Continents and oceans in the northern hemisphere began to warm with industrial-era fossil fuel emissions nearly 200 years ago, pushing back the origins of human-induced climate change to the mid-19th century. The first signs of warming from the rise in greenhouse gases which came hand-in-hand with the Industrial Revolution appear as early as 1830 in the tropical oceans and the Arctic, meaning that climate change witnessed today began about 180 years ago. Researchers in Australia found evidence for the early onset of warming after trawling through 500 years of data on tree rings, corals and ice cores that together form...

Church guards in Egypt shot dead a knife-wielding attacker who fatally stabbed one of their own men at a Coptic church Wednesday morning. According to the Associated Press (AP), Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported that an unnamed assailant attacked one of the church guards at the Virgin Mary Church in Nozha suburb and stabbed him to death. The church’s other security officials then gunned down the killer. Though the killer’s motives for the attack remain unclear as investigations continue, this follows a spike of sectarian attacks against the country’s religious minorities. Coptic Christians frustrated with the spate of religious-driven...

Peter Hart, a Democrat and one of the country’s most respected pollsters, admitted on Friday that Donald Trump can win the White House if he has “one sane month” on the campaign trail. After conducting a focus group of Wisconsin voters last night for the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center, Hart appeared on MSNBC’s “MTP Daily” and said voters “don’t trust Clinton to give them an honest answer and they don’t trust Trump to be a safe leader.” When host Chuck Todd asked Hart which candidate had the best chance of winning the election and undecided voters after...

The latest 14,900 emails recovered by the FBI came from the 33,000 that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton deleted on the grounds that they were personal rather than work-related. Oddly, one of the topics discussed in many of them was Benghazi, which would seem to be "work-related" and as such legally required to be preserved and archived. Hillary for President campaign manager Robbie Mook urged that "we not jump to hasty conclusions. If you will recall, Secretary Clinton admitted she authored many emails dealing with planning her daughter's wedding. While we all know about the attack on Ambassador Stevens that...

The Donald Trump campaign has released a new mobile app on Friday that encourages the Republican presidential nominee’s supporters to both interact with and compete against one another. The America First app serves as sort of a hybrid between social network and game, in which points are earned through actions such as checking in at a Trump-Pence rally, donating money to the campaign, and declaring support for “Team Trump” on social media....

Just observed a vehicle with bright flashing yellow lights proceeding at about 5 mph spraying a fog or mist at about a 45 degree up angle on my street at 1:41 am. Spray mist went up about 8-9 feet above ground level. I listen to the local news extensively and there has not been any mention of this activity on any radio station in any form.

The number of active TB cases in the eight county Idaho public health district that includes Twin Falls jumped 500 percent between 2011 and 2012. One case of active TB was diagnosed in the South Central Public Health District that includes Twin Falls in 2011, and six active TB cases were diagnosed there in 2012, the year Chobani opened the world’s largest yogurt factory in the small southern Idaho city with the help of $54 million in federal, state, and local financial assistance. Almost everything I read about Donald Trump these days is negative. Writers on the right have been almost as critical as writers on the left. Is there nothing that can be said about Trump that is positive? I think there is. Since his nomination by the Republican Party, Donald Trump has made a number of serious policy speeches. In each case he is saying things that no other Republican presidential candidate has said. What he is saying is worth listening to. On foreign policy, he has basically noted that our entire approach, from NATO to military bases, is based on...

A pair of dangerously close encounters between the Iranian and U.S. navies in the Persian Gulf this week have raised fresh questions about Tehran’s intentions, a year after Obama administration officials hoped the much-touted nuclear deal would moderate the behavior of the Islamic republic and its military. Iran’s military is going to “warn” and “confront” any foreign ships entering its territorial waters, the nation’s top defense official said Thursday, after four Iranian fast-attack craft buzzed the guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, and the USS Squall, a coastal patrol ship, fired three warning shots a...

“I look at white silence in these issues (social injustice involving an African-American) as violence,” Thomas said. “White silence is the equivalent to violence in these issues. When you’re not standing up and you’re not speaking out for your brother, right, you and I are brothers regardless of skin color, and this is where this whole race thing, this constructed race thing really separates us in this country, and that’s what we need to get underneath because any type of mistreatment of you or oppression of you I have to stand up and speak against that.”

Nobody asked for fried-chicken-scented sunscreen, but KFC made it anyway. A quick survey of sunscreens reveals they usually come bottled with scents like "sunshine," "coconut," "cucumber," "mango" and "gentle breeze." These fragrances evoke thoughts of summer, beaches and outdoor fun. KFC, the global fried-chicken fast-food franchise, decided sunscreen should evoke thoughts of bubbling hot oil, dead birds and 11 herbs and spices. On Monday, KFC introduced Extra Crispy Sunscreen, a reference to a style of chicken, not the kind of skin the sunscreen will leave you with if you use it. The sunscreen smells like fried chicken, but it...

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown took a strong stand against coal on Friday, approving an East Bay lawmaker's bill to ban state funding for coal-related projects. In signing state Sen. Loni Hancock's bill, the governor also praised the Oakland City Council for voting to ban transportation of the ore through its city and encouraged other cities to do the same. "Other localities should follow suit -- and the state should, too -- to reduce and, ultimately, eliminate the shipment of coal through all California ports, Brown wrote in a signing message.
