“Opening the Scriptures, Breaking the Bread” (Luke 24:13-35) One of my favorite paintings is one we happen to have hanging in the hallway here at St. Matthew’s. I’ve brought it forward this morning, because it goes with the Gospel reading for today. The painting is called, in German, “Gang nach Emmaus,” “The Road to Emmaus,” by a 19th-century Swiss artist, Robert Zünd. I love this painting, because it really activates my imagination. You’re looking from a distance at Jesus walking with two disciples on the road to Emmaus, while Jesus is opening the Scriptures to them. You wish you could...

Richard Simmons is back! The beloved health and fitness guru, 68, is speaking directly with fans for the very first time since mysteriously vanishing from the spotlight three years ago. Simmons, who was hospitalized on Monday for "severe indigestion," took to his personal Facebook page on Wednesday to share a hopeful message with his fans. "Hello to everyone who has shown concern for me and sent their good wishes. You will never know how much it means to me," the reclusive diet and exercise expert wrote next to a 2014 photo of himself....

CNN says automation is to blame for America’s manufacturing job losses; and what’s worse, there’s more to come—and no, it has absolutely nothing to do with bad trade deals like NAFTA, nor China’s predatory trading strategy. Nope. Nothing to see here people. Move along. Automation is bad, and your jobs are never coming back. This view was echoed recently by the Guardian too. Of course, this is all just fake news—CNN has to earn its reputation somehow. In reality, automation is only half the story: if you look at its impact relative to output, you’ll see that automation doesn’t really...

I've got Sirius in the car and believe it or not I listen to MSNBC near all the time. Do it to reinforce my disgust with the liberal left and my happiness with Trump's policies. But I said near all the time and when I can't take it any more I click on the USB drive which has over 3100 songs. Don't have them all memorized and when this one came on,,,,,,,, had to listen to it three times before I went on to the next song. If you've never heard the 4th rendezvous its pretty catchy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCLEZM_N0K8

Robert Ménard, mayor of the town of Beziers in southern France, has been fined 2,000 euros for "hate speech." The "hate speech" consisted of his observation that in a school in the center of his town more than 90% of the students are Muslim. Judge Maurice Cador called Ménard's remarks "extraordinarily insensitive toward Muslims. His defense relied upon the assertion that he spoke the truth. Under our laws truth is not a valid defense. We concede that his statement was factually accurate. However, it is the government's policy to not call attention to the rising proportion of resident aliens in...

    • IBM, Amazon, SoftBank, and Alibaba all made high-profile pledges to create U.S. jobs • Progress has been mixed, with Amazon hiring the most so far. The first few weeks of Donald Trump's presidency were flooded with jobs announcements with a common theme: bringing jobs back to America. Now, 100 days into the Trump administration, where are those jobs? What positions have been filled and which companies have followed up with real hiring? While some companies were eager to provide big, tweetable numbers a few months ago, progress has been a little slower. For example: IBM. Shortly after the election...

Boulder - Remember that unsuccessful attempt in the legislature to toughen penalties for vandalizing oil and gas equipment? Child’s play. It turns out the author of a letter to the editor in Boulder’s Daily Camera that got a national media mention last week — for appearing to endorse outright violence against fracking operations — is the author of a pending statewide ballot issue to hike Colorado’s severance tax on oil and gas production. Reached by phone today, Andrew O’Connor, of Lafayette, unapologetically reiterated his hardline stance ... “I wouldn’t have a problem with a sniper shooting one of the workers”...

President Trump begins his second 100 days with major campaign promises held hostage by a stubborn Republican Congress even as GOP voters show faith in his leadership. The repeal of Obamacare was on life support after legislation pushed by the White House was shelved Friday for a second time in weeks amid Republican opposition in the House. The logjam denied the president a key legislative victory in his first 100 days. The prospects for tax reform were equally uncertain after Republicans two days earlier announced opposition to critical elements of Trump's blueprint. The president was even denied money for construction...

Famous models on yachts! Exclusive island once owned by Pablo Escobar! Blink-182! Those were just some of the selling points for Fyre Festival, a supposedly opulent music weekend that was scheduled to begin in the Bahamas on Thursday, with “first-class culinary experiences and a luxury atmosphere,” along with performances by G.O.O.D. Music, Major Lazer, Migos and more. Promoted by Instagram influencers including Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski as a never-before-seen V.I.P. event, the gathering — with weekend ticket packages starting around $1,200 and topping six-figures with extras — was supposed to compete in an increasingly elaborate landscape of...

As President Donald Trump hits his 100th day in office Saturday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has booked the best performance in the postwar era under a first-term president when measured from Election Day through the 100th day in office, according to Dow Jones data. The Dow DJIA, -0.19% has rallied 14.22% since Trump’s stunning Nov. 8 election victory over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton after a campaign promising a raft of Wall Street–friendly policies, including tax cuts, deregulation and a boost in infrastructure spending. The Archdiocese of Boston has opened a new church. That news drew headline coverage, in a city that has become more accustomed to stories about church closings. To be perfectly honest, the news stories are a bit misleading. There have been a few new churches opened in Boston in the past 60 years, but they have been new buildings rather than new parishes: new churches that were constructed to replace buildings that had been destroyed by fire or by the wrecking ball. As a matter of fact, that’s also the case with the latest building, the church of Our Lady...

USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group has arrived in waters near the Korean peninsula, where it will join the USS Michigan, a guided missile submarine that docked in South Korea on Tuesday. Upon arrival today, the carrier kicked off a joint drill with the South Korean navy. A defence ministry spokesman said: “Immediately after the aircraft carrier arrived in the Sea of Japan, South Korea and the US strike forces launched a drill from 6pm Saturday.” The drill came hours after the North launched a ballistic missile in apparent defiance of a concerted US push for tougher international sanctions to...

There is social justice in Cuba. Nope. The dictatorship has institutionalized an apartheid between foreigners and Communist Party elites — Cuba's 1 percent — and "ordinary" Cubans. How? Through two currencies, a valuable one for the former and a worthless one for the latter, who are mostly black and brown.
