories calls itself Mary and tells me to worship it and build churches to honor it...TEST THE SPIRITS...PROVE ALL THINGS...

It seems you have ignored her from Genesis to Revelation. It's Catholic/Orthodox wisdom which has "cross-referenced with other scriptures so the full meaning comes to light..."

Catholic wisdom is not Godly wisdom...As we all know Catholicism is built upon human philosophy, NOT God's wisdom, nor scripture...

Outside a couple of verses in Isaiah there is no reference in the O.T. to the mother of Jesus...

which is so far from your usual way of thinking about Scripture, you seem boggled by it. And that's unfortunate. But it could be helped if you'd look for the Big Picture.

I am not boggled at all...And the big picture is in Rev. 17...

This is not stealing glory from God, but rather God's freedom to give glory to those on whom His favor rests.

So you just ignore those scriptures in the O.T.??? Or God was lying??? Or perhaps you don't understand...

God will give us glory but it will not be HIS glory...THAT, he will share with no one...

we who are predestined (as Mary was predestined to be the Woman in enmity against Satan, Genesis 3:17)---

Mary is no where near Genesis...A study of the scriptures will show anyone that the woman is Israel...

Since Jesus was predestined to be the firstborn of many brothers, Mary was therefore predestined to be the spiritual mother of many offspring (Revelation 12:17)

Mary is not in Rev. 12...You again have to trash half the chapter to squeak Mary in there...

have a good look at that chapter of Revelation, for she and we her "many offspring" are still, as you will notice, enemies of the Serpent.

Mary has no spiritual offspring...The church is not an offspring of Mary, spiritual or otherwise...God doesn't have a mother...There is not a God with a mother any where in the scriptures...

Well good on you...It is so sad that abused kids don’t know any better but to love their parents regardless of the abuse...They just don’t understand...Truly heartbreaking...

So by your admission we can stick with the meaning Papyrus since that is the one that even predates book.

Speaking of papyrus...

Kolob is a star or planet described in Mormon scripture.
Reference to Kolob is found in the Book of Abraham.

Figure Joseph Smith Explanation[52] Explanation by non-Mormon and Mormon Egyptologists (quotes are from Deveria)[25][43][53]
1 Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God. First in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. The measurement according to celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit. One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth, which is called by the Egyptians Jah-oh-eh. "The spirit of the four elements (according to Champollion), or rather of the four winds, or the four cardinal points; the soul of the terrestrial world. This god is always represented with four rams' heads, and his image has certainly been altered here. — They have also evidently made a very clumsy attempt at copying the double human head of the god figured above, fig. 2, instead of the four rams' heads. The word Jah-oh-eh has nothing Egyptian in it; it resembles the Hebrew word [redacted] badly transcribed." (emphasis in original) The name hieroglyph above the central figure is Chnm-Re, the Egyptian "First Creator" god who organized everything out of the primordial chaos.

There is no truth in Mormonism.

Oh; there's some.

Else NO one would latch onto it.

They ask you to 'pray about' the BoM; NOT the 'other' Mormon Scripture.

Throw out the goofy 'history' in the BoM and you'll find some bible lurking there.

Is Christ an offspring of Rahab?

The biblical Mary IS blessed.

You are doing a fine job of that. And don't forget that the original meaning of the word scripture is "writing."

Something I used to tell the Marine recruits years ago "When you find yourself in the bottom of a hole: STOP DIGGING."

Mary, our spiritual Mother of Christ, stood under a different tree, at the Crucifixtion, and delivered her children of mankind over to salvation, before her eyes—

Mary didn't deliver anyone to Jesus...Mary was blessed...She was not a blessing to us...

I believe you misplace what you see, in the bending of the knee, bringing her flowers, lighting candles, paying respects and uttering prayers for her intercession, as worship. It is not worship.

You left out praying TO Mary...You (guys) always leave out praying TO Mary...I guess that's because you know that praying TO any one other than God is worship...

She intercedes with her son, who is with the Father. She intercedes not between Man and God, but between man and Jesus her son, on my behalf. As you would do, for me. It is then Jesus who intercedes between man and God.

No one needs an intercessor between man and Jesus...It is God to whom we pray, in Jesus' name...

We pray to God and invoke the name of Jesus...Jesus then says, yay Father, he/she's one of mine...This prayer's goin' thru...

God is the Maker of the universe. Mary birthed the new people of God, through Jesus and his believers.

NOPE...We are adopted...

(The Jews therefore, are now the people of God, the Chosen ones, only as they become Christian, in the holy nation, the Church Christ built for the people of God).

The Bible isn't your forte', is it...

I don't forget.

Yet that still does not equate with Mary being Spirit Mother of us all.

Which leaves what Mrs. Don-O has been promoting in way of apologetic and theology both (the apologetic ostensibly justifying the theology) not all that "well put", despite how well packaged...

Who used that term [bolded emphasis mine] except yourself ? Have you erroneously attributed it to another ?

"You don't acknowledge Mary as the woman prophesied in Genesis 3:15?....I don't acknowledge it because it isn't true...Jesus' mother never did and never will crush anyone...That woman is Israel...

Here's the thing: it's the Messiah Who crushes the Serpent. Right or wrong? And Mary is the mother of the Messiah. Right or wrong? Therefore the daughter of Israel, therefore the daughter of Eve, bingo: there's the lo-o-o-ng chain from Eve (and the seed of the Woman), through Israel (begat, begat, begat) to Mary (the true Daughter of Israel), whose Seed is Jesus, He who crushes the Serpent.

This is Christ-centered, not Israel-centered: although of course, Israel is a major, meaningful part of that chain. "Salvation is from the Jews," as Jesus said.

You do see that Mary is the Mother of the Messiah, right?

"Christians don't have a spiritual mother...There's not an ounce of information in the scriptures about a 'spiritual mother'"

Here's a couple of ounces :o)---

"Jesus said to the beloved disciple, 'Behold, thy mother.'" Aren't you a beloved disciple? Do you not see that not only was he to care for her, but she was to care for them?

> And how can I justify extending this to you and to me as beloved disciples? Because that's what it says in Revelation 12:17 ----

"Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus."

You wouldn't want to say you're NOT one of her offspring, would you?

"The big picture is in Rev. 17..."

Oh yes! That is big! And it gets even bigger in Rev. 21:

The Spirit and the Bride say, Come!

Yes, the woman in Rev. 12 is Israel, for from Israel was Mary, the mother of Jesus.

This DOES have a reference to Jesus of the Gospels, you know. He was a son of Israel, on His mother's side. You do see that Mary is the Mother of the Messiah, right?

Israel? Well, yes, of course! And I believe it's a Christ-centered message really, isn't it? And Christ's Mother was his connection to Israel.
