ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey agreed on Thursday to pause its offensive in Syria for five days to let Kurdish forces withdraw from a “safe zone” Ankara had sought to capture, in a deal hailed by Washington but which Turkish leaders cast as a complete victory. The truce was announced by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence after talks in Ankara with Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan, and was swiftly hailed by President Donald Trump, who said it would save “millions of lives”. But if implemented it would achieve all the main objectives Turkey announced when it launched the assault eight days ago: control...

Nigel Farage yesterday attacked Boris Johnson's deal and said that he would rather delay leaving the European Union than accept the Prime Minister's new treaty. The Brexit Party leader also came under fire after attacking Jean-Claude Juncker for saying the EU should not agree to delay the UK's withdrawal from the bloc beyond October 31. Mr. Johnson's deal offers a far harder Brexit than May's deal but falls short of the red lines set by hard Brexiteers like Mr. Farage

Low jobless rates and rising incomes are helping to fatten state coffers across the U.S. Revenue from sales, personal and corporate taxes is on the rise --the best growth since before the Great Recession. States can expect healthy tax revenues for at least the next several quarters as low unemployment continues, incomes slowly rise, inflation increases modestly and higher energy prices generate more income for states with severance taxes. But the outlook for individual states is varied, with several regions facing big challenges. The trade war with China is battering the agriculture industry in the Midwest and the prairie states...

We are living through a phantasmagoric psychodrama generated by the dishonest national political press. . . snip House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff — who is usually lying when his lips aren’t moving and always is when they are — says we will not be hearing from a non-whistleblowing leaker, to give his hearsay evidence of a conversation that any person in the world can read and see has no legal implications whatever. . . snip The Democrats are stuck with this clunker. Maybe Speaker Pelosi wanted to humiliate the young Marxist congresswomen and Mr. Schiff and the porcine Jerry...

On Thursday at her weekly press briefing, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said the American people were “not going to decide” if President Donald Trump should be impeached. When asked about the impeachment timeline, Pelosi said, “I keep saying to people, impeachment is about the truth and the Constitution of the United States. Any other issues that you have, disapproving of the way the president has dealt with Syria, whatever the subject is, reluctance, the cowardice to do something about gun violence, the cruelty of not wanting to help our Dreamers and transgender people, the denial about the climate crisis...

Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat on the Intelligence and Judiciary committees, reacted to acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney's remarks that aid to Ukraine was in fact tied to President Trump’s wish for an investigation into the 2016 election. "He co-signed the President's confession, I guess," he told reporters as he left the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility at Capitol Hill. Swalwell reiterated that Trump still deserves a fair process even though he believes the President has confessed. "We have a confession from the President," Swalwell said. "When a suspect confesses you can reduce the number of witnesses you...

... McConnell, who has largely refrained from making grandiose public statements on the House impeachment effort in recent days, briefed GOP senators during a luncheon on Wednesday on the impeachment process via a PowerPoint presentation and urged them to gear up for an impeachment trial in the Senate. He expects this process could heat up next month, around Thanksgiving. ...

Climate change activists calling themselves “Extinction Rebellion†have been punishing London commuters for the past ten days. The stated goal of the protest was to “peacefully shut down all roads into Westminster in Central London and non-violently disrupt the government until our leaders agree to TAKE EMERGENCY ACTION NOW.†Today, things got decidedly less peaceful when a handful of activists climbed on top of a commuter train in the midst of the morning rush hour. People who were trying to get to work dragged the protesters off the train. From the BBC: Extinction Rebellion activists climbed on to trains...

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney acknowledged that he held up $390 million in security aide for Ukraine in order to pressure the country into pursuing a 2016 election probe being demanded by President Trump. Trump and top administration officials have vigorously denied any 'quid pro quo' with Ukraine following a whistleblower's report that the White House was demanding a probe of the Bidens as well as Trump's conspiracy theory that the DNC server might be in Ukraine's possession. In a rare White House briefing, Mulvaney denied any knowledge of a company linked to Hunter Biden – but...

Commissioner Adam Silver told TMZ Sports that’s he’s bothered so many people think the NBA knuckled under and apologized to China over Daryl Morey’s tweet supporting Hong Kong’s freedom. The initial statement read, “We recognize that the views expressed by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey have deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China, which is regrettable.†“While Daryl has made it clear that his tweet does not represent the Rockets or the NBA, the values of the league support individuals’ education themselves and sharing their views on matters important to them.†Silver explained to TMZ...

I am lately struck by the similarities between the machinations that removed Nixon and what is going on now. We are all so indoctrinated about "Watergate" that we rarely remark on the oddity of a man who won 60% of the popular vote and >500 electoral votes being successfully subverted and eventually forced out by an alliance of the Deep State (CIA, FBI), the media, and especially the Congress. But it IS very odd that it happened, whatever we all may think now, we may all be missing the main story, and since the very same players (CIA, FBI), media,...

Mitch McConnell said Thursday that he wants 'something even stronger' in the Senate than the House's resolution formally opposing Donald Trump's troop withdrawal from northern Syria last week. The Senate Majority Leader said he was 'encouraged' by the House, including 129 Republican members, voting to condemn the president's highly contested decision. 'I believe it's important that we make a strong forward-looking strategic statement. For that reason my preference would be for something even stronger than the resolution that the House passed yesterday which has some serious weaknesses,' McConnell said from the Senate floor Thursday. The vote Wednesday – where more...

There is growing and bipartisan alarm among Americans about the “bad acts” of Big Tech companies. For far too long, Big Tech has gotten away with profiting from human trafficking, revenge-porn, the opioid epidemic and drug addiction, terrorism, and other forms of human misery, while engaging in egregious business practices like snooping, spying, political bias against conservatives, employee abuses, and anticompetitive conduct. Big Tech has engaged in this deplorable conduct largely free from any real oversight from Republicans or Democrats in Washington. That’s not surprising, especially if you understand the ways of the DC Swamp. Big Tech is “feeding chickens”...

A man facing eviction from his Northwest Side condo building went on a deadly rampage over the weekend, killing four people in a neighboring apartment as they sat down for dinner before hunting down another neighbor and shooting her in the back of the head as she fled, Cook County prosecutors alleged Monday. Police later found two chilling notes written in Polish in Krysztof Marek’s apartment in the Dunning neighborhood. “Tomorrow!! No Mercy Without any stupid hesitation!!!” prosecutors said one read in part. After prosecutors laid out the dramatic details Monday in the Leighton Criminal Court Building, Judge John Fitzgerald...
