How to Go to Heaven

May 12, 2015 |

Sometimes people make it sound like the Catholic understanding of how to get to heaven is really complex.

It’s not.

While you can go into any of Christ’s teachings in a lot of very rich detail, he made sure that this one can be understood even by a child.

I can summarize it in two sentences.

The two sentences are these: To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And we can show each of these things from the Bible.

The need to repent is shown by the fact that, right at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus began preaching the gospel, saying “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14-15).

The need for faith is shown when the author of the letter to the Hebrews writes that “Without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6).

And the need for baptism is shown when St. Peter flatly tells us: “Baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21).

So that’s what you need to do if you want to come to God and be saved: Repent, have faith, and be baptized.

If you do these things, you’ll be in a state of grace, and as long as you remain in a state of grace, you’ll go to heaven.

But we still have free will, and we can still turn our backs on God and fall from grace, to use St. Paul’s phrase (Galatians 5:4).

St. Paul is very clear about the possibility of us committing mortal sin. He tells us: “Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

To turn away from God and commit mortal sin is the opposite of repenting. So when we fall into mortal sin, we need to turn back to God—to repent again.

We also need to have faith.

And then we need to go to confession. This is something Jesus indicated just after he rose from the dead. He came to his disciples, breathed on them, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23)

So Jesus empowered his ministers to forgive or retain sins. In order for a priest to know whether he is to forgive or retain a sin, he needs to know about the sin and whether we have repented of it. That means we need to go and tell him these things, and so we have the sacrament of confession.

So that’s what you need to do. To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

It’s all thoroughly biblical.

this is speaking of sin that leads to earthly death! not eternal death

Now that's just nonsense. Why would you "not pray" about a sin that leads to earthly death???

Mortal sin merely points out that there are serious and not so serious sins....cussing out your golf shot is not that serious an offense....committing adultery....remarriage after divorce for example, is a much more serious offense.

According to your religion perhaps but not according to God...

Jas 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

That's some pretty simple stuff right there...

1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him

Oh Oh.....There goes your mortal sin...Hating your brother then is a mortal sin...They may be different to you but to God they are all the same...

And He gave us His written word to guide us.

He did?

The gospels and Acts say that Jesus appointed apostles and founded a Church. The only writing by Jesus that is ever mentioned is writing in the dust when the woman is brought to Him to be judged. Jesus never ONCE instructs his apostles or anyone else to write anything. What He DOES instruct them to do is teach, baptize, offer the Eucharist, and forgive sins. I.e., exercise teaching authority, baptize, celebrate the Mass, and hear Confessions and absolve people of their sins.

Some of these same people supported his actions.

It was pure lip service, Jim was paying attention and handing out Zots at the time.

Why would anyone correct behaviour they already find to be perfectly acceptible in the first place?

Really When my son is ordained in a few years all the area pastors will attend the service They will lay hands on him and pray for his ministry we are not catholic It is part of the commissioning ceremony of our church However it does not impart any special holiness or authority on him beyond that of any other believer It is a graduation ceremony of sorts that gives my son the right to act as pastor and perform all the duties as pastor in our church much like the diploma I got entitles me to practice medicine however it imparts no special holiness or authority that is not available to any other believer

Stop being so touchy....these threads are fun and interesting...controversy is the very heart of conversation....how very boring would it be to post a fact and have 500 people say ...yup, I agree.

Grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. No further explanation needed.

Bless your day.

Remember, Jesus breathed on them (Holy Spirit), saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them, whose sins you bind will be held bound.”

Jesus breathes on all of us who receive the Holy Ghost...

to God they are all the same

On this topic, we have the very words of God himself to look at:

Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” -- John 19:11, NKJV

You say all sins are the same. Jesus says they aren't. I think I'll go with Jesus on this one.

Some things that you don’t grasp now will become clear to you in Purgatory.

The early Church Fathers, of course, were unanimous in teaching the reality of mortal sin.

You have some documentation on that??? From what I've seen the early church fathers weren't unanimous on anything...

All of Christs truth relevant to salvation is in scripture I know you believe your system has a monopoly on truth, it does not even Paul said we all see as through a mirror darkly And many Christians through the years have rejected what they see as erroneous in your denomination it is not the monopoly you would like to believe As I said before the only common ground you and I have is to agree to disagree

Any sin leads to eternal death. In fact, you are destined to die from conception, because all of us are sinful from that point!
