So, all you new FReepers. How exactly did you come to find FR? Mentions on TV? Links on the net?
I understand the 2000 Election surge. I was part of it. People were scavenging the net for political forums and news sources.
But what was it about the 11th that brought all you guys?

I can only speak for myself....but I have been lurking for over a year...reading, learning...but not ready to take the plunge and learn enough html to post. By 9/16 I had to be part of the discussions...so I took the plunge. I bet others have similar stories.

Same goes for me. I got into it hot and heavy when Chandra turned up missing, but I lurked rather than choosing to post. Now I spend every waking hour here, and it only made sense to register.

I began visiting this site because it's an excellent source of breaking news. Hundreds or thousands of people rapidly posting articles of interest from news sources all over the world for interesting stories make a great reporting machine. Way better than Drudge, for example.
After September 11, the site got more interesting to me because it began to focus on the war on terrorism. Then I couldn't resist responding to some of the articles and comments. So I signed up.

Same goes for me. I've been lurking for over a year... actually, you guys can be intimidating, given how many of you are informed, articulate and well educated. I enjoyed the wit and information, and my fave, the picture-only replies, but never felt the need to come out and play. :)
I needed to talk to like-minded people after what the creatures did to us on the day I don't even like to mention. So, here I am.

Well, I'm a member since
Welcome home, southern rock! |
member since November 25th, 2000 |

because I attended a Times Square election protest in support of George W. Bush with other FReepers. I signed up as soon as I got home. The next day, JimRob posted a thread saying that Nov. 25, 2000 was the biggest new member sign up day in FR history. For what it's worth. |
To: JD86
I lurked for at least a couple months before actually signing up. But that was a long time ago.

I was on another board, comprised of people who had originally met at Court TV (CTV), and other legal/crime message boards. We had a mix of political views. When the WTC attack happened, the people over at CTV -- within 24 hours(!) -- got very nasty and abusive about President Bush. (For those of you who like to debate liberal idiots, I suggest you check out the CTV "Assault on America" message board!) Although we had an agreement on our own board to avoid politics, it didn't last. It was then that one of our members told me & another conservative member about Free Republic. So, basically, all 3 of us have left our old board and sworn our allegiance to Free Republic! All hail Jim Robinson!

So, all you new FReepers. How exactly did you come to find FR? Mentions on TV? Links on the net? I was desperate for some decent news radio to listen to during the day at work in order to stay in touch with everything that was happening and stumbled into Hugh Hewitt's radio show. He had the link listed on his website and mentioned it several times, so violà here I am.
I think I'm one of probably many, many people who was jolted awake on 9/11 into involving myself more with my country, political issues and international affairs.
I've always been a Bush supporter and a conservative, but I didn't get that involved in keeping track of the political scene until 9/11. Now I'm kind of ashamed at how little I seemed to care about all of this before...

By 9/16 I had to be part of the discussions...so I took the plunge. I bet others have similar stories. Yes, my story is similar. I began lurking here during the Florida mess. I quickly became hooked, but I resisted the urge to join up. I had all kinds of rationalizations for not joining. I told myself that I really didn't have the time, or that learning html would be a hassle, or that I'd break some unwritten rule and end up alienating everyone. But after 9/11 I saw the patriotism shining forth on this site, and it weakened my resistance. When the war started I felt that I needed to be a part of this place
