Pope Francis has called on Catholic leaders to seek a ban on the death penalty exclaiming that 'Thou shall not kill applies to the guilty as well as the innocent'.

Speaking to thousands at St. Peter's Square, in the Vatican, the Pontiff asked politicians around the world to make 'a courageous and exemplary gesture' during the Church's current Holy Year.

He said: 'I appeal to the consciences of those who govern to reach an international consensus to abolish the death penalty...

Indeed.
"The soul that sinneth, it shall die."

Ezekiel 18:4 and 18:20

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Romans 6:23
Only Jesus' death can pay for all the sins of mankind, whereas one's own death can only pay for one's sins individually.

Yes, thou shall not murder. Is my understanding too. Self defense (and lots more) is impossible under thou shall not kill.

I’m no theologian, but I know the Catechism.

He can make a call for abolition of the Death Penalty, but his statement that “Thou shall not kill” applies to the guilty”, does not comport with Catholic teaching.

The state has the right to use the death penalty.

The Biblical admonition is properly interpreted as “thou shalt not MURDER”. Killing bad guys is (1) punishment and (2) self defense.

Think it might be too much trouble for someone to mention this to ISIS?

Someone within those 40- or 50- foot high Vatican walls which were built in the 800s to keep out Muslims, maybe?

The Pope forgets that capital punishment was GOD’S invention.

Dennis Prager is my go to guy on the death penalty. He makes a strong moral case for it. Everything I’ve read says the commandment means thou shalt not “murder.” If you wrongfully take an innocent life why should you have the right to walk around alive. You forfeit your right to life when you deny another that right. We honor the value of life by taking the life of murderers. To do less, is a dishonor to the victim and their survivors. IMO.
