  • Ha, Ha, Stupid Adobe Acrobat, After you deprecated Ctrl-Shift-Tab to move from Bookmarks to Page Thumbnails, feinting Ctrl-Shift-I insert page then esc moves to Page Thumbnails

Programmers can never leave well enough alone. (Think of all the once-great applications programs that had great features that were deprecated.) I don't think it was greed that caused this deprecation of a very usable feature. (When on Bookmark panel, you used to be able to Ctrl-Shift-Tab to go to Page Thumbnails, panel, an essential keyboard shortcut when processing a large volume of pages.) I think it is simply programmers who know nothing about users, who are marketing morons, who have too much time on their hands, on an application that was perfected 20 years ago, so they have to...
  • How NOT to redact a PDF - Nuclear submarine secrets spilled

If you're an organisation that is making public an internal document, you best make sure that you have deleted or blacked out any personal, confidential or actionable information. The act of obscuring the sensitive information is known as "redaction", and - for obvious reasons - needs to be done properly if you care about privacy and avoiding a potentially damaging data leak. In the old days - before PDFs and Word documents - you might have redacted a document with a thick black marker pen, ensuring that anyone who made a photocopy of the document wouldn't be able to see...
  • Email worm traced back to cyber-jihad group

The person responsible for the "Here you have" email worm, which wreaked havoc last week on businesses across the United States, may be part of a cyber-jihad group upset over American military presence in Iraq. The malware author, who uses the handle "iraq_resistance," is believed to be part of the cyber-jihad organization "Brigades of Tariq ibn Ziyad," whose goal is to digitally infiltrate U.S. Army agencies, Joe Stewart, director of malware research at SecureWorks, a network security company, told SCMagazineUS.com on Monday. Researchers concluded this after determining that a worm launched last month, but on a much smaller scale, was...

Trying to find out something about Reader Extensions for Designer 7. I can't figure out (from the Adobe web site) how to obtain this product/software or what it costs (or if it's a free add-on). For those who will ask... I need to make a PDF form where the data can be saved. My understanding is that this functionality came with the CS3 and later (Acrobat 8+) versions (in Acrobat, under Advanced > Extend Features), but I can't find anything correlating to that in Acrobat Pro 7 or Designer 7. Thanks in advance.

Note: The following text is a quote: New Attack Vectors for Adobe JBIG2 Vulnerability added March 10, 2009 at 04:52 pm US-CERT is aware of public reports of two new attack vectors for a vulnerability affecting Adobe Reader and Acrobat. This vulnerability is due to a buffer overflow condition that exists in the way Adobe Acrobat Reader handles JBIG2 Streams. When Adobe Reader is installed on a system, it adds an IFilter that allows applications such as the Windows Indexing Service to index PDF files. If the Windows Indexing Service processes a malicious PDF file stored on the system, the...

Around 2300 B.C., an acrobat was killed during a bizarre sacrificial ceremony in what is now northeastern Syria, according to a new study published in the current issue of the journal Antiquity. Gory evidence of the entertainer's death -- along with the remains of several rare horse-like animals which appear to have been sacrificed as well -- was found in the remains of a building at a site called Tell Brak, which was once the ancient city of Nagar. The findings suggest some ancient cultures may have sacrificed well-known public figures, as well as animals of great personal and monetary...

Excerpt - SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 04, 2007 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX News Network) -- Computer security researchers said they have discovered a vulnerability in Adobe Systems Inc.'s ubiquitous Acrobat Reader software that allows cyber-intruders to attack personal computers through trusted Web links. Virtually any Web site hosting Portable Document Format, or PDF, files are vulnerable to attack, according to researchers from Symantec Corp. and VeriSign Inc.'s iDefense Intelligence. The attacks could range from stealing cookies that track a user's Web browsing history to the creation of harmful worms, the researchers said Wednesday. ~ snip ~

Acrobat and also Ethereal suffer vulnerability alerts. Adobe has patched two bugs in its ubiquitous Acrobat Reader application that could allow an attacker to take over a user's system via a malicious pdf file attached to an e-mail message. The bugs affect Windows, Mac OS X and Unix. Separately, developers warned of bugs in Ethereal, a popular network protocol analyser, that could allow an attacker to take over a system. Security research company iDefense warned of the bug affecting Windows and Mac in an advisory published on the Bugtraq mailing list late on Tuesday. The problem is a format string...
  • Question about creation of bookmarks and hyperlinks in PDF (vanity)

I have a Word document that I want to turn into a PDF. The document has Word headings ("Heading 1" etc) and hyperlinks. I also downloaded the 30 day trial of Acrobat Professional onto my computer, which is running Windows XP Home. I had hoped that Acrobat Professional was smart enough to recognize the headings and hyperlinks, and to create them within the PDF. But from the documentation I've seen, neither is created automatically. I had to create the PDF bookmarks manually, as well as the hierarchical structure. I don't mind doing it, but if the document had many headings,...
  • Automatic bookmark creation in Acrobat Professional (vanity)?

I just downloaded the 30 day free version of Acrobat Professional, because I want to create a PDF from a Word document. That document already has its own table of contents, which was built from headers that I inserted. I would like the PDF file to have its own table of contents (displayed via the two-pane window, in which I click on the table of contents entry and have the system take to the respective part of the PDF). However, when I read the documentation for Acrobat, it seems to say that the only to create PDF bookmarks is to...

Chinese acrobat Adily, a five time Guinness world record holder, plans to walk a tightrope across Niagara Falls, state press reported on Friday. The 32-year-old member of the Turkic-speaking Uighur minority said he would leave for Canada on September 13 to survey the site, the Xinhua news agency said. "After I see around the Niagara Falls, I will decide where to walk across. If nothing unexpected happens, I will walk across the Niagara Falls next May," said Adily. Toronto high wire walker Jay Cochrane has already succeeded in walking the falls but Adily said he would better the feat, although...

I despise Adobe software and the company. First the company and some of its officers were among the largest campaign contributors to Bill Clinton and the Democratic Party. The pdf format is among, if not the least efficient means of sharing and communicating information. Files are huge, slowing the internet and hogging servers. Once transmitted the files are in the least useful format for handling and analyzing data. And if storage is desired these files take up unnecessarily immense disc space. Governments always do the wrong things for the wrong reasons; it is not surprising that adobe has become a...
