I only met him in person once, many years ago. We met for beers in downtown Oslo. We didn't agree on everything: among other things, he had an irrational hostility toward the United States, which I put down, in part at least, to the fact that he had never set foot in the U.S. and that his English was surprisingly poor (we spoke in Norwegian), so that his image of my country was shaped largely by the mainstream Scandinavian media and by various sources in his native tongue, Arabic. But never mind. What mattered was that he loved freedom, hated...

Her name is Faten Mahdi Al-Hussaini. She’s twenty-two years old, she lives in Oslo, she wears a hijab, she’s praised the Ayatollah Khomeini and blamed Jews for all the world’s travails – and she’s the newest star on the state-owned, public-funded Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).

Norway’s revenues from oil and gas production hit a record high this year and are showing no signs of slowing down Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre believes that a total end to oil exploration and production would harm the transition to renewable alternatives in a world still so reliant on oil and gas. He stated, "If we were to say from one day to the other that we close down production from the Norwegian shelf, I believe that would put a stop to an industrial transition that is needed to succeed in the momentum towards net zero . ....

London (CNN)—Western relations with Russia will never again be the same after the war in Ukraine, Norwegian Defense Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide told CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday. "We are faced with a different Russia. I want to warn against the fact that some people see this as something that is going to pass. The situation has changed. And it has changed profoundly." There is "no going back to some sort of normality or some sort of back to normal business. Because that normality does not exist."

A new HVDC line will let Europe store more wind energy in Norway’s hydropower system Norway’s hydropower reservoirs make up nearly half of Europe’s energy storage capacity. European grid operators need energy storage to cope with an ever-mounting, always-shifting torrent of wind power. See the connection? So does Norway. In December, engineers will energize a new subsea power cable that will begin to bridge the gap between need and opportunity, greatly expanding European power systems’ access to Norway’s hydropower-rich power grid. The 240-kilometer cable across the Skagerrak Strait separating southern Norway and northern Denmark is Norway’s first new power link...

A number of books and films have told and made familiar the story of the invasion on April 9, 1940 and occupation of the country of Norway until May 8, 1945 by Nazi Germany during World War II. Germany quickly gained control of major coastal towns, but King Haakon VII and his government refused to surrender and went into exile in Britain. The country was controlled by an occupation force of 300,000 under the military commander General Nikolaus von Falkenhorst, and Adolf Hitler appointed the former gauleiter Josef Terboven as head of the civilian occupation regime. Later, a puppet government...

US President-elect Donald Trump has now spoken with both the Danish and the Swedish prime ministers but Norwegian PM Erna Solberg is still waiting for a phone call from the incoming leader of the free world. […] Denmark’s prime minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, was the first Scandinavian leader to speak with Trump after his surprise victory earlier this month. Rasmussen said that the two men had “a friendly and constructive chat” of about ten minutes on November 16th. Swedish PM Stefan Löfven touched base with the incoming US president on Wednesday for a “brief” telephone conversation. …

On Wednesday, Norway will become the first country in the world to start shutting down its national FM radio network in favor of digital radio. Norwegians have had years to prepare, but the move is still catching many off guard. FM radio and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) has existed side-by-side since 1995, but officials with Norway’s Ministry of Culture have decided that the time has finally come to retire the older transmission medium. The FM apocalypse starts tomorrow morning in Nordland, the country’s north. Beginning at 11:11 am local time, the FM network will be taken down in a gradual...

Norway Is Running Out of Gas-Guzzling Cars to Tax

When it comes to sales of electric cars, Norway is in a league of its own. In September, battery-powered electric vehicles accounted for 77.5 percent of all new cars sold. That figure makes Norway a world leader by a long way—leapfrogging over the UK, where 15 percent of new car sales were electric as of October, and the US, where that number is just 2.6 percent. Norway’s electric dream has been credited to a series of tax breaks and other financial carrots that mean brands like Tesla can compete on price with combustion engines. But these incentives—and their success—have created...

Norway’s parliament has rejected a proposal to bring in a third gender category with the gender-neutral personal pronoun “hen”. The proposal was part of a new action plan for lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI), people put forward by Norway’s Labour Party. But the reform was rejected by the Conservative Party, the Progress Party, the Christian Democrats and the Center Party — which together represent a majority of seats in the Norwegian parliament, the Dagen newspaper reported on Tuesday. Jan Elisabeth Lindvik, leader of the Association for Transgender People, said it was only a matter of time before a...

At its national conference, Norway’s governing Høyre party announced that it plans to scrap a mandatory airline tax connected to last year's closure of Oslo Rygge Airport. The party wants to replace the flat fee with a new type of tax that would have a “clear environmental effect,” reports newspaper Dagbladet. The proposal, which came from the Østfold division of the party, was made at the end of a debate on transport. […] RSL closed down operations on November 1st 2016 following Ryanair’s decision to cease using the airport after the introduction of the tax. Around 1,000 people are estimated...

A new report from the Norwegian Police Security Service (Politiets Sikkerhetstjeneste — PST) has found that nearly every fifth radicalized Muslim is a convert to the religion. The PST study attempted to investigate the backgrounds of people in extreme Islamist groups. Everyone in the representative sample study by the security service had been radicalized in Norway and all were under the age of 40. A full 88 percent of the radicalized individuals have an ethnic background other than Norwegian and over 30 different nationalities are represented amongst the radicalized individuals. Some 76 percent of the extremists have Norwegian citizenship. The...

A giraffe at Norway’s Kristiansand zoo was gored to death on Monday by an eland antelope as horrified adults and children looked on. ”It was very traumatic. People were crying everywhere,” Øivind Hansen, who witnessed the killing, told VG. His daughter Sissel Finstad, 23, had come home crying from the zoo. ”It was a horrible experience for everyone who saw it. It has really affected people,” he said. Per Arnstein Aamodt, the zoo's chief executive, confirmed that the giraffe, which had been stuck in a fence, had been killed by the antelope.

Statistics Norway wants to receive several million daily receipts from food stores, signalling a new era in state data collection. Privacy advocates and the supermarkets themselves are unhappy. People living in Norway are used to big government. But the latest news coming out of Oslo is a surprising new step down the road of data collection that not everyone is happy with. Statistics Norway (SSB) is the state-owned entity responsible for collecting, producing and communicating statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels. Because everything about an individual living in Norway is linked to...

Eager to pay more taxes? Then look no further than Norway. Hammered by the opposition for slashing taxes and going on a spending spree with the country’s oil money, the center-right government has hit back with a bold proposal: voluntary contributions. Launched in June, the initiative has received a lukewarm reception, with the equivalent of just $1,325 in extra revenue being collected so far, according to the Finance Ministry. That’s not much for a country of 5.3 million people, many of whom are already accustomed to paying some of the highest taxes in the world (the top rate of income...
