ACLJ Offers to Defend Any School That Displays "God Bless America"

October 9, 2001

(Washington, DC) - The American Center for Law and Justice, an international public interest law firm, said today it is offering legal services to defend a California school district that has been told by the ACLU to remove a sign that includes the message "God Bless America." Click here to read the story. At the same time, the ACLJ announced today it is offering to defend any school district or student organization in America that desires to display "God Bless America" in schools.

"At a time when America desires to exhibit patriotism, the ACLU sees fit to undermine the constitution by attempting to exert a heavy hand of censorship," said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ. "The ACLU is out of step with the law and is reacting in a manner that is totally absurd and irresponsible. The message 'God Bless America' is constitutionally protected speech and the ACLU's legal analysis is both skewed and very troubling."

Sekulow said the ACLJ is sending a letter to the Rocklin Unified School District in California offering its legal services to defend the display of a sign that includes the message "God Bless America" posted in front of an elementary school. The message was placed on a marquee outside the Breen Elementary School following the September 11th terrorist attacks. The ACLU contends the words "God Bless America" reflect what the ACLU calls a "hurtful, divisive message" and has sent a letter to the school district alleging the message violates the U.S. and California constitutions and demanding that it be removed. The school district has said the sign will not be taken down, despite the ACLU's demand.

Sekulow said in addition to offering legal services to the Rocklin Unified School District, the ACLJ is offering legal services to defend the display of "God Bless America" to all school districts and student organizations nationwide. The ACLJ is a public interest law firm and does not charge any client for its legal services. A memo outlining why "God Bless America" is constitutionally protected speech is posted on the ACLJ web site at www.aclj.org.

Sekulow said the ACLU is simply wrong in its assessment that the message "God Bless America" violates the separation of church and state.

"There is no legal reason why a school district cannot display a sign that says 'God Bless America' if it so desires," said Sekulow. "The message 'God Bless America' is constitutionally protected speech and does not violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. In fact, it is clear that the ACLU is attempting to censor a California school district by pressuring it to remove the sign. We will defend any school district or student organization that faces legal action by the ACLU for displaying the message 'God Bless America.'"

The American Center for Law and Justice is an international public interest law firm that focuses on constitutional issues involving pro-family, pro-life, and pro-liberty cases. The ACLJ is headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA and its web site address is www.aclj.org.

A polite way of saying the Communists at the ACLU are just wrong.

I'd like to stand outside their (the ACLU's) HQ with anice big sign that says "F*CK the Absolutely Clueless Liberals Union" If they try and stop me, maybe I'll see if they'll sue themselves. ;)

These ACLU weenies really tork me off .... I used to work with them many years ago back when they were performing legitimate services to represent minority voices in civil rights matters. [For example, I worked on a case involving the burning of books by a small school district in Indiana. Among the burned books were great works by Mark Twain and William Faulkner. The ACLU got the censored books put back on the school library shelves] ...

By the 1980's, it became apparent to me the ACLU had adopted a purely Marxist philosophy aimed at destroying educational institutions and fermenting useless conflicts....

The ACLU today serves no useful societal purpose whatsoever.

"Among the burned books were great works by Mark Twain"

Isn't it amazing that Mark Twain's works manage to be banned no matter who is in charge?

The ACLJ was formed to counter the ACLU. They're good guys, and Pat Robertson's the founder. For those who ask what Pat Robertson has done for the conservative cause, he started Regency University with its Constitutional Law and Journalism schools (they aren't liberal), and the highly effective and downright decent ACLJ.

How about urging your local public school to display 'God Bless America' signs?

Let's play smash-mouth against these bullies.

Here's a start. There's endless info on the ACLU. It isn't pretty.
ACLU, general info:
The inclusion of the ACLU's Nadine Strossen as one of the CFR panel's three members is itself evidence of the Council's transparent hypocrisy. The Communist Party itself could not come close to accomplishing for the Kremlin what the closet Reds in the ACLU and their dupes have achieved. Since its inception in the early years of this century, the ACLU has led the revolutionary vanguard in attacking all police and intelligence agencies and providing assistance to communists, anarchists, terrorists, and subversives of every stripe, virtually without exception. Besides longtime executive director and founder Roger Baldwin, other Communist Party members of the organization's original executive board included William Z. Foster, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, and Louis Budenz

Good idea. Many of them have no clue what's legal and almost always settle for the bad (PC) choice. Our local school board will not appreciate this article. E-mailing all the members. (^:

I loathe the America-haters and evil-doers...how about this...In Lexington , KY., Mayor Pam Miller had the flag removed from in front of the City Hall, after it had proudly flown there , daily, since 24 Sept. 2000. The Kentucky Vietnam Memorial is the only Vietmam Memorial, in the nation, where the POW/MIA Flag does not fly daily. When we asked Mayor Miller why the flag was taken down she stated that some people had complained and the flag was staying down. She refused to tell us who complained and why. Shealso said she didn't care how many e-mails, phone calls or letters she received it would stay down, because she was not running for re-election and didn't care.

I think you mean the ACLU. The ACLJ originated to fight the ACLU's unconstitutional, anti-Christian influence on our schools, courts, country. They're good people.

Do you have Mayor Miller's e-mail address? She may not care but her constituents will. Do you know the e-mail address for Lexington's newspaper? Freepers will help. (^:

Does anyone think that the ACLU would sue if a school put up a sign that read "God damn America" instead of "God Bless America"?

They would probably represent that schools right to do it.

Ping. They would allow: "ACLU, Re-Making America Over in Our Own Image." Anti-American dopes. They actually once put in their literature (heard this on the radio, but can't find the source) that it's good to take advantage of the situation in times of national crises. The less America pays attention to the ACLU, the more they're able to get away with in court.
