Do You Believe that Jesus Was the “Son of God”?

Most of us who teach in the field of Christian Origins get asked from time to time by students or in public lectures, “Professor, Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?”

Scholars are aware of the rich and diverse ways in which the term “Son of God” is used in the Hebrew Bible, in subsequent Jewish literature, and in the New Testament writings themselves, not to mention various non-Jewish texts (including inscriptions and coins) of the Greco-Roman period. Most of us who teach in the field of Christian Origins get asked from time to time by students or in public lectures, “Professor, do you believe Jesus was X.” Sometimes X is “Messiah,” other times it is “Divine,” but in my experience, most often, the question is “Do you believe that Jesus was the Son of God.” In good Socratic fashion one is tempted to reply, “Well what do you mean by the term ‘Son of God,’ and such a counter question is certainly more than subterfuge. Here is a listing of most of the complex ways in which that term is used in the Christian Bible and other related traditions:

Yes I believe Jesus Christ is the Son Of GOD. I’m thankful that by faith I can accept it. I’m thankful I don’t have to fully understand it. And I can imagine how perplexed the ones he chose as Disciples must have been.

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light: true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from the heavens, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man; And was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried; And arose again on the third day according to the Scriptures; And ascended into the heavens, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father; And shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life; Who proceedeth from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the prophets. In One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, And the life of the age to come. Amen.

You either believe Holy Scripture is the inerrant Word of God or you don’t. I do, he does not. Pretty simple. When people make things complex and convoluted with big words it is either because they don’t know what they are talking about or they don’t want you to know what they are talking about or both. You pick.

“Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

CS Lewis

Yes, Jesus IS the Son of God.

I suppose the next question is, “Does the sun rise in the east?”

No Satan was not a Son of God ...unless your a Mormon.......

When God created the heavens there was a time when all the angels were united together in worship and service to God and harmony existed in heaven..... One angels name; a Cherub was called Day star,... this is the original name of Satan who was to reflect God’s glory unlike any other angel..... He was created as the greatest creature in the universe, until he fell with pride.

The angels included Satan, who knew God as their creator as they were created ‘a heavenly species’ before Adam was made.

All was in harmony in heaven until this one creature on a certain day decided to break ranks.

This is described in Isa.14 and Ezekiel 28

.....”When people make things complex and convoluted with big words it is either because they don’t know what they are talking about or they don’t want you to know what they are talking about or both.”....

It's an enemy's tactic often....just look at the first sin and how satan twisted things up in knots.....using doubt was the bait enticing Eve to question what God clearly said.

...and that has stood the test of time as a tactic.
