my windows 2000 professional and advanced server instructor said xp is stable because it's built on nt-2000 technology, but that it will have bugs. if's that's all, then i'll buy it.

I have suspicions that XP was co-designed by the NSA to help the overloaded Carnivore system. Seriously though, I don't have alot against microsoft, but XP has just too much BS for me to stomach. I'll pass till someone else makes a decent GUI that is compatable with all the software out there.

I can find "open sockets" down at the local bar, what does that mean for us life-long windows addicts? As in we cant use any other OS.

In my book, XP stands for eXpect no Privacy.
I'm serious. Every piece of software will check and double check the microsoft O.S. serial numbers almost constantly, making it impossible to ever be anonymous, especially when you go online.
Your XP software will disable itself whenever your system configuration changes, and it will have to 'phone home' to Redmond before it starts working again. Any and all communications over the 'net using an XP system will be easily traceable back to you.
i.e., No Privacy

Besides, I just changed from 98 to win2000. I'm happy with it so far. Win2K has been more than stable enough for my needs. The only drawback is that I can't play Redneck Rampage on it (much to my wife's delight!)

For an engineer, you're remarkably ill-informed. None of what you said has the slightest basis in truth.

You have convinced me, I have to go with Windows 2000 (my gut feeling anyway). I want an easy to use OS without somebody tapping me on the shoulder (or looking over it) constantly.
