Denying communion to Catholic politicians is ‘toxic,’ N.J.’s Cardinal Tobin warns fellow bishops

Sitting in his office in New Jersey, Cardinal Joseph Tobin looked into his computer’s camera and urged his fellow Catholic bishops to kill a proposal that could lead to denying Holy Communion to political leaders who support abortion rights.

The move could “drive a wedge” between Americans and the Catholic Church, Tobin told the members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops gathered online for the high-profile debate.

“Any effort by this conference to move in support of the categorical exclusion of Catholic political leaders from the Eucharist based on their public policy positions will thrust the bishops of our nation into the very heart of the toxic partisan strife which has distorted our own political culture and crippled meaningful dialogue,” Tobin said.

He vowed to vote “no” on the proposal.

But Tobin — the Archbishop of Newark and the highest ranking Catholic official in New Jersey — was in the minority.

So Cardinal Tobin, what should we do? Should we sit quietly while these slobs are slautering young human beings? You are a man with no guts. You simply do not want to be hurt politically, much like Pope Francis. Get some guts. Stand up and be a man and take a stand against the killing of all these children.

______________

The move could “drive a wedge” between American politicians and the Catholic Church’s dollars those politicians provide direct from the US Treasury for refugee resettlement, Tobin told the members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops gathered online for the high-profile debate.“

There, I fixed it.

Which Americans would the Church drive that wedge between. The ones that follow historic teachings? I’d want to keep those.

Sure. But it’s a priest’s job to save souls.

How does a priest give Communion to politician actively signing documents in direct opposition to the teachings of Christ?

By signing the documents they're clearing stating they're not Catholic.

No, Cardinal it is helping poor misguided souls promulgate abortion and in so committing a grave sin.

It is also putting priests in a terrible bind because they are duty bound not to give the Holy Eucharist to someone they know is not in the state of grace.

“...based on their public policy positions...”

No one is suggesting that. The bishops do not intend to withhold communion from politicians for political views... only for their behavior (not beliefs) that supports, promotes, funds or otherwise participates in the intrinsic evil of abortion. The other issues are not intrinsic evils, and not “abominable” crimes.

I just read the article today in my Sunday Star Ledger. They love Tobin because he railed against Trump, supported Biden and supports the democrat party.

What, pray tell, is the difference of "political views" or "behavior" from "beliefs".

That's an argument, Martin Luther would make: Faith - not works.

Do you think God will fall for that BS at their final judgement?

Cowardice against the pc politicians is not only in the US.

Here in the Philippines, the mayor ordered a hit on his rival and killed five people including our nephew, a bystander.

A few months later he was in the front pew with the VIPs at our local fiesta when the bishop was saying mass. When our cousin went up with the offering she passed him, turned, and shook her fist in his face, saying “you...!”

Later that year the bishop held a mass and had all the politicians swear to no violence during election season...so the next attempt didn't happen until after the election.

Years later the mayor died still awaiting trial 10 years later.. and he was given a full Catholic funeral, complete with a KofC honorguard.

Ah, but the bishops get their knickers in a knot if Duterte’s cops kill drug dealers.

receiving the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin is “toxic”

Yes, toxic to the receiver's soul, just like the unbridled vanity and envy of leftism. In a sinner's public display of contempt towards God, don't worry about God.

Politics has always been the business of telling the big lies. Preachers should shut up and preach. Popes and priests should not get down in the mud with a pig. They get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Politics is not a war of ideas, but a war of interests, and the first causality is the truth, on all sides. Religions should stick to repairing the souls that want to be repaired, and not engaging with Satan.
