The BBC's Director General George Entwistle has stepped down tonight in wake of Newsnight sex abuse scandal. He made the statement outside New Broadcasting House alongside Lord Patten, the chair of the BBC Trust. The explosive announcement came hours after the editor-in-chief was humiliated live on air by one of his own presenters today over the Newsnight report that wrongly implicated former Tory treasurer Lord McAlpine in child abuse.

The European Commission and top German politicians are becoming increasingly exasperated with both France and Britain as the summit in Brussels to determine the EU budget for the seven-year period from 2014 to 2020 approaches. Both countries have been insistent on getting their way as member states position themselves for what promise to be difficult talks—and both London and Paris have threatened to veto the budget if it doesn't meet their expectations. In response, European Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger, Germany's representative on the EU's executive body, has harshly criticized the two countries. …

At 4:45 a.m. today, after 21-hours of non-stop ballot copying and counting, Democratic candidate Patrick Murphy defeated Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West for the District 18 congressional seat. The final tally — still considered unofficial — put Murphy ahead of West by 2,429 votes. Overall, Murphy captured 166,799 votes to West’s 164,370 in District 18, which spans portions of Martin, St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties. An automatic recount is triggered by a margin of 0.5 percent. Murphy’s lead gives him a .7 percent advantage. All ballots in Martin and St. Lucie counties have been counted.

Remember World War One? My grandfather had fought in that war and it seemed like a century ago ... and it was. In two years will be the centennial of the start of the First World War (1914 - 1918). At that time, it was called the Great War, the World War, the War to End all Wars. Only after the start of World War Two was it called World War One. (First World War.com - A Multimedia History of World War One) We see a legacy of the Great War this coming Monday. Signing the Armistice to cease the...

The leader of the free world let his emotions flow this week, crying as he thanked staffers the day after his re-election. The tears of joy were humanizing, but it begs the question: where are the tears of heartache for those who are suffering? Where are the tears for the 23 million Americans out of work who worry about putting food on the table, the Hurricane Sandy victims who are still without power or without a home, and where were the tears as the four flag-draped coffins returned from Benghazi? Our leader is able to witness the country’s worst heartbreak...

Outgoing CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus’ resignation over an extramarital affair was reportedly held until after Tuesday’s election to avoid “potential embarrassment” for President Barack Obama, according to Newsmax. FBI agents learned of the affair while monitoring Petraeus’ emails out of concern that the woman, Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell, may have had access to his personal account, the Associated Press reported. But an FBI source told Ronald Kessler, the author and journalist who broke the Secret Service prostitution scandal, that rather than having Petraeus resign immediately, the decision was made to hold it until after the election for political purposes:...

President Barack Obama is spending his first Saturday after winning reelection on the golf course. Today's outing is to the course on Andrews Air Force Base. "Motorcade arrived at Andrews Air Force Base at 11:01 am after an uneventful ride," the pool report reads. "President Obama is playing golf with three White House aides: Eugene Kang, Joe Paulson and trip director Marvin Nicholson, according to a White House official. Pool is holding at the Andrews fast food court for the next few hours." Toward the end of the campaign, Obama seemed to have eased off his golf game. He did,...

(RNS) Last month, Lauren Anderson Youngblood, communications manager for the Secular Coalition for America, approached Broderick Johnson, a senior adviser to the Obama campaign, as they both left a conference on religion and the election. The SCA is an umbrella group representing 11 nontheistic organizations. So who, Youngblood asked Johnson, could she reach out to with their concerns about civil rights, access to health care and education? “He said, ‘We don’t view you as a constituency,’” Youngblood said. “He said, ‘We don’t do outreach to that community.’” After Tuesday's election, that may soon change. According to a Pew Forum on...

“How You ‘Mite Give’” (Mark 12:38-44)Today I want to talk to you about how you give. Notice, I said “how you give,” rather than “how much you give.” There’s a difference. How you give is much more important than how much you give--although, how you give will almost assuredly affect how much you give. I’m talking here about what you give in the offering plate and how you do it. What sort of attitude and motivation do you have in your giving? From God’s perspective, that is what’s most important when you put that envelope into the offering plate. A...

There is hardly an issue about which Germans as so united as they are by their desire to see America on its knees. It unites both the left and the right. Wherever they look, they see decay, a lack of culture and ignorance. … The criticism of America has always been a bit infantile. One is familiar with the theory from psychoanalysis, when people talk about transference, or when suppressed feelings or emotions are overcome by projecting them onto others. … The childish excitement over Obama, that once again took hold over Germans during this election—fully 93 percent of the...

The collapse of the dazzling career of CIA Director David H. Petraeus was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him, according to three senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode. The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and a Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.

Drew Rosenberg became a victim of San Francisco's immigration policies on Nov. 16, 2010. The second-year law student was riding his motorcycle in rush-hour traffic when a car driven by an unlicensed driver made a left turn and hit him. That evening, Don Rosenberg of Westlake Village received the phone call every parent dreads. His precious son was dead. Then another nightmare unfolded. As Rosenberg investigated driver Roberto Galo's background, he discovered that San Francisco's policies regarding immigrants have served as an enabler for dangerous drivers.

In looking at the voting data from Richmond, Virginia, an observer is struck by a few things. First is that Mitt Romney and Barack Obama were running neck-and-neck for the first several precincts. Even in heavily democratic precincts, Romney was still garnering around 25-30% of the vote. Then, all of a sudden, all in order, starting with Precinct 213, Obama received: 90.30% of the vote, then 95.91%, then 89.62%, then 94.68%, then 97.49%, then 94.16%, then 95.09%. Before these Obama numbers began, Romney had gotten over 30% of the vote, and after they finished, Romney shot back up to 23%....
