Among these more progressive voices, Cardinal Cottier himself has been earlier in the news, in 2009, when he argued that Obama in his Notre Dame address had not defended abortion as an absolute right and that the president recognizes the “tragic gravity” of the problem. Cottier also then said that Obama does not defend “relativism,” and that “his words move in the direction of reducing the evil” in trying to make “the number of abortions as small as possible.”

Mercy yes! But mercy comes after sorrow and a firm purpose of amendment.

Yes, God is merciful to sinners who repent. But not to those who freely choose to remain in their sins, despite the offer of mercy. And still less to those in the Church hierarchy who encourage such sinners to remain in their sins and tell them it’s OK.

Whatever happens, surely they shouldn’t do anything redemptive.

He also says: “In rigorism there is an innate brutality that goes against the gentle way God has of guiding each person.”

Oh really?

"And when he had made, as it were, a scourge of little cords, he drove them all out of the temple, the sheep also and the oxen, and the money of the changers he poured out, and the tables he overthrew.

And to them that sold doves he said: Take these things hence, and make not the house of my Father a house of traffic." John 2: 15-16

"Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, and you perish from the just way. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they that trust in him." Psalms 2: 12-13

"Whatever happens, surely they shouldn’t do anything redemptive."

I'm simply puzzled. Maybe you can help me out. Who is "they" in this sentence? And what is "something redemptive"?

“I’m simply puzzled.”

I find it hard to believe you are ever puzzled Mrs. Don-o!

I’m puzzled, too. If Matthew 19 means what it appears to say, then divorced and remarried individuals are continuously committing adultery. So the adulterers are probably the ones who need to do something redemptive, I’m guessing. The adulterers would be the “they.”

Our Redeemer can redeem them, but not while they continue in adultery, surely? Surely they would need to cease their sin and repent. That must be what is meant by “something redemptive.”

It’s not really clear from the post, but surely that is what was meant.

He was a hireling of JPII:

He took part as an expert in the Second Vatican Council and was a consultor to the then-Council for Dialogue with Non-Believers, participating in colloquiums around the world.

In 1986 he was appointed a member of the International Theological Commission and became its secretary in 1989.

In 1990, he was nominated Theologian of the Pontifical Household. He has also served as president of historical-theological commission of the organizing committee of the Grand Jubilee of the Year 2000. Presently, he serves as director of the journal Nova et Vetera (Geneva), founded by Cardinal Journet.

Preconized Cardinal, was elected to the titular Church of Tullia, with personal title of Archbishop, on 7 October 2003 and consacrated on 20 October.

Theologian emeritus of the Pontifical Household, 1 December 2005

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by John Paul II in the Consistory of 21 October 2003, of the Deaconry of Ss. Domenico e Sisto (Sts. Dominic and Sixtus).

COTTIER Card. Georges Marie Martin, O.P.

Judas was appointed by Jesus.

And God also created Lucifer. And Lucifer's in Hell.

Cottier is still "Theologian emeritus of the Pontifical Household", however.

So, does “Theolgian Emeritus of the Papal Household” beat Apostle of Jesus Christ?

What in the heck are you talking about?

It was you who called Cottier a “hireling”. Who hired him?

I guess I’ll wait until aMPU provides more explanation. I too thought “they” meant the adulterers, but maybe aMPU meant the Church?

And in the same way it is a grave mistake to think of Judas as a demon without any elements of goodness and grace. In his fall is left a warning that even the great grace of the Apostolate and the familiar friendship of Jesus may be of no avail to one who is unfaithful.
