The Vatican’s Statement On UK Baby Condemned To Die Is Frightening
thefederalist.com ^ | June 30, 2017 | Daniel Payne

The ugliest political battle currently underway in Western society is not between Donald Trump and Mika Brzezinski or the United Kingdom and the European Union but between two parents with a dying baby and the British courts. The baby, Charlie Gard, has been terminally ill since his birth, unable to move his limbs or breathe on his own.

His parents wish to bring him to the United States for a long-shot experimental treatment. The courts object, believing Charlie should be allowed to die “with dignity.” The European Court of Human Rights declined to hear an appeal, effectively sealing the boy’s fate.

Against the backdrop of this barbaric abuse of judicial authority, the Catholic Church—the world’s greatest defender of the right to life, and long a moral bulwark against state intrusion into the rights of the family sphere—has decided that the courts in this case are basically right.

These are difficult times for orthodox Catholics, beset by a pope who often appears inclined to dismiss centuries of church teaching and a fair number of bishops who are apparently determined to follow him. Catechetical esoterica regarding Eucharistic doctrine, of course, can seem hopelessly complex for even the lay Catholic these days.

But the Catholic Church’s position on the sanctity of life is unmistakable to anyone, and has been for several thousand years. Its stance on the authority of the family has also long been clear. We should assume that the Vatican would be more than happy to condemn and rebuke in no uncertain terms an idiot juridical decision that condemns a little baby boy to die rather than allowing his parents to fight for his once chance to survive.

Government health care is so compassionate...”health care is a human right”...”death panels are a right-wing myth”

All BS of course.

Praying for the parents

The academy claims that “we must…accept the limits of medicine,” and as evidence they point to paragraph 65 of Pope Saint John Paul II’s “Evangelium Vitae.” But this is a smokescreen: in that particular passage, the Holy Father merely allows that “one can in conscience” refuse treatment which “no longer corresponds to the real situation of the patient."

Does anyone remember how John Paul reacted when Terri Schiavo was being starved?

I hate it when liberals who can't hold a virtuous candle to our beloved saint, use his words out of context to try to make themselves look moral.

What John Paul meant was that a person who is dying can refuse treatment. In this case, it is the parents who have the God-given right to decide for their son since he is so young.

The devil likes to twist words too.

Perhaps little Charlie is meant to leave us soon, but perhaps he is supposed to help the doctors make the treatment work even if it doesn’t work for him. All of these people involved in keeping Charlie from being helped and/or helping others will have a lot to answer for.

Courts playing God is still blasphemous, especially with respect to whatever God has decided.

Progressives always go where the money is. Many a philanthropic foundation that was conservative in nature at its beginning has been taken over by liberals and progressives. Rockefeller, Ford Foundation, Annenberg, AARP, even NAACP. Why would anyone be surprised that the Catholic Church could be taken over?

He is an antipope. The first blatant one in centuries. Maybe ever, to this degree of deviance.

I am not Catholic and never will be, but growing up in the Eighties I was never bearing anything but only the deepest admiration and respect for John Paul II. JPII, Reagan, Thatcher... now those WERE individuals set up by God for the hour and none since has come close (not even Trump, well not decisively yet anyway...)

To have gone from the virtues of John Paul II to the increasing lawless liberalism of Francis in less than a generation should give pause to all, regardless of denomination.

My words on this topic totally mesh with yours. Not Catholic, but the insidious invasion of Christian churches by the homosexual, social, globalist, anti-life elements must be stopped. These people are rotting out the heart of Christianity as we are under assault by the Islamists.

The parents are under no obligation to try to save the baby, but have THE FULL RIGHT to do so. The courts have no right to say anything in this matter, and the church’s position is well known and has been for years. (That is, until this pope took office and screwed things up.)

In all of these articles, I have seen very few details of the proposed treatment.

It may very well be the case that the treatment is nothing but snake oil; certainly, the name given “nucleoside bypass therapy” makes no sense at all from a scientific point of view. A nucleoside is a sugar (ribose or deoxyribose) linked to a base (A, T, G, C, or U); this is a building block of DNA and RNA. How one bypasses a nucleoside is a mystery, as is how a nucleoside bypasses anything. And if this is a snake oil, then the courts have ruled correctly to prevent a quack from getting rich through exploiting the parents in their pain.

I find it very suspicious that in all of the articles about this case, not one article describes the details of this treatment. I would think that some reporter could dig up details if it is a bona fide treatment for similar mitochondrial diseases.

I really feel for these parents. Having a terminally ill baby is a horrible burden to bear. And there is a good chance (25%) that if they have another baby, it will also be afflicted with the disease. They have a 50% chance of having a baby who carries the defective gene but appears normal, and only a 25% chance of having a normal baby (basic Mendelian genetics).

"But the Catholic Church’s position on the sanctity of life is unmistakable to anyone..."

Yep. The church of Rome's position was unmistakable to the millions of Jews, Christians, Incas, Mayans, Aztecs, and Asians who were tortured and murdered by the most ghastly and despicable means possible for refusing to convert.

All life is sacred. But the church of Rome should be the last organization to go tub-thumping about it, given the history of hypocrisy, sexual predation, extortion, robbery, torture, oppression, and wholesale murder that has accompanied the church of Rome through every era of its sordid history.

Can someone explain to me how a COURT and a GOVERNMENT can stop parents of a child from bringing that child to the United States for a potentially life saving procedure/process/treatment?

What gives them the "right?"

As God is my witness, if I had the means I'd send a plane for that family, bring them here and do whatever's necessary to give that child a shot at life. Every life is precious. Every single one.
