Justice Antonin Scalia: A very traditional Catholic
NCR (The Fishwrap) ^ | 02-15-2016 | Maureen Fiedler

There have been thousands of words written about Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died on Feb. 13. Most describe his political and legal views, which were very conservative. But I have read very little about his religious beliefs. And they were easily as conservative as his legal views.

Scalia was a Roman Catholic, one of six on the Supreme Court. But Scalia was a very traditional Roman Catholic. He was not comfortable with the changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council. He was so traditional that, in fact, he searched out and attended a Tridentine Mass in Latin when he lived in Chicago, and later in Washington, D.C. Reportedly, he travelled to St. Catherine of Siena church in Great Falls, Va., to attend a Latin Mass -- a distance from Washington, D.C.

And of course, he was married with nine children. "Being a devout Catholic means you have children when God gives them to you," he told his biographer, Joan Biskupic. One of his sons, Paul, entered the priesthood.

His funeral is to be held at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I wonder if it will be traditional Requiem Mass (1962 Missal). I am sure that is what he would have wanted.

I doubt that. My guess is that Mrs. Scalia would veto anything that she thinks her husband would not have put up with.

Agreed. It’ll be interesting to see if that happens.

Also, though, I wonder if the article’s author knows that a Mass said in Latin is not necessarily a Tridentine Mass. I haven’t yet attended a “Latin” Mass that wasn’t a simple Latin translation of the post-Vat II Mass. And, of course, with modern church-design, it’s getting more and more difficult for the celebrant NOT to face the congregation.

Yes, versum populam orientation...the single most destructive change from the comedy of errors known as Vatican II...

I didn’t search to find out which church he attended but I suspected. I look forward to laughing with him for eternity.

Except that there was nothing in the Vatican II documents calling for the priest facing the people. That was a later change, years after Vatican II. http://www.adoremus.org/0405LiturgicalPrayer.html

God assumed from the beginning that the wise of the world would view Christians as fools....and He has not been disappointed. Devout Christians are destined to be regarded as fools in modern society. We are fools for Christs sake. We must pray for courage to endure the scorn of the sophisticated world. If I have brought any message today, it is this: Have the courage to have your wisdom regarded as stupidity. Be fools for Christ. And have the courage to suffer the contempt of the sophisticated world.

Having reread the article, the answer to that question is likely obvious; his son the priest will have a great deal to say about this. As an aside, Scalia’s son Matt is a Lieutenant Colonel, West Point graduate who is airborne & ranger qualified.

I would agree with you.

And, btw, WHAT a kind answer to a poster LOOKIN' for trouble. Scalia would have approved of your attitude, I think.

Presumably Justice Scalia was smart enough to leave funeral instructions.

He is my foolish hero.

If only I could wish to follow in his footsteps but I have learned much too late to be such a fool.

We are lucky to have had that boy with his finger in the dike for so long.

God speed AntoninAntonio may you hear the words “well done my good and faithful servant enter into paradise”

Why are you saying these things?

You are only speculating, correct?

"Being a devout Catholic means you have children when God gives them to you,"

Not that I've observed.

I’ve been there. It’s a breathtakingly beautiful building and most appropriate for the services. It’s associated with the Catholic University rather than a parish, so I expect that Mrs. Scalia can have whoever she wants to perform the funeral service.
