HE HOUSE CAUCUS TO RETURN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY TO MINORITY STATUS--also known as the House Immigration Reform Caucus--held a press conference Thursday. The GOP solons were upset. The Senate Judiciary Committee had not followed the lead of the House in adopting an "enforcement only" immigration bill. The committee had reported out a sensible and comprehensive immigration bill that includes border security measures, a guest worker program, and, for illegal immigrants already here, a path towards earned legalization and citizenship. California representative Dana Rohrabacher decried the Senate's guest worker proposal as "the foul odor that's coming out of the United States...

2006 vs. 2016

No one will remember 2006 as one of our nation's greatest years. But how are we doing now compared to then? By many measures, not nearly so well. The economy grew faster in 2006 than it has in any year since. That year, real gross domestic product increased by a modest 2.7 percent, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. That was down from the 3.8 percent growth of 2004 and the 3.3 percent growth of 2005. But real GDP has not grown by more than 2.5 percent in any year since 2006. The last recession began in December 2007...

On October 26, 2006, U.S. President George W. Bush signed the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (Pub.L. 109–367) into law stating, “This bill will help protect the American people. This bill will make our borders more secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform." The bill was introduced on Sep. 13, 2006 by Peter T. King (R-NY). In the House of Representatives, the Fence Act passed 283 -138 on September 14, 2006. On September 29, 2006 – the Fence Act passed in the Senate 80 -19. The Secure Fence Act of 2006’s goal is to help secure America’s borders...

What If 2006 Model Isn't Enough for Democrats?

It can often be useful for elections analysts to find a previous election to cite as a model for the current one. For example, Brendan Nyhan was fond of referring to 2012 as “Bizarro 2004,” where the Democratic campaign ran roughly on the same trajectory as the Republican campaign of just eight years earlier (and even concluded with a similar margin). There are a number of potential analogues for this year’s midterms, but my mind keeps wandering back to 2006. Here’s the interesting thing: A year like 2006 might not be enough for the Democrats to take the House. The...

"Iran and Syria are in the same boat," said former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani during a visit to Damascus on April 12. In likening the two countries' predicaments, Mr. Rafsanjani continued, "The enemies of Syria are trying to increase the pressure, but the resistance of the Syrian people will continue." He is right: The Syrian people are resisting more than ever before. But the new wave of resistance isn't what Mr. Rafsanjani had in mind. Two weeks before Mr. Rafsanjani's visit, Syrian military intelligence arrested 51-year-old Internet journalist and human-rights activist Mohammed Ghanem, most likely because of his work at...

Movie Review: "When a young Jewish orphan girl named Hadassah became the Queen of Persia sometime around 481 B.C., she had no idea that, as Queen Esther, she would be used by God to prevent the extinction of her entire race. It’s a story found in the Old Testament Book of Esther, and it’s one of the Bible’s most treasured sources of inspiration and comfort since it brilliantly illustrates God’s divine providence and His personal care and protection for His Chosen People". One Night With the King, then, has a lot to live up to.

Yesterday, Cortney covered new comments from John Conyers' (D-MI) former lawyer, Melanie Sloan, regarding his alleged sexual misconduct. But a 2006 CNN interview with Sloan and two other former staffers shows that he regularly established a pattern of inappropriateness, borderline negligence, and a hostile environment for his staffers and subordinates. As reported yesterday, Conyers on at least one occasion placed Sloan in an uncomfortable and lewd situation. “While she says she was not sexually harassed, she describes to the Detroit Free Press being verbally harassed and made uncomfortable on a number of occasions. She detailed Conyers bizarre behavior at one meeting...

Cities like Dallas, Texas are benefiting from homebuyers from high-tax states with deep pockets. Real estate executive Rogers Healy weighs in on the 'new reality' of the business. U.S. home prices in February rose at their fastest pace in 15 years as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the urge to move from urban apartments to suburban homes. Home prices climbed 12% year over year in February, according to the national Case-Shiller index, making for the fastest increase since February 2006. Prices are now 29% above their 2006 peak. "The housing market is running full steam ahead," said Selma Hepp, deputy chief...

We didn’t lock down almost the entire country in 1968/69, 1957, or 1949-1952, or even during 1918. But in a terrifying few days in March 2020, it happened to all of us, causing an avalanche of social, cultural, and economic destruction that will ring through the ages. There was nothing normal about it all. We’ll be trying to figure out what happened to us for decades hence. How did a temporary plan to preserve hospital capacity turn into two-to-three months of near-universal house arrest that ended up causing worker furloughs at 256 hospitals, a stoppage of international travel, a 40%...

Abortifacient contraceptive use among U.S. women has almost doubled in the last eight years, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report released last week. The report said that 7.2 percent of U.S. women ages 15 to 44 confirmed using long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC), meaning either intrauterine devices (IUD) or contraceptive hormonal implants, in the month they were asked between 2011 and 2013. This represents an increase from 3.8 percent of women who answered the same during the period between 2006 and 2010, according to details of the study reported by Yahoo News. Abortifacient contraceptives end unborn...

The German author Henryk M. Broder recently told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant (12 October) that young Europeans who love freedom, better emigrate. Europe as we know it will no longer exist 20 years from now. Whilst sitting on a terrace in Berlin, Broder pointed to the other customers and the passers-by and said melancholically: "We are watching the world of yesterday." Europe is turning Muslim. As Broder is sixty years old he is not going to emigrate himself. "I am too old," he said. However, he urged young people to get out and "move to Australia or New Zealand....

2006: IF ARNOLD SUPPORTED MCLINTOCK for LT. Gov.

McLintock, the conservative, could have saved California had he won. All it would take is for Arnold to resign halfway into his 2nd term(2008) saying it's impossible to govern-forgiven. Instead he kept his distance and ended up governing as a liberal. McLintock lost and the rest is history. Shame on Arnold. He could have gone back to making movies and be held in high esteem by the GOP.

Fitzgerald: What is the cost? Jihad Watch Board Vice President Hugh Fitzgerald assesses the costs of the jihad for Western governments and taxpayers: What is the actual expense caused by the large-scale presence of Muslims in the Lands of the Infidels, which so many are taught to believe are enemy lands, so that they are now settling deep within those enemy lines? And once there, they are entrusted with the task of transforming it, slowly or quickly, and making it a place where, eventually, Islam can dominate and Muslims rule. What is the cost this has entailed for Western...

‘Elite schools shamelessly educating the enemy.’ MAYBE Yale isn’t the only elite university with a “Taliban Man” problem. Yale is taking flak for making a student out of an ex-Taliban spokesman. Sayed Rahmatullah Hashemi once toured America defending the hideous regime that pulled out women’s fingernails for the “crime” of wearing nail polish. The Taliban also barred girls from school, banned women from working, stoned adulterers to death and used its soccer stadium for mass executions. ... Yale has declined to admit Afghan women who were Taliban victims: It snubbed a request from the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women (IEAW.org),...

Proponents support voting YES because: It is obvious there is no more defining issue in our Nation today than stopping illegal immigration. The most basic obligation of any government is to secure the Nation's borders. One issue in which there appears to be a consensus...

Asmin Amin Tariq, a Muslim convert of Asian descent, was a security guard at Heathrow, where the explosives allegedly were to have been carried onto planes bound for the U.S. After Tariq’s arrest, his employer, Jet Airways, suspended him. (Here’s a pdf profile of the guy.) After shooting his hated father in the face — the...
