Archbishop Chaput Releases Statement on Fired Catholic School Staffer
ABC Action News Philly ^ | 7/13/15

The head of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is weighing in on the firing of teacher from a Montgomery County Catholic school, who allegedly lost her job because of her same-sex marriage.

Margie Winters says she lost her job as the religious education director at Waldron Mercy Academy because of her marriage to Andrea Vittori.

More than 100 people gathered together in support Winters at General Wayne Park in Lower Merion Township on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm here to support Margie and let her know what was done to her was unjust, discriminatory and unfair," said Anthony Arechavale, parent.

"I think it's a shame she was fired because she's such a great influence on all our lives," said Stella Peterson.

Winters says the school principal knew she was gay and married when she was hired eight years ago.

She says a parent recently found out about her marriage and complained to the school's trustees.

When Winters wouldn't resign, she told Action News last week that she was then fired.

Supporters say they don't expect this from a school that teaches mercy.

"I think it's good that she loves who she wants to love and that she's happy, that's all I care about," said Katie Dewey, 7th grader.

"We need more transparency," said Tara Dolan, supporter.

Dolan, who taught at another school run by the sisters of Waldron Mercy, wants to know who's really behind the firing.

Chaput's statement of support for the school's firing of the teacher comes right at the end of the article after all the accolades for the lesbian.

What part of Catholic and Education do these people not understand?

Perhaps the delay, by which the Church, in this aspect, may have damned itself.

The school principal should be fired as well.

“What part of Catholic and Education do these people not understand?”

Apparently they don’t understand the Catholic part.

Poorest excuse for objective journalism today but maybe not the worst ever. The lesbian in question is a fine example of Rule 24 in Limbaugh’s 35 Undeniable Truths of Life. Those who have decided to protest the firing ought to re-evaluate their commitment to Catholic teachings and move on down the road if they believe this decision by the school is wrong.

OK so the teacher got married in Boston 8 years ago. She’s been working at the school that whole time, the school knew she was gay and that she was married and was fine with it so long as the teacher didn’t discuss the matter with the students, and she appears to have complied with those directions. So having gone along with it for 8 years now the school says that having her violates Catholic teachings? Either the school has been violating Catholic teachings for 8 years and didn’t have a problem with it. Or something in Catholic teachings has changed within the past couple of weeks. Which is it?

It’s not “mercy” to let a person continue in objective evil. It’s also not “mercy” to allow children to be exposed to such obstinacy. Exactly what kind of role model do these parents expect for their precious little ones?

I’ll bet if she smoked on school grounds no one would have a problem with her being fired (not that anyone should be fired for that, it just goes to show their probable hypocrisy).

We all know “the smoker” is the greatest evil of our society who must be purged. Sleeping with another of the same sex? Eh, who cares. But SMOKE?! You’re the Devil himself!

She's been teaching at the school for 8 years. She's been gay that whole time, married that whole time, and the school knew about it for the whole time. The correct question is why is the school suddenly concerned with Catholic and Education when they don't appear to have been in the past?

You have a point of course and it’s this: the school was wrong to hire her in the first place. It’s good they corrected the error but they should be liable for some kind of damage here. It’s only just: they employed her for 8 years! It’s de facto consent!

I applaud them for correcting the error but shame on them for perpetuating it for so long. A hefty severance package should teach them to be more discriminating (when did that become such a bad word anyway)

There are plenty of schools that share her philosophy. Public schools, for instance. Let her teach in one of those.

I’m not that familiar with the Sisters of Mercy but how much do you want to bet that they are a bunch of liberal, plain-clothes nuns?

Should never have hired her in the first place against their own doctrine and now shocker, consequences.

Margie Winters says she lost her job as the religious education director....

Good grief. And to think that parents are paying good money for their kids to attend this school.

I'm very grateful to the Religious Sisters of Mercy and to the principal and board members of Waldron Mercy for taking the steps to ensure that the Catholic faith is presented in a way fully in accord with the teaching of the Church. They've shown character and common sense at a moment when both seem to be uncommon."

Exactly where was that character and common sense 8 years ago? What precipitated a conscience here, now? Forgive me if I remain skeptical.
