Joint STARS aircraft undergoing work at a contractor facility may have been sabotaged. A tersely worded statement issued by Robins Air Force Base on Tuesday indicated that workers at Northrup Grumman’s Lake Charles, La., facility have discovered severed wires on an E-8C jet. “To ensure the integrity of the maintenance process, we are working with Northrop Grumman to get to the root cause,” the statement added. “The matter is currently under investigation and more details will be released as they become available.”

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Fire officials say one person is dead in a shooting at an entrance gate to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla. Tampa Fire Rescue officials say they were called to the gate at 6:47 p.m. on Wednesday.

TAMPA — An off-duty FBI agent shot and killed an Army veteran Wednesday night after a confrontation and chase at MacDill Air Force Base, officials said. It all started at the base's family camp, a recreational vehicle area at the south end of the base, said Col. Larry Martin, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. Tucson’s skies will be busier than usual this month and next with an influx of out-of-town military jets. Dozens of Air National Guard F-16 pilots are escaping the chill in their home states to train here in the program known as Operation Snowbird. Ten F-16s from New Jersey will arrive within the first two weeks of January. They’ll be followed mid-month by about a dozen F-16s from Vermont, and another dozen or so from Ohio at the end of the month and into the first week of February. To troops downed in combat, few sights are sweeter than the approach of military rescuers. In a few weeks, Tucson will be at the center of efforts to speed up that lifesaving process. The driver of a dark sport utility vehicle smashed into a gate outside Davis Monthan Air Force Base near South Swan Road Monday night, an official said. The SUV sustained front-end damage and the driver fled after ramming into the fence about 8:30 p.m. outside the entrance to the base at South Swan Road, said Tech Sgt. James Fisher, a base spokesman. Hundreds of Davis-Monthan personnel are off to war again with the base's A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft. About 300 airmen from the 354th Fighter Squadron and the 355th Maintenance Group are due to start leaving for Afghanistan this weekend. Some jet flights will run as late as midnight as personnel at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base test their war readiness. Two workers hired for construction jobs at Randolph AFB used counterfeit papers to get on base. "The two individuals that we have detained right now are Mexican nationals," said Jerry Robinette of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Two helicopters from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base were called Saturday to rescue an American who suffered what appeared to be a stroke about 500 miles off the California coast. The helicopters, from the 943rd Rescue Group, were chosen because the Navy and Coast Guard cannot refuel in the air, said Capt. Eric Simon, of the 943rd. While there is a rescue group stationed at Moffett Federal Airfield in the San Francisco area, Capt. Simon said the holiday made it difficult to activate that group.
